Wan-Bissaka for sale | joins West Ham

I’m torn on this one. He is certainly a better RB than 17m but we’re in a tricky situation with his contract.

On the one hand he’s a decent enough squad option and provides a tactical option against the top sides with his unique ability to shutdown tricky wingers. On the other hand he’s so different to Dalot that he poses a tactical issue when he does play as he struggles playing out the back and doesn’t have the ability to beat a press and carry the ball.

I think the way we should look at it is, is he good enough and does he suit the style of play we aspire to produce in 2 years time?

Personally don’t think he is so I think if we can get £17m/€20m for him we should take it.

I’d then replace him with Sugawara at AZ in Eredivisie who’s great on the ball, has a fantastic delivery and his contract is out next summer and would be gettable for less than AWBs fee.

All this being said, we have bigger conundrums to sort out this summer but the worst thing we can do is let his contract run out and lose him for free in a year.

From 50 million to a rumored 17 million sale is a bit of a drop but he hasn't kicked on in the way we hoped, he still has no international caps and isn't our first choice right back five years later. Not been a terrible transfer but another somewhat disappointing one.

I supposed. But for a player like Wan bissaka, he's worth 30m easily. Hes not the best sure, but he can shut down that right wing and tackle the daylights out of any winger. There's not anyone like him. Still too cheap if going by the pricing of other players.

Ed Woodward is that you?

Not Galatasary’s fault we massively overpaid. We need to be ruthless about this. Get him off the books.

He is about to enter his sixth season at the club, hasn't really improved a great deal in that time and has become a back up. Wouldn't be bothered either way to be honest, but if he signs a new deal it should be for less than he is currently on.

I'm not sure that £17m is that bad for an uncapped player with a year left on his deal.

We need to be aware of having enough trained in nation players for registration purposes though.

How cheap and how experienced? Or to rephrase, make it make sense?

Eh?

I think as long as we buy a replacement for less than we sell AWB for. Would be good to see us maybe pick up a cheaper €20m type lesser known player we can develop.

For me that makes no sense, it only makes sense if you don't rate AWB at all, no features of his game at all. The type of player that fits your criteria is going to be a downgrade (a Malacia to type project?) and we lose a valuable weapon against tricky wingers. As said before it's probably full of caveats anyway. Disagree mate

Let him run down his contract, sign a new one on sensible rates, whatever.... 17m shouldn't even move our management, but what do I know?

17m would be a robbery by us. Take it and run. He has 1 year left and we can't make the same old mistakes of renewing to preserve value that just isn't there.

Yeah I don’t really. He’s excellent 1v1 but the rest of his game is so far below the level required that I don’t think him being great at one thing makes up for it.

Also, in a seasion how many games do you need a back up with the same profile as your first choice vs how many games do you need a specialist to lockdown a winger?

The former scenario far outweighs the latter

He can tackle but apart from that? Nothing to be proud of. He invites pressure by backing off all the time until he is in the lap of goalkeeper. Every time he gets ball into last third he just stops attacks and pass backwards. If we can sell him, I have no problem with that.

Shame because he started brightly but there is no upside from level he is on right now.

Not really when he's on a massive wage. He obviously had positives, but I don't think overall you'll be getting a downgrade, if you invest properly. He has his flaws that are fine for someone on a small wage and not purchased for 45m. I know he's a LB, but say someone like Kerkez - for what he will be purchased for and on as a wage, would that be a serious downgrade? I don't think so. There are RBs out there that would be more conducive to playing better football.

£17m I’m 100% ok with that instead of him staying and just leaving on a free next June.

Agree. He basically has a single utility where in one off games against top teams with an elite dribbler, he can do a job. Any other game state and he's just poor the majority of the time. It would be different if he was a true defensive specialist that was also good in the air/excellent tracking back etc. and just wasn't great going forward, but he's not.

We can’t give him a new contract, he’s exactly type of player we need to get rid of. We know he isnt good enough and he is an extremely limited player who can’t go majority of what you ideally want a RB to do.

It’s either sell him or let his contract run down, ideally I’d say sell, especially for 15m or more but it may not be feasible to replace him as well as strengthening other areas.

If we want to stop losing our players for paltry fees then we need to stop giving them ridiculous contracts. Nobody is giving us more than 20m with those wages.

Yeah, that's my take as well. We can't give him a new deal. I don't know if it is worth selling or just waiting until next summer to address getting in a new right back. We might end up buying two RCBs (my hope anyway) one of whom might be adept at playing right back as well. If we do, then selling him now should be done.

Yep. Other teams also manage without a specialised 1 v 1 defender.

We can't get a replacement for that much.

We'd obviously want a replacement for every player sold (for whom we actually need a replacement) to be better than those we have (not only tactically suitable) so they'll cost more. The prices for these players we want to sell is a leftover of how horribly the club has been run. Hard to complain about that now. Hence why it is a question whether to stick with him until his contract expires or see if we can get in an RCB who can cover/challenge Dalot.

Is there anyone other than Doku or Grealish you'd want him for?

Saint Maximin if he was still in the league but nobody else really. You can’t retain a player just because he might be useful once or twice a season.

Even looking at europe your talking about MBappe and Vinicius and they again play for the same team so his use case is pretty bloody tiny

His wages aren’t a stumbling block, he’s on 90k a week. To put that in context Lindelof is on 120k per week and Casemiro 250k per week. Its only the kids and Evans & McTominay who are on less at 60k

He's in the last year of his contract, so the options are 1 - accept 17M and sell, 2 - reject it and hold out for more, 3 - reject and keep him for 1 last season then he leaves on a free, or 4 - reject it and give him a new contract.
Option 4 is exactly the kind of crap we've been doing for years and why we're in the mess we're in. He's proven to not be good enough, let's not keep giving mediocre squad players nice, big, long term contacts eh.
We could hold out for more but it's obviously a risk, and not one worth taking for me. Might get an extra couple of mill but that's it.
So sell now or lose him for free next year? I'd sell now and use the money for a new, young, back up to Dalot, someone hopefully with a higher ceiling than AWB. I get the argument that selling him only to use the funds to directly replace him is pointless, but we're just gonna have to replace him next summer, and for a nett loss as we'll get zero money for him. Getting it done now hopefully costs the club nothing and sorts out the position long term.

If I was him I’d stay ant United for another year and then move on a free.

Same advice to Maguire, he has 1+1 year remaining. United have put themselves in a bad place after years of bad dealing, selling them or negotiating new contracts, they are going to get exploited either way.
