Van Gaal and Transfers

Quality not quantity mate. Some people don't rate Jonny Evans either. I do and I think he's a far better footballer than Smalling and he can slot in a s full back and do a creditable job there. This isn't about me finding a consensus and going against it as I am sometimes wont to do. I just don't think Smalling has shown he has what it takes to take over from one of the best centre halves the English game has produced in the last 30 years.

The quantity isn't enough already as it is. I rate Evans higher than Smalling and he just needs to stay fit to prove it but that doesn't mean I think Smalling should be sold. Ideally we'd buy an experienced and very good CB in addition to the players we have.

We're desperately short in defence. The players we have there are either injury prone or questionable in quality, or both.

In midfield, we have assemble a group of shockingly over paid and under talented players. Truly dreadful to watch.

I think we're about 5 or 6 players short in reality. Top players, too.

We are definitely not that short. Let me think. 1 CB, 1 LB cover, 1 RB cover, 1 starting CM/DM.

It is one reason I like Strootman when available and Blind, they cover CM and back, helping there.

So, yes! We are short, but only about 4 players shy ..... bit 5/6.

I also think he will be pulling for some Youth as well, which he should and he is probably a far better judge of talent than we are.

Would the performance against LA Galaxy lull him into a false sense of security and ability of our players. He obviously knows we are short at the back, I guess the injury to Carrick will still force his hand a bit for another CM hopefully, but maybe he looked at Fletcher and thought he could cover and if Cleverly plays okay he may think we're alright and Herrera is enough of an addition (We all know that not to be the case). But wide players and numbers 10s he has even commented how we are heavy in forwards, Ashley young obviously put in a good performance and Januzaj who can also play wide, Valencia being kept for RWB but can also play wide. Will he potentially therefore not strengthen in this area?

He's spoken about Strootman adding balance to the Dutch team and the implications of him being missing for the WC. I reckon he will have to go for a holding midfielder with Carrick being out for a while. I don't think he will leave it with just Jones and Fletcher being our options there.
