He desperately wanted Stones and when that failed he signed Djilobodji, Tomas Kalas, Abdul Baba, Wallace and Matt Miazga after failing to get Aymen Abdennour. Djilobodji was 26 and only played for Chelsea once, the others were all 21-22 and are all currently on loan. I think Mourinho is just obessed with defenders

Did he really want Stones that badly? He could've easily signed him here if he wanted him but we weren't linked at all. Kalas was already at the club, and I have a niggling feeling that Djilobodji wasn't 'his signing'.
I watched every game he made for Benfica. He's not ready to move and has recently made a few mistakes, see Besiktas 2nd and 3rd goal and Sporting's goal in the Derby. Comfortable with the ball but not so good in the air. I fear he will look an idiot in the more physical Premier League. Some say that it's the partnership with Luisão who is Rio Ferdinand finished and has forced him to play left-sided CB; he was outstanding with Jardel last year, playing as right-sided CB. He should stay another season and then move.
I would like him here simply because we need more defenders. Can't trust Jones, Smalling, Rojo to stay fit and he would be a cover at RB too. At 22 there's much potential and from what i read he was at Benfica B just over a year ago and has had a sensational turnaround so should be even more potential in him.
Interesting post. I saw that he was playing LCB this season, which was why I was on board with this transfer. But if he's not very comfortable there, then we'd be just buying yet another RCB and we have enough in our squad. If he is to brought in this season, he'd likely cover for Valencia as a RB, which would mean that we could sell Darmian.
I had read that Lindelof used to play CDM before breaking into the first team. Is he any good there? I'd imagine he can perform similarly to Dier there (based on the little I've seen of him).
So you're saying he wasn't overseeing signings? Kalas was signed in the summer of 2015 from Boro. I even forgot to mention the Brazilian Wallace who was signed in the same window and is also on loan, also 22
I've only seen few games so, can't say much anything meaningful about him, my preferred CB signing would have been Manolas.
I don't remember him ever playing as DM in the first team. He played there in the Benfica B on occasion. I wouldn't know if he's good enough at DM to play for United.
Although José is nowhere near the obsession level of LvG, he's also mentioned preferring a combination of a right footed and a left footed CB. We've already got Bailly, Smalling & Jones, none of those have a solid left foot as of now. We'll see what the future holds for Rojo, but I can imagine our next CB being a left footer, if that (good enough) player exists and is available. Then again, Mourinho's played plenty with two right footers as well. Just don't see any of our current ones two footed enough. Terry, Ramos & Materazzi were all really good with both feet.

Kalas has been at Chelsea since 2010. All of these random young players are more part and parcel of Chelsea's system of hoovering up young talents, sending them all on loan, and if they do well enough selling them on for profit or trying to retain them in the squad. Whether that was just Chelsea's system alone or Mourinho employing it is another story, but it doesn't look like it'll happen here.
I've never seen him, but I'm skeptic on account of him being Swedish and not Zlatan.
Ivanovic is probably a good comparison, Lindelöf is quicker though. He's only 22 but he's going to develop fast in the next couple of years. If you're wondering about his temperament, he recently captained Sweden.
Mourinho is definitely looking for a formidable backline. He likes having battling defenders and Lindelöf can definitely do that.
One thing worth nothing, he's played the whole 90 minutes for every game Benfica have played since October. With the injuries we've had in the past, this is certainly a welcomed sight.

For that amount of money I'd prefer if we make a move for Gimenez or someone of similar ilk.

I see him play every week and I don´t believe he is ready for Manchester United just yet.
He is very comfortable with the ball - a ball player CB - but he still is caught out of position a lot and makes the odd mistake.
He has a lot of potential but I believe United needs an player capable of hiting the ground running and I cant see Lindelof bei9ng that player.

I'm sure we will when them players become available.
But for now Lindelof is a good signing and has alot of potential.

Based on the vid I saw of him, not one of those eye-catchingly brilliant defenders based on first glance.. definitely one you'd need to watch more regularly to gauge his ability.

Perhaps we can buy him and then loan him back until the summer? That way we're not beaten to the signature of a promising defender whilst at the same time not hoarding CBs whilst Jones-Rojo are doing so well. We can evaluate our options come May.

Yeah but who will he come on for? Bailly is better than him (at least he didn't strike me as someone special from an odd Benfica game in CL and seems that fellow posters doesn't rate him that high), would mean that Smalling is done and Rojo/Jones lately have played well. We have 4 CB's at the moment he'll be our fifth.It's a bit of a pointless transfer. If it was for 10m pounds or thereabots I can understand, but 30m you would expect a finished article probably.

He's good but his form has been dropping the last month or so. I don't think he would be worth the money it would take to get him, 45 million euros and Benfica would be laughing their asses off. I don't see much sense in it either considering your CBs aren't old.

They're angry that they need to sell one of their best players yet again. They're angry that he seems to be leaving in January. They're scared of going back to their Jardel-Luisão partnership for the rest of the season, but with the money that's been talked about, most wouldn't mind selling him. Until I see Lindelöf in a United-shirt I refuse to Believe this rumour. He is not among the 20 best defenders in the world - he would be lucky to make the top 50. He is nowhere near the quality of Jones, Smalling and Bailly - even Rojo in his current form. So why spend £30 million for someone who isn't better than what we have ?

Thanks, good to hear that they seem to rate him at least. At 22 there's room for him to be better in the future but as always with players at this age, the best is for them to keep playing week in and week out so maybe a loan back until the end of the season would be ok for both clubs.

Gimenez please, throw the money at him instead. This one is far too uncertain for my liking. Seeing that most say he isnt ready yet, why go out and splurge this kind of money now on him? At least with Gimenez we have a world class CB in the making who played for years in Spain, Champions League and Uruguay alongside Godin and under Simeone.
Nothing wrong with getting more depth. We don't have proper cover for Valencia and he'll be 32 in some months. Darmian has to cover it at the moment and you won't find United fan who's happy with that. TFM is only 18 and despite being a huge prospect he's not ready. Who else is left..Young? So yes, we need a backup there.
As for CB position, we need more depth there too. What happens if Jones goes to glue factory again or Rojo gets injured/gets 3 match ban for another reckless start while Bailly is on ACON? If he isn't injured too. Smalling barely played this season due to injuries and he wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire for a while prior to that. No one wants to see Blind as a cover there.
Getting a 22 year old massive prospect as a backup and potential first choice in season or 2 is good investment in the future while also covering potential short term problems.
