"we're done" - Fergie

Fergie disagrees, Crewes' coach disagrees, Nick Powell disagrees. Who do you think I'm going to side with? Three professionals involved in the sport, or a random person on the internet?

I don't expect you to believe me. :) I do, however, expect you to take in all of the information available to you.

You're quoting this article, right?:

"We see him as a central midfield player," said the United boss.

"Crewe played him as a forward in behind the striker, but I asked a question of [Alex director of football] Dario Gradi as to whether he thought central midfield was his position.

"That's what he thinks, and Nick thinks that's his position too, so we're all in accord on that."

Note how he's saying that Crewe played him in an attacking role? He's just saying that the three of them are in agreement that central midfield could be where he truly flourishes. The wording is a bit iffy but it's much clearer in this article:

“We have the boy Powell coming through but he is young and, although he is a very good talent, he will eventually be a midfield player.

Given the quotes -- straight from SAF -- available, you can put it all together mate. When Rio was younger he played up top but now, in his 30s, it's known that he was a defensive masterclass in waiting. It's similar here, Powell's played an attacking midfield role for Crewe but the people who matter believe he could be a very good CM.

He will, however, require converting to the position as he's not a CM right now. Regardless of professional opinion, you can see it in his play. His defensive play is not as strong nor as instinctive as his attacking play. He can't tackle like he can shoot, nor can he intercept like he can pick out a pass. He'll learn these things.

Good work Avarice. Thought I was right about him at Crewe. So he is an attacking player who if we want to convert into a CM will require time and patience. He isn't a CM, pretty similar i'd say to Anderson when he first came to the club in fact.

Fair play Avarice, I didn't think it needed putting into perspective at first, but I stand corrected after seeing your post. And it was a good post at that. :)

Thanks mate.

Additionally, I don't understand Ekeke's point. For all I know, he could be correct but it doesn't add up. Crewe fans have always spoken about him as an attacking midfielder and his first season was all sub appearances. The majority of which were in the last 20 minutes, if that.

It's also important to note that Powell was given a bit more of a free role toward the end of last season and ended up playing behind the striker or as an inside forward as he chose. Not too dissimilar to how Rooney played in the season where we had Ronaldo and Tevez, in that he was free to roam and pick up space.

Cheers mate. It's nice to see someone on the Caf who isn't going to argue a silly little point; something I thought didn't happen on here anymore.

Something just caught my eye about one of those Fergie quotes above.

“We have the boy Powell coming through but he is young and, although he is a very good talent, he will eventually be a midfield player."

That is brilliant: it's like Fergie thinks that the really, really talented players should play in some other position, they are wasted in midfield :D

I think that's true though, look at Carrick! If he had that pass completion anywhere else on the field people would be drooling.
