'Wayne Rooney is a sacrificial lamb and I hate it'

Rooney still has name brand recognition in parts of Asia. If the Chinese buy him he will pay them back in marketing potential, not for whatever the hell he does on the field these days.

I just think his brand is getting destroyed by his performances on the field. There is a large contingent of potential Chinese fans who watch the premier league and understand Rooney is done. Yeah, they still recognise the name, but won't want to watch him in their local teams. Rooney always depended on speed and strength for his game, and he lacks the ball control, and other skills that fans in China or America would want to pay to go watch in the football pitch.

But hey, I will be very happy if the Chinese do buy him, even as a free transfer.

I am suprised that people actually think this.

Rooney's decline has been there for all to see.

Does anyone remember the game at Villa Park last season? He was as bad anything he has shown recently.

That was the single worst performance I've ever seen from a forward player in the PL I think. Just beats Andy Carroll's cameo for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge because it was over 90 mins.

If you've ever conducted any business with Chinese you will realize they are not stupid. They take the long view, but never stupid. To the contrary, most of the time they end up with a substantial advantage in their business dealings. I don't see how the Chinese or anyone else would pay any kind of fee to United and pay Rooney's wages.
Well that makes it even worse. Only sensible option is to take the hit on any fee for him and just be happy we've freed up his wages.

Agreed, but he will be a bit part player wherever he goes, its just that in China he can be used to sell stuff plus make personal appearances.
Becks never really did anything that great when he went to LA Galaxy, but him going there did put that team on the map and the sold a lot of jerseys in the process.

that was historic. Cant decide if that or Watford away this season was the worst performance ive seen from a pro

Talkshite really wheeling out the BS this morning.

Claiming that his poor performances have been down to Jose playing him out of position and not giving him a consistent run up front

This actually triggers me reading that......how many more years do we have to hear this crap.

For the love of all things beautiful!

I bet I can find clips from Talksport saying Rooney should be played in midfield as well! :wenger:

I've had it with the cult of Rooney. I bet you that kiss a-s from Sky will ask about Rooney at the Europa league semi press conference too (as always!)

Why can't the Rooney worshippers let it go? He certainly has by the looks of him...

It obviously isn't politically expedient to say 'Wayne Rooney is finished at the top level' on TV or radio. However the fact that pundits can get away with denying reality to their audiences is pretty warped.

I think he tarnished his legacy with his performances. I can't think of a worse United captain, he shows zero leadership. Mourinho needs to get rid of him this summer

Wayne Rooney is the highest-ranked player:

Telegraph said:
12. Wayne Rooney: England’s record goal-scorer (53 goals), the most capped outfield player for his country (116 appearances) and destined to become the all-time top-scorer for his club Manchester United, Rooney is one of the biggest figures in the Premier League. Even though he is still just 30 – he turns 31 later this month – the captain of his club and country has been involved as a top-flight player for an astonishing 14 years and is the highest-paid at his club with a contract – with add-ons and commercial benefits – that touches £300,000-a-week.

What is as fascinating as Rooney’s achievements is the way in which he also polarises opinion. He is either should have the team built around him or is over the hill. He has been regarded as England’s ‘special player’, the one survivor of the Golden Generation. With 13.9m followers on Twitter, eight million on Instagram and 25.5m Facebook likes he also has one of the biggest social media profiles.

The commentators on NBCSN in America yesterday kept going on about how lucky Arsenal were that Rooney didn't score from one of his two almost identical shots on Cech from outside the box in the second half. "A player of his quality doesn't often miss two chances like that". It's astonishing.

No. A player of his quality does miss chances like that.

Indeed. The telling thing about that entry is that any current information is about his Instagram account or his salary, while anything about his football is records and things he's done in the past. They can't say a single good contemporary thing about him as a football player, which should set alarm bells blasting in their minds.

Inevitably it doesn't though, so we end up with Butch Wilkins' 'sacrificial lamb' spiel.

Depends on how long Martial hangs around if he doesn't get his shit together. He is another one whose "best position" is the one he isn't playing at the time.

‘I never wanted to be that player who just hung about and people couldn’t wait to get rid of or stopping the progress of a young player coming through,’ John Terry told Sky Sports.

This is exactly what Rooney has been doing for the last few years. He needs saving from himself.

Some nice PR from JT but I wonder if he'd hang around if he had a contract like Rooney's as opposed to the rolling 1 year deals he's received from Chelsea the past couple of years

Who gives two fecks if he gambled away a weeks wages though - that is a non-factor in this discussion.

But think of the children.

I have no idea about Wayne's gambling habits through the years (nor do I particularly care), but if this is something he's taken up recently it could (emphasis could) indicate he's having personal problems. Gambling can be a bit like alcohol in that sense. It's a means to escape everything else.

Blowing through that much money in such a short period of time could spell trouble for him when his career's over too, even if he's insanely loaded.

He get's a rough deal all things considered, an absolute bargain when you think what he has done for you, the goals he has scored, what you have won with him etc...

I understand why people are frustrated with him though. In terms of the fitness thing l think that was always going to be a problem, his body shape and what not. I can't exactly pinpoint why but l don't think he'd be the same player if he was as lean as Zlatan and Ronaldo.

l would question that story to be honest, anyone know what the highest stake is there? It's Manchester, not Las Vegas or Macau.

That was my first reaction too actually - him gambling 500k in a night is akin to me gambling a few hundred in a night (which nobody would bat an eyelid at). That is a non-story, not suprising. It is surprising that a small enough casino could cover the bet the bet though. I did some looking into it though and it seems a lot of smaller casinos in the UK link together and form partnerships to cover these larger bets and help each other out - so it could have been something like this.

If it is a one off then it isn't really a story. If it is a regular occurrence then it might be a problem. It could mean we are stuck with him on Soccer Saturday for years to come.

The difference with you (or me) is that your earning capacity doesn't collapse in your early thirties. If it's a one off, then probably no damage done but, if not, then blowing three weeks' wages (post tax) in one night is not too clever. The casino must love him....

That may be true but but still think he's looking at situation rationally. Where as Rooney still wants to be here next season.

Think JT has likely been left in no doubt that he will need to move to play football and understands that. The problem we have is too many ex-united players are quite happy to massage Wayne ego and tell him he is still of use to us. When truth be told both us and Wayne need to move on.

Save it with the financial advice

He is a Premier League and Manchester United legend. He could retire today and go into media, coaching or an ambassador role and still make more money than most could dream of.

Media? No, he's too thick to take on a lead role like Neville or Carragher.. Ambassador? Maybe (assuming these types of stories are rare events) but I don't see much corporate interest in him (he's not the clean cut, well educated Lampard type) and I doubt United pay their ambassadors like Robson too much. So none of those roles would allow him to spend 500k in one night unless it turns out he has some well-disguised abilities to become a Guardiola/Mourinho level super coach. And while he no doubt has plenty stashed away, were Colleen to get fed up with him and file for divorce (and there is plenty of rumour that all is not well), he would suddenly be a lot lighter in the pocket.

It sounds ridiculous, I know, but plenty of great boxers have ended up in financial trouble despite earning millions. Wayne will probably be ok but, had he been born 20 years earlier, he'd definitely end up back in Croxteth selling his rags to riches to rags story to the Sunday tabloids.
