"we're done" - Fergie

Found the video at Pakman's Blog. It's 100 MB (shouldn't take long on Mediafire) and the quote comes right at the end.

Cheers for the link to that vid Maajid! Thoroughly enjoyed it. SAF gave a really good insight into his monitoring of the RVP situation at Arsenal, and in his interest as events unfolded.

Great to hear such a positive vibe regarding Fletch too. Fergie is obviously not going overboard and points out that it is an ongoing situation that will require constant monitoring. But he seemed very positive on Fletch's chances of making a telling contribution. It certainly didn't seem like just wishful thinking on his part.

Let's hope it pans out that way! Can't wait for the season to start now, despite our seemingly annual defensive injury crisis!

We need the left back cover.

I'm not overly concerned with central midfield providing everyone can stay fit. Think next summer will be a decisive one regarding the midfield with Scholes likely to finally hang up the boots, the uncertainty regarding Fletch & this season being very much make-or-break for Anderson.

Sahin if Madrid make him available for sale rather than rent.

Was it not that we couldn't buy him but that they wanted a buy back clause at a certain amount. Which would be stupid unless we set it at 50m

I think the problem was that madrid planned to set the amount for the buy back clause themselves! SAF would never agree to that, if however Madrid decided to sell him unconditionally to us, then we could well see the deal done.

Top player imo, always rated him and would be perfect for us in either Scholes role, or Carrick's. We would pretty much solve all of our midfield concerns in one swoop!

Unfortunately Madrid want to have their cake and eat it as usual! :(

There are enough straws in the wind to make Dembele a decent bet for our last signing of the window.

Fergies's presence at Craven Cottage yesterday; Fulham's acknowledgement of a 'very low' bid from a premiership club for Dembele; Fergie's talk about 'one more player if he became available', consistent with United trying to lowball Fulham for Dembele, but unwilling to admit too much interest; the fact that he's the kind of player that everybody thinks we need.

All this 'circumstantial evidence' may amount to nothing, of course, but it's probably worth a punt.

Very true. Fergie could very well have been there to watch Fulham since their our next opponents, but that could easily be a cover-up to watch Dembele. By no means am I stating a fact, but you never know when it comes to Fergie.

Presently, I actually think our squad is good enough to go into the season as it is. It certainly lacks depth at left back, and it may lack that world-class quality in the centre midfield area - but who knows what Cleverley may be capable of if he gets a run of games. He has all the attributes needed to be Scholes' replacement*. We have enough bodies there to handle the season: Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Cleverley, Anderson, Fletcher (?), Powell, potentially Kagawa and then a few players in the U21's who I'd more than trust to have on our bench like Tunicliffe.

Dembele would be a fine acquisition to our squad - and I honestly do think he could be a fantastic partner for Carrick or Cleverley. I think he could grow into a machine here. But I do think we can handle the season with what we have.

Regarding left back - well clearly we'll just have to put faith in Evra not getting injured, and for him to at least find some kind of consistency to his game.

*I used that word lightly. Of course no one could replace Scholes, but you know what I mean.

I agree overall i wouldn't really get that signing either tbh. not disputing how good Dembele is or how good he may become, but where the feck would he fit into our team? What would be the point really? It's not really bringing anything new or covering an area we may not be as strong in.

Nah, not for me i would be astonished if SAF bought him, or even thinks we need him. A more defensively competent player to cover Carrick or at least help in that regard would surely be preferable to another attacking player.

Id love it if we signed him. He's a lot better defensively than people give him credit for. He works hard up and down the pitch, tracks back and outs in tackles. He seems to read the game well also as he is often well placed to intercept passes. He's only played there one season and he's bound to improve.

Fergie may well agree, but might like a bit of insurance at the right price.

Even though I can see where you are coming from, and I would love to see a Strootman type of player coming in, I think you aren't giving credit to Dembele's tackling side of the game. He definetly won't be able to replace Carrick, but I'd be perfectly happy going into a game with Cleverley-Dembele for example.

Indeed. He was second in the number of tackles made last season, behind Cabaye. I get the feeling some think he's a more of an attacking type of midfielder only, due to his past of playing in attack - but I've noticed he's intelligence when Fulham don't have possession of the ball. He can read the game well as you stated.

I don't expect us to sign anyone now, but I wouldn't be suprised if the player Fergie was talking about was Dembele.

I'm not gonna try to be a smartass here since admitedly I saw very little of Dembele, but I've heard from lots of people that he's a good "defender" as well.
Basicaly his attacking side is the one that gets more notice due to him being efficient on the ball, but a lot of people say he's very underrated in defense, he puts in a lot of tackles and has somewhat gotten the idea of positioning himself when he's not playing as an attacking midfielder.

There are others I'd rather have sign for us than him, but I'm pretty sure he could fit into our team, especialy since a back up for Carrick is essential.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that he could make one more signing before the transfer window closes.

Ferguson had indicated at the unveiling of Robin van Persie on Friday that the Dutchman's arrival from Arsenal was likely to be the last bit of business this summer.

However, Ferguson has revealed he is confident he would get the backing of the club's owners, the Glazers, if he wanted to make another foray in the transfer market.

"I think that is maybe it [in terms of signings this summer]," Ferguson told MUTV. "Maybe in one other position.

"We have spent a big amount of money and, if I need to go to the owners, I am sure they would say 'yes'. But it's only if a certain player would become available."

Ferguson revealed earlier this summer he could be in the market for a new left-back with United short of cover and he has been linked with a move for Everton's Leighton Baines.

A couple of hours after that interview, a reporter asked him if they were done and he said we were

The wording of it makes me think that it's new. It says that on Friday he "had" indicated RVP would be the last signing "but has now revealed". I also don't remember him mentioning anything about having the Glazers backing in the original interview.

It's not new, those quotes were floating about on Friday.

Pack it in lads it's over. Give those cocks some rest.

So another transfer window passes and we still haven't bought a CM...

Suppose we might try and convert Kagawa/Powell into one. So next summer we'll need to sign a replacement for Giggs and Scholes (in the squad, not direct replacements).

At least we bothered to get a LB in, even if he was the butt of everyones jokes for a few days... i'll get my coat.

How have people not got this yet? Powell IS one. Fergie and their old manager said so, he said so, so what's this convert bollocks?

Sorry to use the old fashioned positioning. But I always thought he was an AM from reading up about him at Crewe? I.E. Someone who plays much higher up on the pitch in the hole, similar to Kagawas position.

Despite him saying we're done, why do I get the feeling Fergie's fibbing his frogie off?

They said central midfield, not attacking midfield. If we want to go into pedantry mode then judging from last season he's a striker too.

He's been developed as a central midfielder and he made his debut and had his first season of appearances there. In his second season he was moved into the hole and scored a bucketload of goals

Powell is an advanced midfielder at best. Attacking midfielder is more accurate, though. He's also capable of playing the two slightly wider positions of a 4-3-3 if the 4-3-3 has two inside forwards as opposed to out-and-out wingers.

He's definitely not a CM in the United sense, as you can see from his defensive positioning and his general defensive work. He needs converting to play that role for us. While he could possibly be considered a CM in a system like Chelsea's -- where one of the CMs is welcome to roam and attack a bit more -- he lacks the ability to sit deep and protect when we don't have the ball in the way that we expect of our CMs in our 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation.

For what it's worth, I reckon he has the talent and the brains to make the conversion stick. It'll take some time though and he'll probably make some mistakes along the way so I hope people don't write him off. Working from the inside of our half will be a relatively new experience for him, he's usually the player who receives the ball from the deep-lying playmaker as opposed to being that deep-lying playmaker himself.
