Wayne Rooney - Manchester United Legend

Do you consider Rooney to be a United legend?

He said we treated him as a slave after he tried to force his transfer but SAF refused to sell him, which is normal.
Him saying we treated him like a slave is normal? I've never seen any other player say that.

Been a great player and incredible at his best. But never in same place like scholes or Riggs in terms of leaving a red tint on you.

Not a legend for me either. He's tainted, simple as that. He treated the club and fans poorly with his contract antics a few years back and quite rightly that is a negative that equalises the positives.

Proper legends, there aren't loads to be fair, are one offs who do not divide opinion. No way can a player be classified legendary if his fan base is split, that contradicts the entire definition of the word.

The holy trinity definitely, Cantona undoubtedly. Giggs, Nevile, Scholes are ingrained in United and coincide with a golden era from schoolboys to CL. Solsjkaer makes it in my opinion too, others have made greater contributions in way of appearances and longevity but something about him says legend. Robbo probably the only one from his era to make it, a warrior and would have died for United.

Keane ? Nope, not in my view. Split opinions on him.

If the top scorer of your club isn't a legend, then that word has no meaning.

We've also had so many class strikers and great players during his time at United which may have influenced how United fans judge him. Basically, we've had too many great players to choose as our heroes.

Nailed on legend. Forget the last two seasons - when Wayne was in his pomp he was unplayable at times. Good luck at Everton.

Anyone daring challenging Rooney's legendary status is often slapped at the face with his record. However, how important that record is? What hides below this so called prestigious record? What Rooney done for us?

The most popular red devils team across the channel is AC Milan. Their best ever top scorer is a certain Nils Gunnar Nordahl. He's hardly the biggest name associated to Milan isn't he? Anyway, similarly to Rooney his record is attributed to his longevity. He spent 7 years there. Unlike Rooney he wasn't part of AC Milan's best team ever. If he was, he would have probably scored more goals.

Some might say that longevity is a great thing as it shows commitment. This would apply to the likes of Giggs or Scholes but it doesn't really fit right with Rooney. The guy is in love with the area. He never played anywhere else outside Northern England and that might explain why he didn't move to China or the US were he could earn more money. However he's certainly not in love with us. His commitment to the club came at a high price. He threatened to leave twice and carved a good deal for himself. That would be fair enough if it was worth it. Not every player is loyal after all. However Rooney couldn't even bother taking good care of himself which is a big no no to football these days. At 31 players shouldn't end up in the state he is now and we all know that his decline had been quite constant for the past 2-3 years.

So how will Rooney be remembered? God only knows. The way I will remember him is that he was once one of the most talented players in the world and yet he failed to fully fulfill his taleNT. A man who never really wanted to leave the area he lived in but still made us pay premium for his services. At a time were players can go toe to toe with the best talent in the world at age 35, Rooney ended his career as a top player at age 29-30 and was never really ever our best player despite having ample talent to be that. I refuse to treat him at par to the likes of Scholes and Giggs who turned out

Yeah but you're an odd job, to be fair.

United without rooney... I am sad because of that. And because of people who argue is he a legend, i am angry and gutted.
Our first goalscorer in history, captain, player who always gave maximum, player who was ok with rotating positions, player who stayed when club was in result crisis and above all fantastic football player.
Yes he wasn't good last 2,3 years like he was in the rest of his career but as i said, he is our legend and things what some people say for him is disgraceful.

For me , the thing what is difference between clubs like city, psg and clubs like united, juve, barca are clubs legends. Clubs with such a huge tradition must have their legends in squad.
This transfer window has a bad taste now.

I'd say a fall out with Sir Alex is his one biggest obstacle in not being a legend. He's also never hidden the fact of being am Everton fan despite being captain at United.

Isnt Keane a legend? Or Best who fell out with SMB?? Very harsh, man.

A legend without doubt.

