Colorado: Obama 50%, Romney 47% (Public Policy Polling)

Florida: Obama 47%, Romney 44% (Newsmax/Zogby)

Michigan: Obama 44%, Romney 41% (Denno Research)

North Carolina: Romney 52%, Obama 46% (Rasmussen)

Ohio: Obama 49%, Romney 48% (Rasmussen)

Virginia: Obama 49%, Romney 48% (Public Policy Polling)

The first and last polls look Kosha. Not too bothered about the rest.

I'm going to watch the baseball game now but this goes here.

"Europeans think Americans are fat, vulgar, greedy, stupid, ambitious and ignorant and so on," Hitchens said of the filmmaker. "And they've taken as their own, as their representative American, someone who actually embodies all of those qualities."

You judge people by the merits of their arguments, Michael Moore is not as intellectual as Christopher Hitchens but he was far closer to the truth of the Iraq war than anything I've heard come from Hitchen's mouth.

Who actually cares what Hitchens thinks of Moore's looks or personality, btw?

This is just too dumb. Regardless of what you think of Hitchens, he was an intellectual like no other.
Why the anger, Saliph?

Of course I didn't mean to imply he was a 'fecking loser'. I really, really appreciated him as a journalist, but I just don't think he did enough academically to count him as an intellectual. Silly, throwaway comment from me, anyway. Sorry.
And sorry for bringing the thread off topic.

As we saw during Tuesday’s presidential debate, Mitt Romney’s answer to concerns over the “47 percent” video is to insist on his concern for “100 percent” of Americans. The problem is that this concern only seems to manifest itself when he’s in public. Behind closed doors, or when talking to like-minded people, he’s more willing to express his contempt for their situation — “I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives” — or their autonomy.

The latest: In These Times has discovered audio of a call from Romney to the conservative National Federation of Independent Business, where he tells a group of business owners that they should “make it very clear” how they feel about the candidates to their employees, and alert them to how their jobs might be affected by who wins in November. Here’s the transcript:

I hope you make it very clear to your employees what you believe is in the best interest of your enterprise and therefore their job and their future in the upcoming elections. And whether you agree with me or you agree with President Obama, or whatever your political view, I hope — I hope you pass those along to your employees.
He goes on to reassure the business owners that there’s nothing “illegal” about doing this:

Nothing illegal about you talking to your employees about what you believe is best for the business, because I think that will figure into their election decision, their voting decision and of course doing that with your family and your kids as well.
It’s true that Romney is not partisan with his recommendation — he also tells empoyers who support Obama to talk to their employees about that. But this is still disturbing because of what it says about Romney’s view of the relationship between employeers and workers. Implicit in the request for business owners to “make it very clear” to their employees what is “in the best interests of your enterprise and thereofre their job” is coercion. When a friend says, “think about who you vote for,” it’s a piece of advice. When your boss says “think about who you vote for,” it carries the weight of a threat — after all, your boss can fire you.

Romney complains that he’s been caricatured as a heartless plutocrat, but he seems intent on proving it. In fundraisers, he expresses his disdain for the less fortunate. On the trail, he pushes policies that would shift an ever greater share of national income to the wealthiest Americans. And when speaking to like-minded business owners, he shows his contempt for the autonomy of ordinary workers. Mitt Romney is exactly who we think he is, and if he’s elected president, those are the values we should expect.

Mitt knows.

Good polls for Obama today.

Yeah, but still hard to reconcile this:

Romney +7 on gallup

with this:

NBC/WSJ/Marist Polls

IA Obama 51 Romney 43 Up 8
WI Obama 51 Romney 45 Up 6

excellent numbers.

Obviously it's likely that some (or all) are outliers and the best way is to follow the averages, but it's still bizarre seeing as they're from the more respected pollsters.

Apologies in advance to Grinner.

"Of course world affairs are a challenge for every candidate. Some of you guys remember after my foreign trip in 2008 I was attacked as a "celebrity" because I was so popular with our allies overseas. I have to say I'm impressed with how well Governor Romney has avoided that problem."

Obama's opener: "Thank you! Thank you! Everybody please take your seats...or else Clint Eastwood will yell at them."

 Was just about to post that one.

NBC is the best pollster imo. I was delighted to see the WI numbers. I suspected the IA numbers would be very good.

If the VA and FL are positive for Obama, he will be back.

The Gallup tracking poll does not reconcile with the Job Approval poll for Obama which is very good.

The only explanation is Romney is well into the 20s in lead in Red States.

Obama already has IA. A third of early voters have already voted and he is leading 2 to 1.

Same rate for early voters in WI but only 6% have voted. Still he looks comfortable there. With CO coming back for the president, his Western firewall (NV/CO/NM) is secure...in case he loses Ohio..which looks unlikely.

err sorry Grin :)

The NBC/WSJ polls of Iowa and Wisconsin also polled people who had already voted.

Iowa: 67-32 Obama
Wisconsin: 64-35 Obama

Most notably, 34% of people who described themselves as "likely voters" in Iowa had already voted.

PPP has an Iowa one out tomorrow though which quite possibly has a Romney lead (at the very least a nearly tied race), and they typically lean Dem. Polls have been a bit screwy ever since that first debate.

Romney's jokes were good, though he had that weird Romney-face between the jokes that made him look like he had indigestion.

Were they THIS good?

Random on Twitter said:
I think Romney won the election tonight with that brutal bit of humor. Who knew he could deliver comedy like that?? #AlSmithDinner

Ann did warn us, in fairness. She was about as convincing as a Liverpool fan talking about Uruguayan culture, but still.

There's clearly a tremendous left wing (relative to US politics) bias on the forum. There are some centrists or moderates on here but they usually get labeled as Repubs/conservatives/neo-cons due to the over whelming number of left leaning folks.

It's ok though, just pop in a read for the comedic factor. Sometimes they get this group think going and it's page after page of comedy. See all the pages directly after the VP debate. So many were confounded to think how anyone could have seen that anything other than a crushing Biden win. It was pretty genius. Then of course followed up by the 'stupid American' comments. Excellent stuff.

That's to be expected when the site is visited mostly by Brits and Euros. We've had a few American conservatives on the CAF over the years and many of them have been for their political views (usually cloaked as something they said or did on the forum).

At this point, Romney's path to 270 will require him moving the national polls another 3-5 percent in his favor. That would probably be enough to dislodge Obama's lead in Ohio - and if Romney picks up Ohio, chances are he will pick up Virginia, Florida, and Colorado as well. The remaining 16 days of the campaign will probably boil down to both sides firing up the base to make sure they actually turn out on election day.

FresnoBob was superb. It was really nice having a well measured voice on the other side. I'd love to know if he's able to stomach this latest breed the right trotted out.

Come back Bob.
