I think he'll end up on the bench at Everton. He hasn't really looked after himself and his ability seems to be decreasing at an alarming rate. He was dead weight at United unfortunately.

The level of scorn and disdain for Rooney that I observe here at times is shocking to say the least. He is leaving for crying out loud. It's a time to remember all the good experiences and appreciate all he contributed to the club. Love or hate him, he's a United legend. The all time highest goalscorer in the club's history and despite all his flaws and mistakes, he's leaving in a dignified manner.
Exactly this. I understood the dislike when he was taking up space on the pitch but now that he is leaving lets just say thank you and farewell to a utd legend and one of the best players to have ever played in the PL

1 - he'll carry on his decline at Everton and they'll want him out after a year or two.
2 - he's been in a rut at United for the last few years and this move will prove the kick up the arse he needed. Being back at his boyhood club will remind him why he fell in love with football, he'll dedicate to his performances and fitness & Everton will have some player on their hands.

You have to blame rooney and stretford for that as much as the fans, his good memories and trophy winning performances have been balanced out by the sh*t he served us for major part of 4 seasons add to that his contract antics left a bad taste for many fans.
Or 3 - he'll play better for a while due to really wanting to do well for his boyhood club through sheer force of will, but age will catch up to him after a year or so.
I'm kinda looking forward to seeing how he does tbh.

This is as relevant to his transfer as any other post. And never declare anyone 'finished' at 31. There are enough examples in football and human history to remind us that no one is finished at that age - especially not someone with the talent of Wayne Rooney. I wouldn't bet against him giving Everton a few good seasons before he finally bows out.

I've wanted him gone for a while as I felt he was holding us back mostly but there is still a part of me that is sad to see him go. He has been here for over a decade and broken records. I wish him well (not too well if it's to our detriment) but I think we can now stop the 'hate' for him

It's a strange feeling seeing him go, but really I'm just not bothered. He's been a good player for us, but I never really liked him that much.
The reason they are saying this is because Rooney has hung around for 2-3 years too long.
He has played abysmally and in the final game he played (the Carrick testimonial), he was struggling against defenders who have long been retired.
Under Moyes and LVG, he was untouchable.
When Jose arrived, due to Jose's ruthless will to win (similar to SAF), he slowly began to remove Rooney from the team and has now succeeded.
It's the frustration which has built up for 2-3 years, that is causing people to write "feck off Wayne", etc.

To be fair, any team that hasn't won a title in four years is going to have a significant squad turnover, especially one that is widely considered to have won the last one with an aging squad.

1. leave for a fee and get a new contract elsewhere - not going to happen as you're spent
2. we'll let you leave for free and get the best possible contract as you're new club won't have to pay a penny for you as a gratitude from United

He was once my favorite United player, and even though I've given him deserved stick over the last 5 years I wish him a good end to his carrier and a nice time at Everton.

What's so overly emotinal about it?! When Scholes plays one of the charity games and scores a typical long ranger, aren't we supposed to feel happy/nostalgic/proud?! I do. Many others do. It's not overly emotional. It would be overly emotional if we sat there and cried tears of joy yeah but showing a bit of appreciation for the players you have grown up watching play is overly emotional now? Wanting Ex players to do well for other clubs when they have provided years of service to your club is overly emotional now? It's rather robotic on your part to not feel anything for the players that are a part of club's history. If you take pride in the silverware that are a part of United's history, if you enjoyed the glorious CL nights and amazing PL comebacks, you should be able to appreciate the players on an emotional level a little, even when they're gone from the club.
