Pat fking Rafter was not a 'great'

Anybody who has watched tennis for the last 40 odd years will quickly and effectively be able to end any argument you can put up on that score

Rafter was a top professional who peaked at the right time and got his just deserts by winning a couple of well deserved majors - in fact he and his compatriot, Pat Cash are a shining light for what can be achieved without being fantastically talented at a given sport but got what they did from sheer hard work and focus and concentrating on what they did best whilst maybe other 'better' more gifted players underestimated them to their cost.
To be fair to Rafter, overall he may have only been a 'good' player but he had the one big weapon of being really fecking excellent at the net (arguably the best of his time and far better than anyone today) and a serve that suited that style of game.

Otherwise I agree with your point. If you're directly comparing Rafter with Djokovic, I'd expect Rafter to win on the old faster Wimbledon and US courts, but Djokovic would win on today's courts. So fairly even at the moment, but Djokovic is still only 23 and has the potential to be a fair bit better than Rafter ever was.

The key difference to me between Federer/Nadal and Sampras/Agassi is the level of consistency that the younger ones have is far better. Every competition, on every surface, you expect them to be there battling it out. Some people put that down to the other competitors being weaker these days, which I disagree with. Others point to the way the courts have changed and how it's easier now to transfer a style of game from one surface to another. Still others say it's simply Federer/Nadal being better.

Personally I feel it's a combination of the second two. The surface does play a part IMO, quite a big part in fact. But I also feel the current two have risen the bar as well.

And when I call Nole "quite good" or "average" people get upset. Broken to love now. He's utterly pathetic.

Pat "average" Rafter was a million times better than this bottler.

Djokovic has a lot of ability but no mental strength to go with it hence why hes a million miles behind the Nadals and Federers of this world, he crumbles at the crucial points which great players dont do.

If he had an ounce of the tuff stuff in the upstairs department he might actually do something in these situations, until he does hes just a laughing stock in such matches.

fecking hell why are you lot having this much of a go at him for? People forget just who the hell he is playing against. The greatest of all time...

Nole has been in 4 consecutive US Open Semi's. This match isn't over yet, and as frustrated as you lot are with him it's 10X worse for me believe me.

Exactly which is why imo he's always going remain an underachiever and a joke in the really big games. I don't know what sort of mental meltdown he has as soon as he faces Federer. Shocking stuff.

Rubbish. Nole has a 3-3 H2H with Fed in his last 6 meetings. These meltdowns in the slams are inexplicable.

NoDjo breaks Fed again in the 2nd set. 2-0 now. Interesting to see quite how he manages to mess it up this time.
If Fed plays like this in the Final Nadal will beat him.

Like I said, no one on here gets more frustrated than me.. but Fed is the greatest and it's no 'shame' to lose to him..

Nole just broke, lets hope he doesn't choke this time.

Federer has been rubbish. He makes so many errors these days it's ridiculous. I can see him getting a proper spanking if he gets to the final.

Nadal must be laughing watching this, Federer miss timing balls left right and centre, Djokovic having his usual mental meltdowns at the crucial points all the while Nadals got his feet up waiting for the final to come around.

Honestly cant see Nadal having any problems beating either of these 2 tomorrow, different level player totally.

I love this thread :D

Federer is the greatest to Fed has been rubbish in the matter of a few minutes :p

But yeah Fed does make tons of errors nowadays. Over a year now that he's really started to lose the plot at times. That said he'll still win in 3 or at max 4 sets today.

He is the greatest, irrespective of todays performance, IMO of course. But anyways lets not go there. Focus!

However if Nole can get a grip mentally then this match is his for the taking really.

Another miss timed balloon out of play from 'the greatest ever ever'...best tennis of his career my arse! hes nothing close to the player he was between 02-08.

Why is that in inverted commas? Some of you really need get a grip on the Federer hatred. Player entering the 30's past his peak shocker!

I'm praying Fed plays like this tomorrow. No way will he beat Nadal if he plays as badly as he's playing right now.

I think his performance against Sod slightly over exaggerated his performance in the tournament here. He's not really played ANYONE half decent until Sod.

And he's in complete meltdown here. Double break now for Nole at 5-1. Even he can't possibly bottle this set now?

Because i dont rank him as the best ever for various reasons that theres no point going into now as itll take the thread off course.

Shock horror not everyone bows to and blows off Federers shclong in worlds greatest ever accolade.

If Federer plays like this he won't beat anyone! This is abysmal!

Novak's been the better player quite easily. Its just that Federer's nous got him the first set. Still dreaming of a Fed-Nadal final but Roger needs to to up his game quite a bit.

Ok this is new territory for Nole. He's taken a set of Roger

If he can keep this up and with Fed just mentally falling apart this match is his.

Yes but this thread isn't even about that. A lot of you like taking little digs, it isn't even in response to anything or relevant. Playing a bad match doesn't change how good one is.

I do agree that he's nowhere near the player he once was. I mean this set he's played like I expected Rooney had he played against Everton!

As much as fan I am of Federer it is a bit funny how crap he's playing. If this is anywhere near the standard he's going to be performing in the final at, should he get through, it's probably better for him to lose than embarrass himself!

Yes but im not saying this off the back of a bad couple of sets here, ive said this repeatedly for years, i dont rank him as the best ever for various reasons that have previously been discussed, just my view, and i find the modern day hype even more frustrating, we had the imbecilic sky commentators talking about Federer playing the best hes ever played this week at the start of this match! its laughable seeing as any respectable tennis fan knows this man is a pale imitation of what he once was and has been for the last 2 years.

Nole had a look in there at 15-30. He needs to take some of his chances. This set is crucial. He can't let Fed get any confidence back at all.

Im actually hoping Federer gets through here, playing like this he could suffer one of the biggest and most humiliating defeats ever to Nadal tomorrow night, which could well finish him as a major slam contender, another body blow given by Nadal in a major final really could damage him long term.

Rafa is already in Rogers head

I can almost imagine that. Admittedly I've only seen bits and pieces of Federer this past couple of weeks but I thought he was looking good - hitting form at just the right time. Then today, playing straight after Nadal he looks like his concentration's shot to pieces. Weird indeed.

I wish I was half as confident as you are. I have too much respect for Federer on hard courts and in the USO specially to be so confident of Nadal beating him.
