US Open Tennis

Where's Kelvin? I recall him telling us all how Federer was past it.

This 1000th post is dedicated to those who thought Federer was finished.

Take that.

I wish I was e-famous and had someone to thank but I've only been here a month.

Well Done Skelter - I enjoyed your tennis company... Must Say Brophs has been lazy this time around... Fecker must go to bed early

Haha cheers mate, I'm sure there'll be plenty more with us both on Betfair. Shame this is the last slam of the season.

Yep - Am a Betfair regular.

Started off well at the US Open but panned out towards the end. We still have the ATP masters to some with the top 8

If I was to pick the three players to look out for at the end of 2008 I would say.

Men's (I am not putting Murray in as he is already there)
Gulbis
Del Porto
Monfils

Women's
Zheng
Cornet
Radwanska

Hmmm...

I think I understand why you chose to support Manchester United.

Will you start supporting Arsenal if/when United aren't succesful any more?

Choosing to support the best team/individual in any competition is weird, IMO. And very American. Oh well, each to his own.

To be fair Pogue, you really can't compare supporting a team to an individual. I want Federer to win his games because I enjoy watching him play. Federer will eventually retire and you get a new favourite whom you enjoy watching. So Brits should really be under any obligation to support Murray.

Del Potro and Zheng have impressed me a lot this year. I hope Del Potro isn't too hurt from his loss to Murray, he was in tears afterwards but he's only 19 and I'm sure there's a lot more to come from him. Zheng is a little warriror, she won everyone over at Wimbledon.

I'd agree with that, not too sure about Del Porto though. What do you make of Tsonga Baz? Granted only saw him in the Aussie Open, but I was very impressed nevertheless. Pity about the injuries.

And if you're ever down in London, I'll give you a game of tennis. Should be an easy chance to avenge my chess defeat. ;)

Cann't see the top 2 on the women being there next year and you can add Sharipova into that as well. I think they are hopeless. Zheng would have had a grand slam if she was had a good ankle. This year her injuried have not been so bad

Del Potro is some talent. At 19 years of age, he needs to control his temperament like all 19 years old when they arrive. Gulbis is my big shout

Tsonga has been injured alot since the French and had little match fitness coming into US open which showed. Jury out on him, Could be a one hit wonder, but Monfils is the real French star to look out for

In relation to the Tennis match - I can assure you I am good and was Number 8 in Leinster at the age of 16. Played recently and did very well. I'd tank you even more then the chess

I'd agree concerning the women's game. However if Serena can keep her focus she should be at the top for a while. Venus outplayed her in their match and at Wimbledon though, shame about those set points. :nervous:

Serena cost me big at Wimbledon, though I did win money on them both being in the final.

Typical that she would beat her sister and win the next tournament.

I don't buy theses fix claims though, do you? There's too much passion there.

Gulbis is the best of the lot I reckon.

I'm not familiar with the quality of tennis in Leinster but I can assure I'm pretty good as well and was thinking more along the lines of giving you a 2 point handicap.

"I had a great tournament but I came up against, in my opinion, the best player ever to play game the today," said Murray.

"I got the better of him the last two times and he definitely set the record straight today. I've learnt I've got a lot of improving to do if I want to win one of these things.

"I love playing in front of this crowd - it's been the best time of my life."

Good on the lad. What a photo, if only the trophy was a bit clearer, I suppose that's the point.

No, I never have thought that since I think it was around 2002-03 when Serena kept beating Venus in finals. If it was fixed they did not exactly do a good job of sharing the spoils did they. As you said too much passion and commitment in the games to think otherwise in my opinion. More so when considering their response to those claims.

Yeah I reckon Monfils could do well in the future

Federer got lucky again. He should thank Murray for defeating Nadal:lol:

Venus is the better grass court player, Serena is the better hard court player; that said Serena is probably the better of the two

Congrats to Federer, shows his old form back, may it long continue.
His serves are unbelievable, and those cross shots were great. Murray look lost there in the first set, and I for one can't blame him, Fed is just really good today.

13 Grand Slams, can he equal Sampras record next year?

Fair play to Federer, he was back to his brilliant best today. Even Nadal at his best wouldn't have had a prayer against this Federer on this super fast hard court.
Beforehand I thought Federer would win comfortably. It was Murray's first final, it is so difficult to win your first mayor. Specially when your playing somebody who has been in 17 (!) finals. Murray's time will come, mark my words.

Four Reasons why Murray would never ever win a Grand Slam

His oranguatan racquet weilding style dosent really fit in Australian Open

He can go past the quarters of French open only if all top players pull out with the threat of another World war looming large.

He cannot win the Wimbledon as long as Federer, Nadal and ten more grass court players hanging around.

He wont reach the finals of US Open again.

Interesting made up stuff from yourself.

Murray can, but so can many others. Tennis is one of the most competitive sports if not THE most competitive one on one sport in the world. To have a 21year old Scot as number 4 in the world and even challenging two of the greatest tennis players EVER (Federer, Nadal) is a fantastic achievment.

He can and will win at least 1 grand slam. He has it in him to do it.

These seem sensible conclusions to draw from the fact he only lost to the Winner of Wimbledon, then beat him on his way to the Final of the US Open.

Federer would have annihilated him at Wimbledon, even not at his best

Also every person Nadal beat at Wimbledon only lost to the Winner of Wimbledon

Federer would annihilate most players at Wimbledon not at his best, that doesn't mean they're never going to win a Grand Slam.

Also every person Nadal beat at Wimbledon only lost to the Winner of Wimbledon

The fact they came up against the winner makes it difficult to judge their performances.
