Looks very bad but the Washington Post commentators on this stream did give a reason for why he would be totally innocent, and have no skeletons to worry about, but still reject it. Ultimately his only way of getting confirmed is by getting all the republicans on board. Essentially undermining their authority and getting the president to do what the republicans have fiercely fought against won't do him any favours with either side. More likely is he's got some skeletons that would catch him out in a lie.
