US Politics

Everybody has very valid points over the last couple of pages but when it came to the crunch a vote for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump would have been the sensible thing to do. There was no real danger in a Hillary presidency no matter what Eboue might say. Congress would grind along slowly as it is doing now and under Obama and Russia would certainly be taken to task over their blatant disregard for our way of life. She would have talked a tough game but very unlikely to put boots on the ground outside of a humanitarian crisis. I also doubt JayZ & Beyonce would be involved in denuclearization talks with a dictatorship either. Dennis fecking Rodman my arse.

Half the electorate also never turned up and voters didn't do their due diligence with the candidates. Johnson and Stein voters knew feck all about the candidates they were voting for and Obama voters who went for trump seemed to believe the bullshit surrounding Clinton and ignored the very real concerns regarding this buffoon of a man.
Regardless of how bad a candidate Hillary was she should have still been the adult choice to make.
Donald Trump for feck sakes. It's one of the most embarrassing things to happen to a western democracy I've ever witnessed and a whopping big mustard diarrhea stain on this country that wont come out for a long time.

That's what the Republicans get for being unable to nominate a candidate to defeat Trump and what the Democrats get for not even trying and falling prey to the really bad idea that a dynastic candidate is entitled to be the nomination.
There was no adult choice to make in 2016. There were only the two worst choices ever.
Can thank Citizens United and how much that empowered the heirs to Tammany Hall.

1-6 are crazy

1, 2, and 6 for us...

I’m in 4.

Is 4 redneck territory?
Some parts yes, some parts no.

We’ve got very affluent areas in the cities Greenville and Spartanburg while also incredibly poor urban areas (former mill hills) and also incredible poor rural ones (like a place called “the Dark Corner”).

I-85 runs through Greenville to Spartanburg, so we’ve got major economic activity near it. The further you get north and south of that, the more rural poverty you encounter.

Northern Greenville County especially, up in the mountains. That’s where the “Dark Corner” is.

It’s the district Trey Gowdy has been representing, fwiw.

NC. 1,4 and 12 are the only blue seats in a state with a steady floor of ~43% voteshare for the Dems (going upto 51%). These are basically (Durham+surrounding majority-black area), Raleigh/Chapel Hill, and Charlotte, the 3 cities in the state. I'm at the edge of the "extension" at the western edge of 1.
4 is particularly funny. At least 12 is contiguous.

Look at what they used to be...

12 and 4 were used in Poli Sci textbooks as definitions of gerrymandering.

If I remember correctly, 12 at one geographic point was the width of Interstate 85.

When I interned for a state rep in Michigan one of the districts was the width of Westnedge Avenue at one point to keep it contiguous. It's an embarrassment.

Literally the width of the street, didn’t even include property on either side?

Interesting. I've read about Greenville and that upstate SC area. They were a favorite reference point of the Fallows' Our Towns project. I remember the public-private NEXT projects were talked about as well as schools Whittenberg Elementary and Fisher Middle school. They like to compare similarities between Greenville and Burlington, Vermont as sort of liberal-conservative revival city counterparts. Definitely sounded like an interesting town and county.

Fisher is the crown jewel of Greenville County school district.

Not all GCSD schools are treated so well. Trust me.

In my honest opinion, the county to the east does it better as far as school districts are concerned.

Downtown Greenville is a nice place though...

Random thought...

What if protesters put American flags on every Confederate monument?

Would heads literally explode?
They'd think that was awesome. For some reason they balk at the idea that the Confederates were traitors to the United States. It's a blatant whitewashing of history to just paint them as proud good ol' boy Southerners who stood up for their rights instead of traitorous, hate-filled slaveowners who saw black people as disposal property.

How about a Confederates flag in Pride rainbow colors? Now that would explode some minds.

They say that shit. But they all still wish they had slaves.

Just spend enough time living here and you’ll hear what they really think. Especially if you’re white and have a southern accent. They don’t know I’m a spy.

For some reason I find it so fascinating that the US has a select group of people who regard themselves as incredibly patriotic towards the US and yet simultaneously retain sympathies for a group who literally tried to secede.

Imagine hardcore British nationalists celebrating the IRA (different situation I know, but still sort of works) or celebrating the Jacobite rebellions? fecking mental when you consider it.

You mean there’s not Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera statues up all over England!?!

Shock! Horror!

why arent the democrats campaigning on this massively popular policy? is it because they are run by people with no connection to most of america who are beholden to corporate interests?

On this basis there's probably decent support for a NHS too.
