Unpopular (AKA fickle) opinion time on AWB.....

This will prove to be a good thing for AWB. It will highlight how important it is to be a brilliant defender. The naive opinions of him being a liability will soon realise how good he is defensively.

Cause he plays every game, people take it for granted. Dalot has already been poor on stopping a couple of crosses coming in.

The red card can be forgiven. Teams actively press us into passing the ball to our RB positions so we don’t have an attacking outlet.

He’s not the level required for Manchester United and no amount of tackling will mask that for me.

He has to sharpen up his touch. That tackle is completely avoidable if he controls the ball correctly in the first place

He's always gotten better through a season, so let's hope that happens again.

You can understand the red today. Turf isn't the same as grass. It's still brainless and idiotic, but can happen.

I'm far more worried about his last 5 matches than the red.

That was not a good moment. A poor touch, that happens, but then to compound it with that terrible challenge really was quite silly. Two really bad pieces of play rolled into one horrible moment that's put us in trouble.

It shouldn't change the assessment of him too much. He's always had a slightly rash element and every man and his dog knows his technical limitations so no need to be too over the top or reactionary. It's a position we know that we at the very least need competition for and Ole knows that.

Nearly every player slipped on this artificial pitch.

Did AWB not slip in that tackle?

There's a reason we tried to sign a RB in the summer. If he continues this season in the same vain, he'll be starting the next one from the bench.

He's a good tackler and last ditch defender. Poor positioning, poor heading, poor first touch, cannot run with the ball, cannot dribble. That's not a Man Utd fullback. The contrast between him and Shaw is day and night.

He is so lucky we live in the times that we do right now otherwise I’d have a few words for him. Shaking my head.

People thought Sancho would somehow bring out the best in him

Both of them have been so bad whenever they've played together on the right.

AWB is literally incapable of playing football at times.

Red cards can happen, wouldn't go overboard criticising him on that score.

But his technical limitations are very evident generally and just as much so today. With so much quality around him he stands out as a weak spot technically.

Tbf we were obviously interested in Trippier, so it's not like we don't know it's an issue. Hopefully Dalot does well and stakes a claim to be serious competition.

If you think Trippier is good enough, your in for a rude awakening if we sign him.

AWB is improving. When did we become the club that don't allow youth to develop, make mistakes and grow. I remember having this same argument over and over about Shaw - now everyone finally see's it all of a sudden like he just started being good.

AWB, McTominay, Jese Lingard and many more players who get unfair criticism, are good players. This toss the baby out with the bad water attitude is NOT Manchester United.

Trippier is NOT the answer speak to any old Spurs fan, heck just watch him.

+1 It's ridiculous that he got an unfortunate red card, and immediately "fans" are piling up on him. Disgraceful.

AWB is not the best right back, but he isn't the weakest link in our squad and generally is adequate.
It's how he got the red card which was because his first touch fecked him and he had to make that tackle.
It's absurd how bad he is technically

Can blame the pitch, can blame his touch, but what is obvious is that AWB has been the weak link in this side for a long time, and this will need addressing. You need quality on both sides, and he offers very little and kills pretty much every attack down the right.

Did AWB not slip?

I don't think so no, but even if that was the case the he had a terrible first touch (as per standard) that caused him to stretch into a challenge.

We joke that his second touch is a tackle for a reason.

I don't especially care about the red as it can happen but he's probably not the RB a team expecting to dominate the ball want.

He's great in games were we play top sides, because you can trust him to defend one vs one. In games against poorer sides, we need someone better on the ball as an option

I kind of want this too. I like Wan Bissaka but if I'm wrong I don't mind.

Give Dalot the chance, tell Wan Bissaka he has to improve. Lets see how we play with Dalot both defensively and attacking with players like Sancho and Varane before we see where Wan Bissaka's qualities lie.

As the quality of other players go up, we'll see the lack of footballing ability more and more in our lesser talented players. AWB's lack of footballing ability sticks out like a sore thumb. How has he not worked on his on the ball play I do not know.

I don't blame him to be fair. He doesn't pick himself to start football games. The guy is living a charmed life. He's a lower league "footballer" getting paid millions while being picked week in, week out for the biggest club in the world because his only real attribute is tackling.

This is Dalot's chance now to stake his claim. Shaw, Maguire and Varanes defensive capabilities should take the pressure off and allow him to attack plenty.
Evra was very average defensively but it didn't matter much as Brown, Ferdinand and Vidic made up for it.
Bissaka just hasn't the technique to be at a top club and no amount of training will improve this.
The signing still baffles me, could you ever imagine Real, Barca or Bayern in for him, well, we shouldn't have been either.

Bad tackle but tackling is his strength so don’t know why there’s a little pile on here.

Well most that slate a player obviously want to be wrong as it means they get better and are good enough. I like AWB but I have my doubts he will be good enough in the long term

I don't really mind about the tackle, he is normally sound at that. But his general play is so ponderous it's obviously not at the level we need it to be.

Flipping heck. After his first red card?!
Damn, how many times this needs to be said;
He is pro football player in starting 11 in one of the biggest clubs in the world who;
Can. Not. Control. Bloody. Ball! In other words, he is payed for kicking the ball with his foot and he doesn't know how to do it.

Christ, the hyperbole on here! He made a mistake, get over it. Happens to everyone!

Got no problem with the red card, as that could happen. Problem is he's shit on the ball, and we can forget about any type of progressive play down the right as long as he's on the pitch.

Except he's not a brilliant defender. He's great 1v1, but he's got poor positioning and his covering at the back post on crosses is also usually poor.

No doubt he's been decent for us, in no way has he been "brilliant".

Looking at Dalot to imply why AWB is a brilliant defender is a weird take.

Time for people to overreact again.

I’ve never been a fan of him. Apart from his tacking I don’t see what his positive attributes are. How many times have we been raving about Luke Shaw having a stormer of a game, and how many times have we said the same thing about AWB? I just don’t see it with him.

AWB needs to be benched a bit to take him out of the spotlight.

He's not up to speed and his court case might have played a part in it.

He went into a tackle because of his bad touch. And a bad touch is his trademark.
But yeah these threads work as substitutes for player performance threads during the game.
