I know they renovated it, but yeah, it's not close either. It's also still in Florida, not much helping that. :(

I understand why a lot of American stadiums were built on the outskirts of town or in de-industrialized areas, but it's really dumb. Admittedly, downtown Atlanta was completely dead the last time I went to a major sporting event at the Georgia Dome (RIP) so the location didn't matter too much. Bank of America in Charlotte, Superdome in New Orleans, M&T Bank in Baltimore, and Atlanta have some of the best locations I've been to in terms of proximity to everything else.

What the feck? No Chicago? It’s the third largest city in the US and has a huge football market. I’ve been waiting fecking forever for this. There are going to be games in fecking Kansas, Philadelphia and Boston but not Chicago? What is this shit?

I will definitely see a few in Atlanta. I love Mercedes Benz. The beer and consessions are shockingly low thanks to Arthur Blank. Marta has a large station right next to it. If we drive in we get to the lot early and tailgate with the others to avoid the idiocy of all the roads converging into those lots.

Chicago would have the smallest stadium and it's not a good fit for that reason, politics aside. Operationally, Chicago can handle it extremely well as they showed for Gold Cup and recently a few years ago.

If you look at all the venues selected, I think all in the United States are NFL stadiums and pretty new/updated. And in big cities that can accomodate multiple teams, media, fans, etc. Travel for the knockout rounds shouldn't be too crazy and there will be four regions (West, South, Southeast, and Northeast).

The assurances were most likely related to stadium upgrades and anything the city would have had to foot the bill for to be World Cup ready. Chicago still and will always have scars from their host city bid attempt for the 2016 Summer Games. That played into the minds of Rahmbo and company. So assurances were necessary for him and the City to make sure they were considered for the knockout rounds, to get financial support, and not get embarassed again on the global stage for a global event.

Downtown Atlanta should see Centennial Yards development by the time the WC hits. Large commercial and living development in that area. Highly recommend taking Marta.

i went to the match between Holland and Ireland in 94 in Orlando....what a brilliant experience

went to the WC Final in 1999 out in LA b/w the US and China...was a guest of Dave Vanole who worked with the US womens as the GK Coach

Looking forward to this and to attending a game or two. Luckily there's a reasonable chance that the US will have a decent side in 2026 so fingers crossed the team can progress in the knockout stages.

Most major sports competitions that come with major infrastructure investments as preconditions for hosting - principally the World Cup and Olympics - end up costing the host more than it generates. That’s the mayor’s gentle way of saying he doesn’t think it’s worth taking the financial hit in exchange for the prestige, spectacle and other assumed but highly questionable benefits these events bring.

AT&T is not in Dallas city let alone Dallas county, it's in Arlington (Tarrant County) about 20 miles west of downtown Dallas.

The Meadowlands is in Jersey and yet almost everyone calls it New York.

Sure, but it's 20 minutes from Dallas by car, rather than an hour like Foxborough and Santa Clara. There's absolutely no public transit to get to AT&T though.

The Meadowlands is at least listed as New York/New Jersey, and everyone living in that part of Jersey likes to pretend it's NY so... :lol:

20 minutes at 4am perhaps.

Edit: They should extend the rail that runs from DFW IAP to both downtown Dallas and Fort Worth and have a line that runs just south of I-30 to connect the two major cities, and perhaps stop at/near AT&T. Perhaps it's not doable or perhaps local politics refuse.

Yeah, they might be bringing in some Fortune 100 companies downtown to those digs and it's pretty impressive...not the largest plot of land, of which you're familiar, but better than what is there now.

Agreed on both counts....Houston getting a second site is f'ing ridiculous and Chicago wasn't even on the list yet it hosted the opening ceremony and game at the 94 World Cup

the middle of the country got screwed which forces everyone to travel a stupid distance to attend a match.

Areas like Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincy, Nashville are MASSIVE soccer markets but completely overlooked which never should have happened

Toronto has a small stadium and although the location is good, it really isn't that great a venue.

Toronto will get a few shite group stages games. Not enough to really bring the city together as it should as Canada finally has qualified and Toronto is probably the most diverse city on earth.

I wish we had multiple stadiums in close proximity or Toronto hosted with fewer cities.

A Toronto/Montreal/New York/Detroit/Chicago would be epic to say the least.

The west coast has much better weather, no way I would want to spend my time in half of those places. Detroit is a dead city, literally. Chicago should have been included in the list though, really fun city for visitors.

The atmosphere with the Dutch/Irish fans is something i'll never forget.....the f'ing Dutch women i saw at that stadium, My God. Had a great time partying with fans from both countries which was great as my heritage is dutch/irish. Orlando put on a heck of a job hosting that event especially considering the heat and knowing full well it was important having water stations and spray stations to help cool down.
 
Sorry but i think there were some really stupid choices of locations....There is NO reason Philly should have gotten selected and the same for Houston.

You look at the middle part of america and it is basically left empty. Houston should have gone to Nashville and Philly should have gone to a place like DC or Chicago just to balance out travel for those states in and around the midwest and DMV area.

I know i might be a bit bias having lived in Nashville but every time the US or a big club tour has taken place here, Nissan Stadium is packed with 80k people. It's an easy 3-4 drive from big cities in the midwest part of the country and the party scene in downtown would have been perfect for a World Cup.

The only close place is atlanta and i hate the f'ing city b/c it's shiiit traffic and it's a dangerous place to visit once night time hits the city. No other location is closer than a 9 hour drive for most fans living in the middle of the US.

I literally have no recollection of the match as I went out the night before to Firestone, finally extricating myself sometime around noon. I then proceeded to take a couple hits of acid, hung out & people watched at Church Street Station, barely remember floating west to the Citrus Bowl, & losing my mind in the stands. I sure as shit had fun though!

Toronto will be buzzing regardless of what games they stage. My concern is transport, its bad enough getting to TFC games these days, and these games are way under capacity at the minute. They will need to add another 15k capacity to bring it up to min world cup capacity standard. Try getting a train west after the ex and it's a shit show and they are talking of hosting world cup parties in the same ground. Plus that tunnel between the ex Go and access back to liberty village will need changed. I know that's been in the pipeline for a while anyway. Exciting but there's a lot of planning and work to be done.