It's laughably hypocritical that people afford legendary status and continue to worship a player who actively sought to leave and did, Ronaldo.

Then it's, Rooney, the player that stayed is just a greedy blackmailing fat cnut and in no way a legend.

The mind boggles.

Don't want to do a Liverpool and live on 'past glories'.

Thanks Wayne, see ya, good luck and all that.

Moving swiftly onwards now. As my granny used to say 'if you are always looking back you'll fall down a big hole'

Keane was only ever great when he actually played. He's tainted his reputation since leaving. Bestie had his priorities right, women, alcohol, drugs and United. Couldn't help but love the guy.

Still remember how he battered us in Euro 2004. :)

Sad to see him go. He is an United legend, nobody can take that from him and on his day he was electric, a menace, deadly strike, full of energy and all out commitment.

What a player

Definite legend. In his prime he was simply unplayable, and he thoroughly deserves to go as United'd all time top scorer. I wouldn't let the last few seasons cloud my judgement of him.

Someone on Reddit has compiled his Twitter highlights as well:

Makes for great reading.

I think the heart has its own reasons to love, elevate and give someone a status above others. Not particularly for footballing reasons but I have always had players such as Paul McGrath, Evra, Ole, Rafael as my favourites.

Bestie would have been crucified in the current era, and you know it.

It's quite an online fan thing, the Rooney hate.

He regularly gets a great reaction at the stadium, everyone who I speak with in person likes him and is sorry to see him go (albeit accepting that it's the right thing to do). The whole 'arms-folded, Comic Book Guy attitude', seems to be exclusively online. Generally from people who seem to lack the ability to develop a connection with ANY player. Personally if you can watch someone go from a teenager to become the all time top scorer for your club (and country) and leave in his 30s and feel nothing then that's something that I can't relate to and frankly don't want to.

Rooney has been poor last couple of seasons, probably more. But it's just nuts to me that a fan can be so emotionally detached from it all. This "So? What have you done for me lately", so typical of the modern, shitty fan.

Obviously.

Although, I'd argue Bestie would have been a different person with all the help he'd receive from clubs these days. He'd have been on par with Messi, and Ronnie as a football player.

Whilst married to United, he never let go of his childhood sweetheart. ;)

Basically, United was his job. Once a blue, always a blue :wenger:

Players like Cantona, Ole, Rafael, Evra got the United bug, and are still fans.

Rooney has been on a rapid decline for over 4 years. Hardly blame fans who have forgotten have good he'd been prior to those forgetful last few years.
Politely disagree, Sults. If the topic is judging the entirety of his career, anyone whose focus, or experience, is based on the shaky past 4 years shouldn't really offer an opinion.

Based on the past 4 seasons under Moyes, LvG and Mou, what would the opinions be on Rio, Vidic, Giggs, RvP, Evra?

Why should Rooney bear the brunt of responsibility for the past four years, then? Because he was still playing I suppose.

Personally, as someone who remembers Rooney bursting into the scene at Everton, watching him play for Everton and thinking, "My word, that's the best English attacking talent I've seen since Gascoigne, SAF simply must sign him up." I remember the thrill when we signed him, his debut, and all the joy he brought. Sure, I remember the contract negotiations, the metatarsals, and the last 4 seasons (honestly, I thought he was one of the few who could hold his high after the Moyes debacle, really it was under LvG when he was halfway reinvented as a midfielder and phased out under Jose that he really fell off IMO). But if the topic of the thread is his whole tenure here, I don't think anyone who is only concerned with, or only knows, the past 4 seasons has very much of a perspective to offer an opinion.

Legend? Absolutely.

Some of this lot bear more grudges than high court judges.

Scholes is a lifelong Oldham fan, never hear a peep about him not being a legend.

Spot on. Especially when one of them, Christiano, might be in discussion as one of the greatest talents in a generation.

