they voted for Obama in 2008?

Yes some of them did. People have short memories and the economy is in a bad shape, which isn't his fault. With the right campaign the election is winnable for the Republicans.

Also kinda sounds like Mormon. If said int a weird way...

Coincidence?

The economy is the key. It is slowly improving though.

But Obama has not started campaigning yet.

Many will discount Florida but I think he has a fair chance to win it.

here is a link to how things stand currently

RealClearPolitics - 2012 Election Maps - Battle for White House

On top of the 229 Obama will win CO,PA and WI.That will bring him to 268. So he will just need 2 more electoral votes.

He has a far better CV than Obama did, as had every incoming president of the last fifty years.

George W. had a better c.v.?

Are you deaf, dumb or conservative?

A drunk, a crap business man, a cheat ?

I'm going straight to hell for this

Yeah but that means Europe is the key. He's basically relying for reelection on Merkel having vision and the ECB being sensible :nervous:

fair point. Merkel is sensible...not sure about ECB though...

Wrong way round. Merkel is far too cautious, and no more sensible or far-sighted or concerned about looking after her country's best interests than any of the other twats in office in Europe. You've fallen for her careful, softly spoken, I've-got-lots-of-gravitas shtick.

The ECB on the other hand, are fairly crafty fellows. The majority of the workarounds and jury-rigged solutions are theirs, in the face of obstruction from the politicians and their own internal German / Dutch faction. For example, recapitalising governments via their banks is a brilliant, if risky strategy, and implemented without lots of people realising till it was too late.

That's what I meant - he's relying to some extent on her being far-sighted, which doesn't bode well for him. She can't admit, politically, that the problems are caused more by imbalances than deficits, and that if Germany doesn't spend more it won't work.

Fair point. I enjoyed Krugman's volte-face on this... he spent weeks saying, "If they don't bail out the periphery the Euro's going to fail"... "Er, why aren't they bailing out the periphery, this is getting a bit tight"... "Holy feck, these guys are total idiots"... "We're all going to die!"... "Oh, right, i get it, they're doing it through the IMF."

The Super Pac formerly run by Stephen Colbert has been running ads in SC suggesting people vote for Herman Cain. He also has one that says Mitt Romney is a serial killer since corporations are people and Bain killed a number of corporations. Well, John Lithgow says Romney is a serial killer, not Colbert. Lithgow played a serial killer in Dexter so he would know.

Colbert and Stewart should run Lithgow's performance of that overtly dramatic Gingrich press release as an ad too.

Why does Newt dislike Romney so much?

Is it hatred of Romney's religious beliefs?

Jealousy the man is a better looking human and not fat?

Perhaps one of Newt's wives admitted she fantasized about him?

Newt has a very small penis and is lashing out?

Didnt Romney's pac run a lot of negative ads about Newt before the Iowa caucus?

Because in Newt's eyes, Romney's not a real cult of Reagan conservative. He's a flip flopping, political opportunist who will say anything to get elected. A lot of anti- Romney types in the GOP are absolutely convinced of this.

But that's politics - say whatever to get elected.

The self-righteousness of many politicians can be quite nauseating.

Especially leading up to elections. During the primaries a candidate moves more to the right or left to appease the base in order to get the nomination. The in the general election campaign they move more toward the center to sway the moderates and independents. There is no real standing on belief or principle, it's say what's needed to get the job.

Thats true for most politicians. What almost everyone suspects about Romney though is that he does not have any real core beliefs or agendas...except that he wants to become President. Now for a traditional republican, that will be very worrying because it would mean he would 'play ball' with a democratic congress.

The economy is the key. It is slowly improving though.

There is a downside to that. Many unemployed people were so disenchanted that they stopped looking for work, and fell off the jobless numbers. If the economy improves slightly hundreds of thousands of those people will suddenly start looking for work again. The net result will be rising jobless numbers.

I really don't think Obama will have much to campaign on when it comes to the economy.

 so annoying you can't watch Colbert or Stewart from the UK

There's surely something personal too. Newt's tacked with the political breeze himself plenty of times. He may be a right-winger but it's power he's really interested in. The journalists seem to think there's something personal between them, and that Romney is generally loathed by the other candidates.

I really don't think Obama will have much to campaign on when it comes to the economy.

If there's steady growth, even with pretty high unemployment, I think he will be able to argue that he inherited a shipwreck and steered it to port. The auto bailout already looks good, I think he will be able to make a case for the stimulus too. But there might not be growth...

Barack Obama had served one third of one term as a senator when he started running for president, George W. Bush on the otherhand was the Governor of Texas when he did so.

Had lunch with a college from my last company today. The guy is a swing voter, he went Dem last time but he is leaning heavily towards the Reps this time. The level of public borrowing and Obama care seem to be the main concerns for most people I speak to.

of course Florida will be tougher for the President. Even before campaigning nationally the President is ahead of Romney and specifically in Ohio.

He will have less electoral votes this time around, but will win.

Good thing Obama got started with a surplus then cut taxes(twice), started two wars, created the unfunded Medicare Part D program, and started the bailouts...oh wait.

People's interest in the debt and the blame put on Obama is astounding, but most people are uninformed. Most of the things that have been enacted with "Obamacare" people like. Yet for some reason everyone thinks its some socialist plot despite the GOP having input into it and its adopting various GOP ideas, like the individual mandate.

And they vote without having informed knowledge of anything that isn't broadcast on the awful news channels we have. :wenger:

As is the average Democratic voter. It's why advertising works, why candidates can get away with constant lies and exaggerations. Most ads and debates don't give much insight into actual policy or achievements of candidates. It's all insinuation, insult, and hyperbole.

I think the politicians of today are the most cynical lot. They have learnt from GWB that if you repeat things enough times, made-up data can become facts. WMD and Iraq comes to mind.

They also know that the general electorate is pretty ill informed or are just basically plain stupid with the exception of a minority.... a bit of patriotism goes a long way to cover the bald spots in the US.

The voters seem to have forgotten that the US and global economy was on the edge of an abyss only to be held back by BHO and a little GWB (though he had a part to play in putting us there to start with.)

It will normally take 6-8 years of major restructuring to fix those problems that have been built up over decades of inefficiencies. But BHO cant say that simply because the GOP will turn it and use that against him.

don't fully agree.the average democratic voter does not vote against his own interest.

the average Republican voter is highly disinformed or misinformed.

The average voter is not that well informed, and if one parties has a higher percentage of the ill informed it is probably the Dems TBH.

The real problem is trying to analyze economic data against political cycles. Most policies take years to have an impact, either negative or positive. Obama shouldn't really be judge on the economy or deficit until 2010 onwards. That being said we are running huge deficits now, and that is forecast to continue for years. Returning a President more likely to increase public spending should be a concern for every voter. Not saying its a big enough concern to not get him reelected but its a concern nonetheless.

we must agree to disagree on which party has more disinformed voters...I mean really just look at the dumb tea party crowd.

you spend through a recession...not reduce defecits. Jobs jobs jobs....

cut wasteful spending sure. bring back the troops, reduce bases.

raise taxes on the wealthy. simply not renew the Bush tax cuts.

finally we should control and bring down the ridiculous health insurance costs.
