US Politics

What were some of the highlights of that documentary for you?

The one that I had not heard of before was how Truman was nominated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1944_Democratic_Party_vice_presidential_candidate_selection

If Wallace had been nominated as he rightly should have been, the country would have taken a far better course.
Wallace was very much like FDR and would have continued his policies aimed at benefiting people.

The Prologue and the influence, I would say the control of the government by the robber barons has had disastrous effects not just in this country but all over the world.

The fact is not much has changed now.

The discussions on the various political threads here usually breaks down between leftists or progressives and centrists and others.

But all those of us on the left are saying is lets do the right thing.
For me personally I want to be treated fairly and I want others to be treated the same.
I have nothing against those who have wealth.
But if they are employers, pay employees a living wage. And pay your fair share of taxes.

Finally, if we see injustice, then we have to fight it.

Its not about 'my side must win' in an election. That type of tribal mentality is fine for a football match.

More evidence for why the "we just have to wait until the old conservatives die out to have a majority for progressive change" myth that I have been hearing since 1992 is still wrong:

Turns Out White Millennials Are Just As Conservative As Their Parents
Democrats hoping for younger voters to reduce the country’s political and racial divide could be disappointed.

"I was an artillery officer, and we fired hundreds of rounds into Fallujah, killed probably hundreds of civilians, if not scores, if not hundreds of civilians," Hunter said. "Probably killed women and children, if there were any left in the city when we invaded. So do I get judged, too?"

Yes?

Gallagher's alleged victim "might have been killed in a way that you don't personally agree with, because you say it's against the laws of war,"

This guy is dumber than a bag of rocks.

Yeah, one of the main reasons I hate this mystification of “The Lobby” is that it functions as a way of letting Innocent America off the hook for its bad decisions and destructive policies by projecting blame on to the nefarious scheming of a relatively much less powerful regional actor and its supporters. America has behaved similarly or worse all over the world, but the closest equivalence I can think of in, say, SE Asia would be the blame Kissinger gets as an individual seen as corrupting the state department rather than as the natural product of a state department prone to behaving in ways which would facilitate his rise to the top. Probably no coincidence Israel and Kissinger both Jewish (although perhaps Robert McNamara tends to receive equivalent vitriol in the context of Vietnam).

Kissinger's sabotaging of the peace talks to get Nixon elected is one of the most evil things an individual has done, and is directly linked to the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

Of course, he’s a deeply sinister individual. The point I was making is that while he tends to be portrayed as an outlier (and perhaps he was exceptional to a certain degree), the question that needs to be considered is why exactly a guy like that was able to rise so high in the first place (and still very much celebrated in those circles)?

The other NSAs of his era were McNamara and Briezinski, so he's in good company
I think part of the reason for his infamy is his total lack of regret (compared to McNamara), the worldwide scope of what he did (SE Asia, Bangladesh, Chile, Argentina, East Timor, from wiki), and his association with the nastiest president of that time.

@berbatrick

Not sure if you're disagreeing with @2cents' point or not? I don't think any of what you write is contrary to what was said, yet it still reads like an objection of sorts, and I can't put my finger on what it exactly is. (Can't comment much on the issue itself, just a bit puzzled by the ensuing discussion.)

Just to clarify, in my understanding the main point was:

Stewart seems shocked and surprised that no one turned up and that no one gives a shite about 9/11 first responders. Did he learn nothing from his 15 years as host of the daily show ?

Just come to comment on this. Definitely worth a watch. Quite moving and yes...powerful.

Every citizen is a victim of 9/11. First responsders shouldn't have access to donations or Federal money. They have workers comp insurance and their unions .... Outrageous to assume our tax dollars or donations would allow State workers access to that money.

GunRack
yet we destroy and rebuild Iraq for over a trillion dollars and nobody bothers to ask where that money was coming from.

Uwish250
has nothing to do with this. reason why it's state law in all states for employees to have workers comp insurance should an accident happen while employed
