He spent most of his United career under our greatest ever manager, Sir Alex, was playing during a time where we were winning almost everything, managed to play at a club which were was a stones throw from where he grew up and had the luxury of us being able to pay him the best wages.

What were his other options? Go abroad? I always felt Rooney wasn't the type who could settle abroad and he knew that, so that was never really an option. In the end its more a case of, we were the best option available to him rather than him staying because he loved United. He would have gone if the other options were better. Not a club legend for me.

You make it sound like any of us could go and become club top goalscorer in that squad. We get it, you dont fancy Rooney, and you and your brigade have to mention it in every post, including this one of course. I wonder which player of the club you love are you gonna moan about now... Jeez

I would rather celebrate his career with us than remember him as a liability. He was beyond great for over a decade, I'm sure posters would prefer to celebrate that rather than allow for the last 2-3 seasons to take over the memories.

Man, i grew up watching players like cantona, giggs, becks, scholes, keane, and then the generation of ronaldo and rooney came, whose peak was the '08 campaign.

Seeing Rooney leave feels truly special, and kinda sad obviously. Hes a hero for me, despite his rollercoaster form and dip of the last years, ill keep the good memories, which definitively outweights the downsides.

I had to come on to the forum today to say thanks for everything to Wayne. A couple of times during his thirteen years it looked like he was leaving, but, thankfully, the issues were ironed out and he remained totally professional, often sacrificing his preferred role for the good of the team. I don't hold any ill will towards him for the transfer sagas: he stayed and did his job. The time has flown by since the debut hat-trick in the Champions League, and it's always sad when a great player leaves the club, but he leaves with many great memories: the overhead kick against City, the volley against Newcastle, the half way line goal at West Ham, and so many others. He isn't just a great goal scorer but a scorer of great goals. His professionalism and ability were rewarded with a superb medal collection. As the highest scorer in the club's history, he's guaranteed an important place in the United story.

I wish Wayne all the best upon his return to his boyhood club and look forward to seeing him at Old Trafford next season. Once again he's a Blue, but he'll always be a Red. Legend.
 
He was fabulous for a decade. A critical fulcrum for our great team of last decade, a scorer of great goals, a scorer of important goals and at his best ferocious, impudent and tireless.

I'll miss him and I wish we had someone like a young Rooney now to replace him.

Him and ronaldo growing up, and teaming up to tear the league apart is one of my favorite memories ...
Euro 2004 finals and there after .. he was on track to be on the same level as messi, ronaldo .. but he stalled..

for me , I would take a prime rooney over messi ,ronaldo ..

One of our greatest legends. To think that he was absolutely phenomenal in a United shirt for ten years is astonishing in and of itself.

Becoming the club's leading scorer is a tremendous testament to his ability. He may have just crossed that line but that's because getting anywhere near that record is insanity.

Thanks for the wonderful memories Wayne. Good luck as you close out the final chapter of your career.

Been a United supporter for 50 years this year and I must admit I still squeal like a schoolgirl whenever we score a goal, some of Rooney's goals just made me sit there silently shaking my head in disbelief, was a force of nature in his younger days
 
United legend and one of the players who drew me to United when I began watching football. I'll always look on him fondly, regardless of the declining years.

Also, I'm glad to see him finishing up at his original club instead of China or MLS. Good for him and good on United for helping make it work.
 
He probably should've left a few years ago, but he was an incredible player. I will never forget a lot of his moments, especially all that hype that came with his transfer and then bagging a hat trick on his debut in the CL. Amazing.
 
A genuine big game player. Can think of so many iconic moments that can be attributed to him.
 
A club legend. He was integral to arguably the club's most successive period.

Feels a bit weird seeing him go. He's become synonymous with the club really.

I hope he can find some form again at Everton.

think that goal at home early on againsr Newcastle summer up his brilliance in a microcosm - angry, aggressive and giving the referee an earful before smashing an incredible goal in

Undisputed legend. More than that he will go down as one of the top 10 most influential players the club has ever had.

His off-field indiscretions are a minor blip, a grain of sand on the beach, a drop in the ocean, compared to the many years of success he contributed to and contributed to in a big way.

I'm glad he's leaving because he can't cut it anymore at this club but I am thankful for the good times he brought to my club and I won't act like some ungreatful little sheep bleating about one or two awkward moments, in a lifetime of service.

I had a horrible feeling when he almost signed for Chelsea In 2013, I couldn't bare to think of Rooney playing for them cnuts under that cnut Jose, he was too important to lose in my mind and I still thought of him as world class.. Little did I know of the steep decline that was to follow. In retrospect he should have left then and his legacy Has been tarnished somewhat for some but not me, he'll still be remembered as my Favorite United player during our most successful period. What a legacy. What a player. Bye Wayne thanks for everything
 
Hard to believe the day has finally come. It was obvious he'd be gone but somehow I still thought he'd hang around on the sidelines for another year but it was not to be. He'll be missed!

One of the greatest players this club has ever had.
Give it 5 years to a decade and he'll get the reverence he deserves.

It was good that we got him on the pitch in the Europa final. Only a few mins, but went out a winner.

What an absolute monster he was in his prime. Unplayable. Hope he scores some against City, Chelsea and Liverpool. Legend.

How do you figure? All he's added since then is a FA cup plus a league cup and a Europa league which he didnt feature much in. He had already given us 8 seasons at that point and would surely have gone down as a legend still. Is it because he flirted with City and then fecking off to Chelsea would have cemented him as a traitor who has no feelings for the club? Fergie had him half out the door anyway.

Got world record £80m for Ronnie though.... he got loads from us, we got plenty back.

I get why people rate Rooney .... goals. But I also get why the nearly transfers, sulks and last couple of years mean others don't rate him with 'legend' status - depends on what your driver for 'legend' is?
 
I know people look back on his past few years with sadness, resentment and even embarassment, but to me that underlines just how remarkable a player he was. That really won't sink in for a while yet, I think. If he has a few incredible moments for Everton then maybe it will. Given he's produced incredible moments in every single season of his career, it's not hard to imagine that being the trigger.

He broke the club's goal record by scoring a 90th minute, game-changing goal from a beautiful free kick from a ridiculous position. To have the balls to do that with all of that pressure, all of that resentment on his back...feck me. That's special. And then of course a couple of years earlier he scored a truly unforgettable goal, at a time when many fans were deeply unhappy with the team and him as a player.

Just those two moments alone are the makings of a folk hero. Yet for Rooney, it's a period many want to forget. That should serve as a reminder for how important, influential and spectacular he was at his peak.
