Vincent Kompany | Bayern Munich Manager

Some will simply never forgive him for not being "pragmatic" with Burnley, because allegedly he sabotaged them to "look good to Bayern", "skipping" the more accepted managerial path of paying your dues and winning consistently "against the odds" for years before being considered worthy of a club as big as Bayern.

He's leading the Bundesliga, through to the last 16 (after beating Celtic away from home) and he's not good enough. Ok.

Not when it matters, he hasn't. They have been shocking in the CL and haven't managed to win against any of the 'top' teams in the league bar Leipzig.
Tuchel was the opposite, he got them to perform in top games but they were horrible in between. And Nagelsmann was inconsistent but his peaks were far beyond anything Kompany has managed. He also didn't have a proper striker.

There's no doubt they've made steps down in the manager position with every dumb decision they made, from Flick to Nagelsmann to Tuchel to Kompany.

Agree to disagree :)

He’s always going to be disliked here for being a former City captain and Pep’s protege and that’s completely understandable. I don’t follow Bundesliga too much myself but from what I hear from people who do he’s doing a bit better than expected I guess

I don’t watch much football now but everytime I see Sané I wonder why he's not right up there as one of the world's best.

He came on last night and looked another level to everyone else.
Sane has the worst decision making I have ever seen from a player this talented. And considering his age and the managers he has worked with already, it’s fair to conclude this won’t change. All his skills and great physicality can’t make up for his lack of a final pass and good crossing and the lack of any reasonable shot selection and placement.
He tends to lose balls in dangerous areas, too. He desperately needs to go. Complete bust and his wages, like with Coman, Gnabry, Goretzka and Neuer, is the main reason we’re struggling so much.

To get more on topic, I still trust Kompany and think he’s delivering about what I have hoped before the season. We’re going into the right direction. We just need more changes on the squad. But I’m confident that we will get there. It’s mostly a lack of solid rotational players and quality from our forwards that is holding us back.

I think your CBs are subpar as well. It's actually amazing that you've spent so much on this position and still have to play Kim and Upamecano. Makes it even less understandable that you didn't just pay the asking price for Tah in the summer, he would have been your best value for money transfer only considering CBs since Hummels.

Sané, Coman and Gnabry are generally good enough as rotational options but their salaries are far too high for that and the latter two are sidelined too often. Good replacements would probably earn half of that but what you'd save this way would probably be covered by the fees you have to pay. Possibly, it would probably make sense to extent one or two of them for drastically reduced salaries. They might be open to it because I doubt any other club will be offering them more than half of what you're paying at the end of their contract.

I disagree about Upamecano. He’s fine. I’ve lost faith in Kim, however. He needs to go. I’m not sure Tah would help us all that much. I do however have high hopes in Ito. He has a far superior profile compared to Kim, too. If were a bit lucky, he’s good enough for us.

I disagree on the three being good enough as rotational options. Coman maybe. He makes few mistakes and has solid passing at least. That fits well into our style. But Gnabry and Sane need to leave asap. They are simply not good enough for us. Not just for the money they receive. Gnabry reminds me a lot of Rashford. Similar issues, in my opinion. He lacks drive and ambition and appears to be in bad shape. I’ve already talked about Sane. Sane is where promising attacks go to die.
I wouldn’t extend even one of them.

Beating Celtic only in the last minute is abysmal for Bayern.

Especially considering that this was in a playoff match. Having to play in that at all is already a failure for them.

On top they are already out of the cup again.

The Bundesliga run is great, but it's the only thing he has going for him.

I think hes the type that looks good when his team is superior in quality to the opposition (which happens nearly every week in the bundesliga)

But you put him up against a team with equal quality then his lack of tactical awareness really shines through.

This is a stage Real and City are in as well, the margins are small, but fair point on the bolded.

What would make Kompany a successful/proven manager at Bayern in your opinion, in addition to winning the Bundesliga?

Yeah he's a good guy and a good manager but not anywhere near the level a top club requires. It's also to be expected seeing he was their 6th choice.
It's hilarious how Bayern are trying to will it into being that he's up to the job, but the coin will drop soon enough. His Bayern are poor.
Your hate boner concerning Bayern and Kompany is, well, concerning.

I think it's hilarious how some fans of other clubs who clearly dont watch all the games try to laugh about Bayern fans because we are happy with Kompany so far.

I mean, it's not like our fan base is known for being very loyal to coaches, see Tuchel, Nagelsmann, Flick for latest examples.

It's just that Kompany is doing a (very) good (not perfect) job so far, no matter how many times and in how many threads you type your nonsense into.

It is still a failure for Bayern to even be playing these playoff games. They lost to Aston Villa and Feyenoord. That can't happen at Bayern.
What I currently criticise most about Kompany is his attacking game plan. It lacks ideas and creativity.

(Almost) Unbeaten CL group stage with 5-6 wins would be on par with previous managers.

Reliably winning games against top teams is necessary and would lead to the next point: winning the cup again (ideally repeatedly).

