Valentino Livramento

I was crucified here when I said I would take him above AWB. He is brilliant. If there is any remote chance we can sign him, get him in asap.

We won't always play a back 3, but yeah if we do, that seems like an ideal solution. But Livramento already turned his back on whenever plans Chelsea were selling him. The club tried very hard to keep him but he wasn't interested in tussling with James in 2 years time when he could walk into a PL team right now. He won't be easy to convince to return home if James is still here doing bits.
Some suggests he is also insisted on buy back clause or his father in his deal. His family is full chelsea ST holders I think.

Interesting with the buyback, but how do that work if he is not keen himself? Guess it wont matter much then?

Did he turn his back or did he just want to take control of his situation and not allow Chelsea the power to decide where he is loaned too? I mean the buyout tells me that the door isn't completely closed as otherwise they probably would've done a sell on like the did with Guehi.

Well it's kind of the same thing. Chelsea wanted to keep him and send him on loan. He could see James was blossoming ahead of him, and correctly decided that, unfortunate as it may be for him, Chelsea already had a gem from the academy in his position who's not much older than him. Not much the club can do if they're producing two gems back to back in the same position. I can see him wanting and dreaming of playing for Chelsea again, but if United or City or a big club in Europe show interest, he's going to forget about those dreams and move on with his career.

We've never re-signed a young player who left to play games.

I'm sure we'd like to but there's more chance of us re-signing Salah.
Fair — I forgot he was sold. I meant more bringing loanees back and selling at the right time

Good question.
I have no idea how these clauses are worded and what they entail. For example, Chelsea might have the right to buy the player's registration rights at will, but can they force him to sign a contract? Surely not? Else his future potential contract would have already to be fixed and agreed on?

You would take him over most RB’s as his upside is so great. He’s 18 and an absolute gem. I’m convinced that he’s going England’s first choice RB.

Say Southampton wanted to sell him to someone other than Chelsea for £50m, would Chelsea be able to take £10m of that? If so does it effectively cap his value at £40m?

They have James already so can let him go.
Not for £25m they won't. Pretty sure they'll buy him back and then sell him on for £50m+ - and there'll be other shoppers in the market then.
If we stick to a back 3 there's scope for him to return as Tuchel sees James as a RCB aswell.

No expert, but doubt that would be legal.
Me neither. Yeah, only scenario how that would work is if with the buy back clause the player would have also agreed a potential returning contract, and why would he do that.

The buy back deal is merely between the clubs - if the club wanting to buy the player back can't agree with him, what happens? Could they have him ending up in some kind of limbo? Wouldn't be practical though..

No. If the buy back is £25 mil (as most reports have it) and Man United offered £30 mil, Southampton would get the full £30 mil.

If Chelsea offered £25, Southampton would have to accept that bid and hope that the player picked Man United otherwise they'd lose out on the extra £5 mil.

I don't get it. Isn't James an excellent crosser with the ability to score the odd goal as well? Always thought he looked ideal as a RWB.
Actually at youth level it was RCB where he elevated himself to star prospect. We moved him there to accommodate Lamptey and Sterling and he never looked back.

Also outside CB in a back three is far from a restrictive position under the right coaching, Azpi has made many decisive attacking contributions from that area.

It will give us a lot of flexibility going forward if we have the both.

What makes you think James is going to be okay with it? Genuine question.

James is bloody brilliant. Sadly, I think you will have let one of them go.

I was assuming it was £40m. But ok say it’s £25m - in your scenario why couldn’t Chelsea activate their buyback and then sell him straight to us for £5m profit?

Will be good for Chelsea but hope Livra goes for a club where he's a sureshot starter.

Maybe we can use your logic and play AWB as RCB.

That would be worth a shot if you had a promising candidate for RWB which you don't.

Or do you mean, after you've bought Livramento?

I use to think that but some of your fans actually told me he'd be a disaster there because of his positional sense.

Shaw/Telles I think would be a great outside CB/wingback duo.

Only time will tell.

Feck. That is so heartbreakingly unlucky. An ACL injury in your first pro season. Hope he comes back stronger than ever.

That's a shame. I think he's got similar qualities to Mazraoui so might have been a great fit.