A fantastic player for us over these 13 years. A club and England captain who has broken records of goal scoring in this country. Wayne Rooney in my eyes will always be a legend. Never will forget the feeling I felt when he scored THAT goal against City. Thank you for everything Rooney!!!!!

I dont get the sugarcoating of the contract-situations from some of our posters. Yes, Rooney is by definition a legend for all he did for the club and should be remembered as such, but that does not mean that we have to love him, and only remember the good things.

He did exceptional stuff for the club, performed amazingly over a number of years, gave his all and produced some insane numbers. He should be remembered as one of the greats of Manchester United, but there is absolutely cause for supporters not to love him as much other United legends.

Legend status or fan favorite should not have to be one and the same.

There's nothing wrong with maintaining support for your club. I'm sure Eric and co still support Marseille or whoever. No doubt Wayne will always hold United in high regard.

Do you respect players like Carragher more ? A toffee , who is now a converted Liverpool fan?

You can still play professional football and give your all for a team without being a lifelong fan. This is the case with most footballers.

He is not my favorite United player, but I have to be crazy to not recognize what he has done for the club over the years and his overall body of work for the club definitely makes him a legend at the club.

Age and wear and tear catches up to all players and he has been playing since 16 at the top tier in England. His last few years should not reflect his overall contribution to our success. He filled in wherever he was asked to and scored some great and crucial goals for us. He has won everything at the club level for us and is out top goalscorer of all time.

Only times I was not happy with him was when he questioned SAF back in 2010 and again during SAF's last season. His last few years were more of a disappointment to see the shell of a beast that was Rooney than anger on his abilities.

Definitely a legend.

He was undoubtedly a great player during his peak years and contributed to United's success immensely. However, my heart has never accepted him as a legend. That's just me, and it's not particularly based on football or his achievements. As I mentioned above, I have loved players who have achieved a lot less for some apparent reason.

Just my thoughts.

Goodbye Captain, by Kaiizo films, one of the best football compilators in youtube

Sad to see you go Wayne.. yeah you was a bit of a cnut and caused a fair bit of controversy, however, you gave us the best of your years and brought many a footballing fan to their feet..

¨The good memories by far outweigh the bad.

Good luck captain fantastic, hope you you score a shed load more, just not against us!

When Ronaldo quit, i have not that sad since we still had the main work horse in Rooney. However since the 2010 fiasco, it was a bit bitter with him.

But what he has done for United is amazing. He has given us so many moments that stand out. So many brilliant goals and assists. His chip against Portsmouth, Goal against Milan at OT, his volley against Newcastle, his goal against City, all wonderful and so many to list.

All the best to him in the future.

Legend status or fan favorite should not have to be one and the same.
This is it! Well said.

Records and achievements are not a barometer for fans to give a player legend status.

Totally fair :) I loved Pallister, Nicky Butt, and Chicharito, too. But for me Rooney, Legend, absolutely. Sure I wish all the contract negotiations hadn't been so contentious, we'd view him in a different light I think.

Records and an ability to be liked are different. Respect for his achievements is a different matter.

"Leg." Brilliant.

He's a legend, of course he is, it's sad that things have been on the downswing for him here, for a while. The moments he provided, the force he was at his best, what he meant to this club in the prime years; I don't see how he can be anything but a legend in this history of this club.

I await his reception when Everton visit this coming season and hope he gets the reception he deserves.

Ronaldo said we treated him like a slave (as well as trying to leave twice before he did) and there are still some who act like he's the greatest thing in Manchester United's history so I don't think Rooney was all that bad in comparison.
I know, right? It's funny sometimes.

Split opinion? What split opinion? 84% - 16% at last check. :p

I know what you mean. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Don't expect players and managers to be loyal when the fans themselves lack loyalty and behave in such a ...... negative manner.

For me, I choose to celebrate the good memories he has shared with us at the club and wish him well.

PS: That bit in bold is perfect.

On further reflection, I don't even have an issue with his contract negotiations. Most of us would want the best for ourselves.