So far he isn't doing that. And they now even stopped convincingly beating the minnows. In this thread there is a post from November about a row of matches without conceding. 10 days ago they conceded 3 goals at home against Kiel, who are last in the league.

The trend is worrying.

Two weeks ago, Kompany had the best points average of any Bayern manager. And most of his runner ups had far better teams. He has them performing to a higher standard than more or less commonly agreed top coaches Nagelsmann and Tuchel.

Is that including the UCL? I would be surprised, given the poor campaign this time and how Bayern generally walked through the group stages before, that it would be higher including that.

Worrying for fans who are not Bayern fans. Every Bayern fan is more than happy with how he is fared this season and the way they are playing.

Its interesting to see what their reaction is if Bayern go out the next round, I would say, as long as they win the league (which they look like they will), the fans dont care how they fare in the CL.

It just seems that way from how they are speaking about him.

Of course we care about the CL. At least I do. I’m just realistic in my assessment of our squad. I know many people on here still seem to think we have this great squad with so many great attacking options and so on. The reality is, that our squad is basically the weakest it’s been since about 2009. And I still remember what it took to change that, how long it took to establish a new and better suited style and how dull some games were back then. We were incredibly close to failing in the group stage and it took a small wonder against Juve to progress. A year later, we made the final.
So before the season started, I had some expectations. Above everything else, I wanted the team to start playing more possession based football, put a higher focus on short passes and stabilise the defense.
If those things were clearly visible, I wouldn’t have had any problems with another trophyless season. As of right now, it looks very likely that we’re winning the league, it took incredibly bad luck for us to fail in the cup and we’re still in the CL. The style has changed significantly, despite many players not being suited to it. Personally, I think we’re below par right now and am pretty content with where things are going.
Next season, I have higher expectations. I expect the management to improve the squad further and to get rid of at least some out of Gnabry, Sane, Coman, Goretzka and Müller. And I expect for Kompany to improve us accordingly. Which means further progress within our new style, more stability and consistency overall and better attacking patterns and short passing. Which of course would translate to better performances in the CL.
If we don’t get there, change might be necessary once again. But so far, I’m happy.

Upamecano has all it takes expect for the mental resilience. People like to criticize Tah for being too error prone before Alonso came in but Upamecano was always on a wholly different level even while he was still at Leipzig. But yes, Ito was a promising transfer and could be a low risk high reward signing.

Regarding the wingers: I agree with your criticism but quality is very expensive these days. Malen just moved clubs for €25m, we paid €25m for Tella and Terrier, there are rumours Adeyemi could move for around €40m and none of them would be upgrades on Sané, Gnabry and Coman. If you want more complete attackers, you have to pay in excess of €50m. Otherwise you just trade one weakness for a different one. And in that case, an extension could be cheaper than signing a new player for a slightly lower salary. Especially since you now what you get: A player that might not be quite good enough for being a starter in top matches but more than enough against mid-table and weaker clubs. New players always come at the risk of failing totally, even those you deemed guaranteed successes.

Pretty sure it was only league matches. But realistically, it can't drag the average down all that much since even in this disappointing campaign they averaged almost 2 ppg.

I know Bayern fans moan about their squad as a whole but surely the starting 11 is good enough to compete in the CL? I mean you have Musiala, Kane, Kimmich, Sane, Ollise, Davies, Upamecano, Paulinha.... a few of them are big name signings too.

I get that Kompany has changed style of play but you want to be competing at the highest level too.

What areas of the squad do you think need to be addressed in the coming summer window then?

The squad is surely better than those of a lot of other clubs, probably around the level of Arsenal or Liverpool or something like that but Bayern has been used to a higher standard. They had Robben, Ribery, Müller, Thiago, Lewandowski, Boateng, Hummels, Lahm, Kroos, Alonso and Schweinsteiger who completely outlcass all of their successors bar maybe Musiala and Kane. Though I personally think that Kane isn't as good as prime Lewandowski and Musiala has yet to reach the level of Robben and Ribery.

In a way, that's down to bad recruiting but I also think Bayern fans took this squad strength for granted when it was always going to be difficult to maintian this standard after that generation faded. Robben and Ribery found their way to Bayern under very unusual circumstances for players of such a quality, Thiago and Alonso only joined them because of Guardiola while Müller, Lahm and Schweinsteiger as academy products in such a short window were like a lottery win etc. The stars aligned for them and they don't really do now.

Sane is not good enough to compete in the CL. I really suggest people watch him play more regularly. It is no coincidence basically every fan I know wants to get rid of him. Palhinha is a nice player and a good option to have, but doesn’t suit Kompany at all, it seems. It was a weird transfer that seems surplus as of right now.
We need to address attack more than anything else. Again, Sane, Coman and Gnabry are not up for it. They have all gotten much worse in the last few years. We desperately need more quality there and more importantly, we need players who are better passers and dribblers in tight spaces. We tried to sign Xavi Simons this summer period but unfortunately failed. He fits the profile we need very well. We should make a new attempt at him. Wirtz is another player who would fit perfectly.
It doesn’t have to be those two guys, even though that would be great. But players like that are what we need. Bernardo Silva is a somewhat similar type to them, to give you a better known reference.
We also need a back up striker. I’d prefer an older guy who would be happy to sit in the bench for a shot at some silverware. Nothing too expensive, as Kane will play most games. But even he needs rest.
That in itself would make a big difference, I believe and would speed up our attack, make our passing more fluid and they would add a new goal threat, which we are lacking other than Kane and Musiala and sometimes Olise (whom I really like).

