United's last minute bid for Sergio Canales?

How do we even know we were interested?...It's a big story for a nobody that madrid and other clubs want him though and obviously he's signed for madrid but that means very little.

If his fathers involved, I imagine the money will come in handy :p

There's no reason yet to think this move will be a bad one for him. He wont officially sign for them till the summer and for all we know he could spend 6-12 months on loan next season. At his current rate of progress from last season he could be ready to fight for a starting spot at that time.

He's already about as effective as some of the players that people go mad about on here, with another season's experience and maturity he'll probably be knocking on the door for a spot in the national team.

is this his first season? he's still a kid lets see what he does next year

Second season. Made his debut last season coming off the bench 6 times. He's featured in 11 matches so far this season in la liga (5 starts) and has 5 goals and 1 assist to show for it. He's also played a few cup matches and scored at least 1 in that competition too.

I doubt we were.

There is no chance that we were going to get him.

Yeah but why would a Spanish player be dumb for joining the largest team in Spain if not the world.

They have a point though. Manchester United produce more homegrown talent then Real do.

I think Real Madrid win with Spanish players though.

Besides, Canales would never have been one of our homegrown talents would he.

So anyway, during the real madrid match on just now they said Canales is staying on loan at Racing next season. Thats the season on loan he probably needs before he turns out in a Real Madrid shirt.

I wouldnt be surprised if they just saved themselves £30 million by signing Canales instead of Silva. Nor would I be surprised if after that loan period, Canales was the better player. Still, he wouldnt be the first young player to stall in their development. He cant sit on his laurels, he needs to work hard from now till then.

i don't think you can say second season when you say he only featured in 6 matches because that is not enough games for the whole devision to be aware of his qualities....

It also don't tell us what games, for all we know they might have been dead rubbers

20+ games sure but 6? nah. He's only really made his name this season. Now people are aware of him and he gets a move to Madrid. Let's see how often he plays. Still early days

When you look at Rafael last season from out of nowhere. Nearly 30 games, this is his second season. people know him. It's no suprise if he's selected etc

He'll play every week because he's on loan at Racing till the end of next season.

Well Canales doesn't count as home grown talent. Besides this lad is truly talented as Cruyff himself confessed. I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually went on to have a Raul like influence on them in the future.

He may not be homegrown talent but he is certainly not the typical galactico. I wouldn't call anyone whom at such tender age may already be a millionare as dumb but we can safely assume that he would have had more first team chances with us then Real.

Which is why he's on loan for a season and a half at the club who gave him his breakthrough and already got the attention of the big boys.

No matter how you spin it, for now he's in a great position. In fact sorting his future out like he has may make next season easier to continue develop and not stall with all the stories of clubs after him distracting him. He just has to play football and improve as a footballer. Then after next season he'll turn up at Madrid - either he'll be good enough by then or he wont be and maybe he'll be loaned out again. But as yet Canales doesnt seem to be in a rush.

Reports on the Tweeter say Madrid have made him available, some saying as low as 6m Euros. Did he turn out to be shit?

He's quality, still shows it for Spain under 21s. Unfortunately Madrid's depth is too much for him to get playing time. He should go on loan to a Spanish club, I bet he'd be back on form in no time.

I dont think for a second that Madrid will be letting him go permanently right now. The reason they signed him was because he's Spanish. He's still Spanish.

I thought it was because Pellegrini was investing in youth and building a proper team(buys like arbeloa, canales and metzelder for example) and that didnt sit well with valdano/perez's idea of the galacticos?

In which case Madrid would never have signed them

The men with all the power in Spain are the club presidents, not the manager. If they dont like something it simply doesnt happen.

Last summer and still to this point in time, quality Spanish players are all the rage. Why wouldnt they be when you're a Spanish club and the Spanish national team are world and european champions? The Madrid fans want Spanish players too. And you know what they're like, if Barcelona has lots of Spanish nationals then Madrid need them too. Canales is a player who until this season was on his way to getting a call up for the full squad. He's still young and he'll still get it in time I'd think

Metzelder signed in 2007. 2 years before Pellegrini became manager

Also, he's not young or Spanish

I would love to see him here. He can be huge if he comes here. Another lad would made the mistake of choosing Real over us and now regretting his decision.
