At least he's showing some balls.

Indeed, telling a Congress that has been rubbish in coming up with any meaningful bills to give him the bills to sign puts the ball firmly in their court.

Don't let them dropout? That's not gonna work

The challenge is keeping them from dropping out but not just graduating them to get them out of the way. There's no reason a kid should drop out of school, but most of them don't realize that until later. More should be put into technical schools or other areas of interest instead of idiots dropping out to sell drugs, play video games, or otherwise sit on their ass.

Fair enough, I'm worried about the effect wayward students would have on kids who want to learn.

That's an issue, but there should be options for non-academically minded students rather than dropping out. The difficult issue is what to do with them. They'll nearly always end up being a drain on society and the government if they just drop out.

Can you imagine Gingrich or Romney giving this speech, not really - Romney would be using his stump speech.

He's basically telling Congress to go sit in the corner, beautifully playing them against the American people.

Playing on the fact that they always have a worse approving rating that the sitting president.

Make it compulsory like it is here, parents here have gone to prison for not dealing with their kids who truant.

School is now compulsory here until you are 17. You can do alternatives like trade qualifications in the final 2 years but the only way of leaving otherwise is for a full time job which aren't exactly thick on the ground.

Indeed so.

CNN has all of the chit chat between the President and members of Congress as he walks out, very insightful.

God, Michelle looks stunning

I hate these addresses, where every sentence is punctuated by applause. I wish he'd deliver it from his desk.

I hate to quote something so trivial BUT.....you have got to be fecking kidding....she's ugly.

Anyway, onto serious stuff......pure class from Obama tonight. Pretty much agreed with every single point he made. Of course there were the occasional flag waving moments but that is to be expected.

He was very solid, it is no coincidence that whilst the Republicans are fighting over the fringes of their own rabble that Obama is positioning himself dead centre as he ought to.

Romney is such a twat. He was just on local TV discussing his tax situation. He was asked the question, should the rich pay more, and he came back with he doesn't know anyone that would willingly pay more tax.

We earn a hell of a lot less that Romney, and our tax rate is higher, and I would happily contribute another 5-10% if the country needed the money, and it was spent wisely.

Looks like a f-ing fish. Reminds me of Dory from Finding Nemo.

He clearly only knows a bunch of selfish, unpatriotic bastards then. People don't like taxes, but you can't live in the best country in the world(as they claim) and not pay for it. I don't go to a restaurant with 4 Michelin Stars and expect to order off the dollar menu. Freedom, stable society, infrastructure, and security have a cost. That is taxes. The whole aversion to paying for anyone else is astounding to me, considering many so-called Christians are so against helping others.

We, as Americans, are in this together. The wealthy will profit from a stronger middle class, but they would have to give up short-term profits and outrageous increases for that to happen. If they continue to soak up greater amounts of money while the rest of the country is sucked dry, they will ultimately lose it all. Some of them realize this. It benefits everyone for the middle class to be strong and growing. It might benefit the wealthy less than if they were able to take all the money, but they would have security and longevity. The United States of America has rarely been about only the wealthy and when it was, those were historically bad times, like the Gilded Age. Robber Barons lived in mansions while their workforce lived in squalor.

He pays a joke amount of taxes, but it's legal. That's the problem. A man making millions(or billions) pays less percentage-wise than average people. Then, he moans about having to pay more. Look, asshole, you pay roughly half of what most families do and most of it is made without doing work. Get over yourself.

I actually think Romney has blown it again. He's a decent frontrunner but tends to alienate people when he goes negative, much as he did when McCain was ahead of him during the 08 primaries. Mind you, it might work better against Newt, who also makes a shit frontrunner.

Tbf, Newt likes being a front runner, while also being an underdog, while also being in with a shot. He's so good at doing multiple different, juxtaposed things at once. Like when he was a Rockefeller Republican(video in 1988) and at the same time(video 2012) he was a Goldwater Republican. He's a man of many ideas...he just does them all at once.

We, as Americans, are in this together.

Clearly not enough people believe in this anymore. Being in 'this together' - implies collectivism, which implies socialism - and has been turned into a sin somehow.

I don't think I can recall a time, when the US was so divided(I suppose the Civil Rights era from our middle school books)

The problem with trying to tax people like Romney more is they have ways of getting around it. His earning are all investment related and he only pays tax on what he withdraws from his investments. If Obama makes the tax rate 30% all Romney need to do is roll his investment over until the Republicans are back in power. Raises taxes on the rich nearly always reduces the tax revenues.

Almost the first thing he says: fundamentally.

He really does overuse that word.

He's a psychopath I reckon

Actually about 1 in 100 men are psychopaths, so it wouldn't be surprising if they were over-represented in politics, a career that rewards ruthlessness.

Fortunately, he's the kind of psycho that has trouble holding it together.

Yes. More fundamental reform of tax is needed. Preferably, internationally coordinated.

Wings on pigs would be handy too, of course.

Its a very difficult problem to solve. The 15% tax rate on investments only applies to investments in American companies. If you hike the rate up to 30% it would be inline with foreign investments. I am sure they could probably get a better rate of return from some foreign investments so you run the risk of a major shift on investments from US companies.

Hmm... the top tax rate was 94% during the war, and still 70% under Reagan. My wild guess is that they collected more, not less revenue from higher earners than they do today.

If it makes you feel better, it took him 2 years, 6 months, 7 days, 4 hours, 32 minutes and 10 seconds to make what Liverpool paid for Andy Carroll.

Who would you like to see win the Republican nomination?

And not from a "who is least likely to win" perspective. I mean, which of them do you think would be the best president, if Obama has to lose?

(I could probably find this info out by reading up but Im going to be lazy.)

Romney I guess, by default. Gingrich is a bastard clown, Paul is genuinely mental, and Santorum doesn't even bear thinking about.

I suppose it is a bit obvious when you put it like that.

There is a reckless, morbidly fascinated part of me that would like Ron Paul to be president.

They say the President doesnt actually have that much power. Vote Paul and lets test the theory. A vote for Paul is a vote for change. Not that change is necessarily good, but it certainly wont be boring.