Midfield is an issue for as long as Goretzka receives any meaningful playing time. He is far too bad in general by now, lacks tactical understanding and discipline and doesn’t fit our style at all. He’s the epitome of our current struggles. But we are already signing Bischof, who looks like an exciting talent and suits our style better. I have high hopes in him. If he is a success and we get rid of Goretzka, a midfield with Kimmich and Pavlovic as starters and Bischof and Palhinha as primary rotation options should be good enough.
In defense Kim is a bust. He makes too many stupid mistakes and negatively impacts our whole build up play and causes hesitance by our midfielders and attackers to push forward. But Ito, who was injured for the last half year, might provide a better option here. If that works out, I’d be happy with our centre backs. We’d just need to replace Kim with a reliable third option.
Another issue is right back. But getting Stanisic back could help here. He showed in Leverkusen how much he can contribute to our build up play.
So regarding the defense, we should spend the rest of the season assessing Ito and Stanisic. If they work out well, we’re mostly set.

Another issue is keeper. Neuer is way past it, prone to errors, much slower on the line and needs to go soon. We have bought a young talent named Urbig, who has some promise, but very little experience and has a long way to go. But he fits our style. It’s a bit of a long shot that he ends up as our starter. So we might need to address the position again in the future. For now, it looks certain that Neuer will still start next season and give a few games to Urbig.

Whilst I agree on the players you mentioned being top quality, recruitment is an issue with not just Bayern.

The level of players is not the same as it was a decade or so back, players get hyped very easily and have to do nothing, take Musiala for example... someone who is very highly rated, shown glimpses but is on route to a massive 400k a week wage?

So we kind of have to judge the players on what is around rather than the past.

its something majority of United fans are struggling with, always comparing to SAF days.

Bayern used to be able to bully teams in the Bundesliga to get their players, now a semi decent player worth 20m is quoted 50m, its not just impacting the big clubs from being top teams, its also shunning the growth of players.

I agree with you on most of the players you dont rate.. Sane seems to be living of hype that he has in his first 2 season at City and talent, something he has not improved on and now is wasted really. The other 2 wingers, I dont rate either.

The Paulinha signing didn't make sense as I didnt see the need for that kind of player, again causes unnecessary issues in the next windows to get rid of him and the transfer fee he used up.

I am interested to see how Kane gets on, a great goal scorer and brilliant on the ball but he just looks like off the ball he has no speed left in him.

I guess it will be a big summer for Bayern by the sounds of it to clear the squad and refresh.

Besides you (in my opinion) being a bit harsh on Goretzka, I agree with the rest.

I think there is much nostalgia in the notion that player standards have dropped. Musiala is a very good example of that. I agree that he's still a bit rough around the edges and especially his decision making and vision have much room for improvement but here are his Bundesliga stats in the last seasons:

24/25: 10 goals, 4 assists in 1384 minutes (98 minutes per scorer)
23/24: 10 goals, 6 assists in 1767 minutes (110 minutes per scorer)
22/23; 12 goals, 13 assists in 2211 minutes (88 minutes per scorer)

That's not far off Ribery and Robben in their primes. The issue is rather that the key transfers of their last generation aren't reproducable and their academy isn't producing a golden generation right now. Signing Robben and Ribery for €25m or so each were steals considering the players they turned out to be for them. How often can you sign a striker like Lewandowski as a free agent? Even Jerome Boateng who wasn't exactly a world beater at City turned out to be world class. Almost everything they touched turned to gold and the academy casually gifted them with a world class axis consisting of Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Müller and Alaba. I think many took that for granted and are frustrated now because it wasn't. Some even thought and incredible midfielder like Thiago was easily replaceable.

But yes, the globalisation of the transfer market also plays a role. The top prospects of the Bundesliga no longer see Bayern as the logical next destination and regularly choose to leave the league instead.

The Paulinha signing didn't make sense as I didnt see the need for that kind of player, again causes unnecessary issues in the next windows to get rid of him and the transfer fee he used up.
Tuchel wanted Palinha, but the club fecked the transfer up, so he only arrived a full season later. Which means the manager who wanted him was already gone.

If he wins the Bundesliga and gets far in the UCL (let's say semis or a final) then that would be pretty good for his first season. Winning only the league would ok but right now I don't think they can beat Liverpool or Barcelona.

Yep, winning Buli and semis in the CL are the natural goal for every Bayern coach. Though semis with the current squad is a stretch, so reaching the quarter finals should be acceptable.
