Not much reward for players on the fringes then is there. Romero is an able replacement who hasn't let us down.

This place is usually up in arms if an in form squad player gets dropped for the more established player
What reward does Romero need? If he wants to play he should look to move on, he knows he is second choice.

Crazy how some prioritise these weird etiquettes over picking the best team available.

It would be an insult to the FA Cup if we benched the best goalkeeper in the world for the final.

De Gea has to start against Chelsea.

I think it is everything about loyalty , so you're saying he was good enough to play in the previous rounds but not good enough for the Final, I dont agree.
I fully backed the decision to play Romero in the EL final. I'd like to see De Ge play the FA Cup final though. Not because I have any concerns with Romero's ability. More just the fact that we owe it to De Gea more. He puts up with a lot of poor results, none of which are his fault, never complains, and has stayed loyal to Utd when he could have easily chased more glory elsewhere. We can't make a habit of allowing him to miss out on cup finals, because absolutely nobody in our squad deserves to play in our biggest games, on the big stage, more than he does.

Are you seriously discussing which one of our goalkeepers should play against Chelsea? Only trophy we can win this year, and you all want to bench best in the world, and replace him with a guy who just came back from injury. Yes Romero was in EL final, because he was EL goalkeeper in almost all of the EL games, if not all. (don't have time to check) Even Jose said something like : "He played EL, he deserves to be in the final"

P.S. This is not FA Cup final thread....

    de Gea
    Valencia Smalling Jones Young
    Matic
    Herrera Pogba
    Lingard Rashford Sanchez
    ---
Romero; Lindelof, Shaw; Carrick, McTominay, Mata; Martial

Almost full strength for this game, assuming Lukaku & Fellaini are out who would make our strongest 18 otherwise. Probably the side that will face Chelsea in the FA Cup Final, with the squad players to start at the weekend. Assuming we get a positive result here, we can rest players at the weekend while Chelsea can't. I'm not sure what the deal with Bailly is as I think there's more to it. I think we all thought Bailly would be starting along Smalling at every opportunity in the more important games at this point, but it seems to be Smalling as first-choice with Lindelof and Jones fighting it out for the other place. Whoever starts tonight is probably an indicator of who will be selected for the Chelsea game.

Hope we just put this one to bed and get the 80 point mark nailed. I think we should've really finished above 85 points, but it won't matter in the end. Just get it done and dusted.

    West Ham 0-1 Man Utd

I don't see it as a reward - more keeping a very very good second choice keeper (probably the best in the league?) happy.

We don't really want Romero to leave, so giving him a few minutes in meaningless games is hardly a bad thing.

Hoping for Sanchez upfront tonight. He scored 24 PL goals last season playing as main striker plus he's very good at pressing from front. On the left he's easier stop. City would've used him upfront too.

We were referring to the FA Cup Final mate.

Edit: will save further discussion for the FA Cup thread.

Romero started all our FA matches bar the latest one due to his injury. He has travelled to London with the team for tonight match and there are still 10 days ahead of final so i reckon he's gonna be fine in time.

I think no one here wants De Gea to be benched in any final but what we're discussing is which choice Jose's gonna make. And based on history i think he will go with Romero.

You dont really think we cant get a single point to officially secure second position against a team that is already safe from relegation and managed by Moyes, who is winless against Jose, do you? PL is set to closed and not much left to discuss meanwhile FA final is our only important match so i think it's safe to loosen the rule a bit

Not that important anymore but a win against the hammers, something like a 2-3 win will taste good.

Team I suppose will be the strongest one available so that we get that point at-least to prove a point that we are improving and relax and field some youngsters in the last game of the season at home..

I think the team will be this:

    DDG
    Valencia Bailey Jones Young
    Herrera Matic Pogba
    Lingard Martial Sanchez

need to see either martial/sanchez up front, with the other playing LW. See absolutely no reason to start rashford with his recent form. Just because he is an english academy player doesn't mean he should get a pass for how shite he has been lately. Would love to see martial get another start up front, think he could do wonders there.

Looking at our opponents in previous rounds, yes he was good enough to play in those games. In the biggest games against better opposition, I wouldn't leave out the best GK in the world to appease our back-up.

Romero always did his job and never disappointed us be it in the big games or not. I'm fairly sure there will be no problem should Jose play him in another final again.

That's just not true though is it? Jose even said last year before UEL Final that he doesn't like "the complete separation of competitions" for his goalkeepers :

The Portuguese has used Romero for 10 of United’s 13 continental fixtures so far but also pointed to the fact that De Gea has also been used in the competition as evidence that the Argentine is not his “Europa League goalkeeper”.

The expectation would be that Romero starts in the final given his regular use before it, however, and the selection in such games comes at a pointed time given the increasing questions over whether De Gea will go to Real Madrid in the summer.

Mourinho had been asked at his post-game press conference whether that speculation had any influence on his decision, only for the United press officer to cut the question off. The Portuguese himself merely insisted that his decisions show he trusts all of his goalkeepers, and also described 20-year-old third-choice Joel Castro Pereira as “the best Portuguese goalkeeper of the next generation”.

“I don’t like to say this competition is for one goalkeeper, that competition is for another one,” Mourinho said. “Sergio played one match in the Premier League, David played two matches in the Europa League against Fenerbahce and against Feyenoord, Sergio played also one match in the League Cup, David played the other matches and played the final. I don’t like that complete separation.

In the pre-match presser for the cup final I can pretty much guarantee that Jose will say Romero will be starting. Would be great if he wasn't asked/didn't say anything as I'm confident Romero will start so would give me an extra point in lineup prediction game.

Basically a dead rubber game, but we had better not let fecking Moyes take a single point off us.

    Leaked team by MEN :

De Gea, Lindelof, Smalling, Jones, Valencia, Shaw, Pogba, Herrera, McTominay, Lingard, Sanchez

No excuses for Pogba in this one if that’s the team, he’s going to get the sort of ‘freedom’ that he apparently thrives on.

i mean i am sure he is licking his lips of looking forward and just seeing alexis and lingard to pass to.

How is having no pace in attack going to help him in anyway?

So which two players do you pick ahead of Lingard and Sanchez? Martial and Rashford? That went well last week.

Any more than two ahead of him then he doesn’t get the freedom to play that I assume he will get in this game, such freedom being the point I was trying to make.

I don't mind that line up. Mata in there instead of a 3rd CM would have been nice.. but Pogba will probably play further forward.

Two fast, hard working players that have a habit of getting into good positions? I’m sure he will be distraught.
really? Really. Two players who have a combined what 8 goals for united this season (even counting sanchez's goals for arsenal they maybe hit 20 combined) ? Where is the width coming from? Who will be in the attacking mid slots? Shaw and valencia better be camped the hell out in the wing spots or else west ham will be able to mark them easily. Is sanchez going to be dropping deep trying to get the ball? If so who is making the runs behind the defense? West hams defense is prob licking their lips seeing this lineup. Man some people are absolutely deluded about how important running is in the game. Swear talent and offensive ability means nothing to some as long as they run around as much as they can.

Just wish that Martial plays, the CAF becomes unbearable when he doesn't.

Sanchez Martial and Mata/Jesse would be good.

martial and sanchez is the easy call. Regardless of how people feel about the martial fc crap he has shown enough to at least get a chance playing with sanchez. Honestly this lineup would be ok subbing out lingard for martial. Would give more punch than lingard.
