Some people have already build a narrative and it didn't matter what he did today.

Look at his stats for the game

28 touches
0 aerial duels won
1 Interception
4 clearances
2 blocked shots

Amazingly passive for a team that was camped in their box the whole game. I barely noticed him last night. He certainly isn't a proactive defender. It is something I don't like to see, especially his constant retreating into our box.

He looked the same, maybe even less involved than he is with us. Granqvist took care of the bulk of the defending and Lindelof looked like his junior partner which of course he is
Yeah exactly. Granqvist was everywhere making interceptions and tackles. A neutral viewer wouldn't even notice Lindelof on the pitch. I had to keep looking around to see what he was doing.

I think he really benefits from having Granqvist alongside him, who always impresses me for Sweden.

Not as talented as any of the CB's United have had partner Lindelof at all, but he's a great leader and very experienced which probably helps settle some of the nerves.

Lindelof was decent but for a CB in a team under pressure, largely a non-entity. Granqvist was the real star yesterday and is the one who's always involved. Rock.

His aerial ability is an absolute joke tbh. Several times I noticed dangerous crosses from Germany into his area and he didn't even jump for the ball!

Old man Granqvist was miles better than him.

I don’t think he stood out either good or bad last night.

It’s still a mystery what he’s actually good at, his supposed ball playing ability and composure are above average at best and nothing to rave about. His lack of power and aerial ability I think are clear negatives. I don’t think he reads the game particularly well either.

He’s still relatively young but at 24 in two weeks you’d have thought there’d be a clear picture of his attributes. Awful buy if he cost £30m to be 4th or 5th CB and we’re still in the market for another.

I have to admit I'm not to sure about him - he was brought in for his passing but he's passing is not on the same level as Boateng or Alderweireld.

Boateng was absolute shite yesterday and has been going downhill for a while. Not sure what that says about Lindelhof

I really dislike he always puts his hands behind his back when defending a cross. It makes him less mobile and reduce his reaction time to stop the ball actually. Every blooming time he does it

some people on here....not sure why people are negative about him when he did everything that was asked of him last night. We didn't buy him to be a dominant CB, we bought him to be a cultured one. No one said he's the answer here cause no one on here knows what the bloody question is. It's not like we haven't got a good defensive record anyway......

He's beyond crap. I'm a Mourinho fan but if there is any evidence of him losing his touch it's watching this guy every week for Benfica and thinkng he's anything close to good enough for United. Mourinho knows it as well, the moment a big game comes around Lindelof is fecked off pronto.

What a terrible waste of money from Mourinho, a signing so bad it reduces his right to complain about future funds.

And I repeat, I'm a Mourinho fan.

What does this mean?

Totally agree. Really frustrating, he's such a sperm wannabe :P

I can't believe it hasn't been coached out of him. Must be so slow to twist and turn when he's like that.

We are looking for that one stand out performance that shows us why we bought him. That's why he has a 'pre-made agenda) because for one season he has been shaky with his only good performances being ones where he has not made mistakes.

Yesterday's game was similar for Sweden on the back foot - a game where he supposedly didn't make mistakes - even though he did just though Germany didn't capitalize on them. The amount of time Lindelof left his man free was too much in 90 mins especially in comparison to granqvist.

One pure stand out performance be that through defence or ball playing ability for us or Sweden would be good so we can have an idea of how to get the best out of him.

If we didn't need a balance between a dominant CB & a cultured one then I don't see why we are so eager to chuck Blind out. The guy is cultured as can be.

I understand those of you who’re sceptical. Yesterday’s game didn’t help his case.

Something happened with his confidence since he become a United player. This isn’t an excuse because part of playing for a top team is to have the right mentality but the Lindelöf we sew against Germany was trying to escape danger instead of taking command and being involved. Maybe this is his level? Anyway it’s frustrating.

To take the next step he needs to take command over his destiny. First thing is to approach the game without fear. Right now he’s a passenger. Another important thing is to play to his strengths. Demand the ball and be the main defensive distributor. Be vocal and show leadership. Maybe he misses a pass or two but that’s better then playing sideways or a safe five yard pass leading nowhere. Stop hiding when is getting tough. Stand up and breathe confidence. He also has to improve his aerial presence, right now he’s way to soft. It’s doesn’t work in the PL.

I’m a huge fan of Victor Lindelöf. Great guy and everything but to survive in a tough environment he needs to be more egotistic and take his chances. The brutal truth is that right now the ship is sailing without him. Step up Victor!

He played well yesterday. His team were camped back for 90 minutes and his job wasn't to carry the ball out or show much of his passing range, but he defended well and did what was asked of him.
Made plenty of important blocks which stopped goals. He's obviously not going to play on the front foot whilst all his team drop as deep as possible.

