US Politics

They're now saying around 200 members of congress were on the train. Where the heck was the security?

Gowdy must have felt something coming down. It's super odd how he went from being a massive Trump supporter to suddenly backing off and now this announcement. Interesting stuff.

I agree. Its probably a combination of knowing a Dem wave is imminent this November and having some degree of inside knowledge of what Trump has actually done and what Mueller may drop on him later this year. At the end of the day, its easier for a politician to simply "retire" than be left the lingering disappointment of having been voted out of office.

@Fergie's gum

Interesting dynamic in this race!

Emily's list backing anti-choice candidates was one of the many things exposed by this very long article. (Author was interviewed here, starts around 9 mins. I found the parts about the House Finance Committee specifically taking in new members and the Rolodex test to be the most insidious ways of making sure the party cannot move left economically)

I know we should be enjoying all the Republicans stepping down but is it not something seriously fishy going on?

You just know they're trying to pull something off right?

The simplest explanation is that they are scared about re-election, and their next career as consultants/lobbyists will be better than fighting a tough election and going back for the same in 2020. Chairs of committees will command a higher price in that lobbyist market because of their influence.
So far, it seems like a convincing explanation.

The overall number of retirements is abnormally high for the GOP, but the number that are bailing out of competitive districts is exactly on pace with the equivalent number from 2008 (though that was also the highest rate of any of the elections from 2006 till now).

You can always count on the NYT data team to be tracking such things - https://www.nytimes.com/interactive...ents-tracker.html?smid=tw-upshotnyt&smtyp=cur

2008 was a wave election with an unpopular president, a financial crisis, Obama at his peak, and the memory of both Katrina and Iraq still fresh. If that is the comparison to be made, it is an encouraging sign.

What was wrong with the video ? Kennedy has took money from stupid places, it worth mentioned.

I thought we would get something a bit more substantive than a quivering rant from a youtube personality. I get that Kennedy is shaky on various issues, but this idea that he should be disqualified because of his name or his family has money is pretty myopic. He's getting far too much attention when he has no chance of being the nominee. The likes of Biden and Oprah should be getting far more attention at this point.

Well yeah I agree that he's getting too much coverage but that's the fault of the Dems for giving him the reply to the state of the union. And the video is just pointing out both the money and dullness that is with Kennedy.

Oh and I really wish being part of some ''political'' family would disqualify people from office.

Unfortunately we can't choose which family we are born into, so I don't think its a good idea to knock someone based on that. Engaging them on their policy ideas is however fair play.

Oh come on now. Seriously? Surely you guys have had enough of celebrity Presidents?

She's awful and should never be considered. Her ridiculous and highly dangerous anti vaccination stance should be enough to disqualify her.

She's not running, but she would be taken very seriously if she did.

I happen to like my politicians to have some degree of experience in governance, but the average person obviously looks at things a bit differently.

I think It's sad she would be taken seriously. I completely agree that someone in the running for a top political position, especially President, should have some experience especially in foreign affairs matters. Trump has proved that experience is imperative, although it's really sad his supporters competely disagree.

When you click on a video titled Joe Kennedy you kinda expect to see him not some pointless vlogger mouthing off .

I make my own opinions i dont need someone i dont know telling me what to think

Don't know about you guys but I'd love to see a George Clooney/The Rock ticket if we go celebrity again :D

Why would the Rock run below George Clooney ? Out of the two of them im sure The Rock has some sense of normal peoples lives and problems

Only because Clooney seems to have been prepping himself for and been involved in the business for politics for quite a while now. Either way we d have a one two punch of sexy and muscle in negotiations. The Batman and the Rock teaming up. Make America Smell the Rock's Cooking (Again)

The Rock is a Republican although now he claims to be an independent, Clooney is a Democrat. Can't see them teaming up anytime soon.

Didn't think anyone would take me serious on this but fine we ll play. In all seriousness it seems inevitable Clooney at least will take a prominent role in politics in the foreseeable future.

I knew you weren't being serious but at the same time as you say Clooney has said he wants to run for Congress and The Rock has also been linked with a role somewhere in politics and has also been linked with running for President too. Although he denied it he didn't completely rile it out.

I just hope that people would have learned their lesson with Trump.