Nothing more needs to be said.

And it is the same in every player perfomance threads now during the world cup. Only used as an opportunity by the clueless posters to drive their negative agenda.

Complete and utter rubbish. One stand out performance....good job you aren't a scout if you are that easily pleased. Shall we do that thing that's becoming increasingly more difficult in football and have some patience? Not everything needs to be immediate and one thing Jose seems to get more right than wrong is know a good defender. The rest is the same old rubbish on here that someone needs to be the scapegoat, the focus of negativity when there's no logical reason other than pure bad mindedness. Go post something negative about Pogba as I'm sure you'll find lots of nodding dogs who will agree with you....

In fairness, it’s not complete rubbish. We as fans look for potential and a sign of what is possible for a player. Bailly makes mistakes but is fast, committed and aggressive so we look in the bright side as he is potentially very good. Similarly with Martial and Fosu-Mensah. Even Januzaj- we saw signs of what he could be and most people were keen to get behind him.

Lindelof though, has shown nothing exceptional. No great pace, positioning, strength, commitment, technique or anything reall

I've seen Lindelof for club and country for a year now and I'd still rather have Blind as a ball-passing CB. Blind is just better at distributing it.

The only thing Lindelof has on Blind is that he's a few years younger.

First stop using 'we' cause you don't speak for everyone. It's ridiculous as what you're suggesting is that your assessment of the player is better than utd scouts and manager....and this extends to the swedes manager too. The signing might not work out for lots of reasons are you're entitled to your opinion but sorry currently all you are doing is marking your own homework based on a lads first season. Anything other than that is pure stupidity.

By we I mean the majority of fans who have commented in this thread. Clearly not including you as you’ve made your opinion clear. I agree with you that the scouts should know what they are doing but not all signings work out (Depay, BFS, Schneiderlin to name just a few).

I would suggest that if the majority feel a player is struggling then they are probably struggling. I hope he manages to up his game next season as if he does Utd will profit. He’s just not shown anything to suggest it at this stage and there haven’t been many players signed for big money by Utd that have a poor first season then turn the corner the next.

Ps I’m not suggesting I know more than a football scout (that’s ludicrous) but equating it to another profession, it doesn’t take a doctor to know when someone is ill.

There is just something wrong/weird with him as a person. He is the only Swedish player that refuses to do interviews during World Cup and in a pre World Cup interview he kinda broke dow when asked a question about his family and asked for a pause. He seems really uncomfy in the spotlight to me.

So weird being focused on actually playing football and wanting to do his talking on the pitch.

He's a sensitive guy. Cancers are very emo

Not a team on the planet get all signings right and I'm not suggesting that this is one of them just it's his first season. He's improved game on game and coming to the end of the season had a number of solid performances. Have any defenders been anything than solid last season. Let's wait and see how things develop and 30m for a player in today's terms is about par....

He's as shit in the air as he was on day 1. Until I see progress in that area, I'll continue to have doubts.

At the very least, he's still young and can improve that aspect of the game.

Lindelöf has done a decent job for them during WC so far.

He was never great in the air for Benfica or Sweden NT, but he's still young and can improve that aspect of the game.

And Scholes might still improve his tackling.

Some people just don't have it in them. With Lindelof, I see a player with poor spatial awareness and zero development so far to suggest he'll overcome it.

Often, you can only conclude a terminal deficiency over a long period of time. But sometimes you can also conclude it when you watch a player who appears to be incapable of making progress. Being able to judge the flight of a ball is something that's more of a mental ability than an attribute that can be trained. A bit like having a propensity for languages or a good memory. By analogy, Lindelof can barely remember his ABCs.

I don't want to write him off just yet, mind you. But as I say, I've got serious doubts. My instinct (for what little it's worth) tells me there's something about him that's missing rather than just underdeveloped.

You know, thinking about it Lindelof might be the perfect defender for the VAR revolution. Doesn't make many tackles, or try to win the ball in the air, or really get too close to an attacker, if VAR de-fangs defenders as much as it is looking they best learn to read the game to an elite, Jedi level. Maybe that is his skill.

Lindelöf has been Sweden's best player in the two games he has played.

He was excellent. Granqvist and himself complement eachother very well.

No one watched him play against Mexico?

They're busy looking through his stats for the match to find something to "prove" that he was actually shit.

I thought he was really good. Composed and calmly dealt with everything that came his way. Sweden have a great defensive setup

Victor Lindelof’s game by numbers vs Mexico: 100% tackles won 11 defensive actions 7 clearances 2 aerial duels won 0 fouls committed

That is a great showing. Hope he kicks on next season as I still strongly feel that he can be a great CB for us.
