United States-led 2026 World Cup bid in jeopardy to Morocco's

On a side note it'll be great to see hundreds of thousands of football fans getting smoked on amazing weed instead of stumbling around the place pissed.

Not true. You can get some really cheap return flights from most places in Europe and Marrakech, Casablanca, Fez and Tangier are served by some low cost airlines - just book a couple of months in advance. Once there you can go low on hotels / dorms if you wish, or hire a whole villa and compound ! It most certainly doesn't have to be expensive and car hire is very cheap with petrol reasonable too.
Thanks Rafateria. I’m from South Africa - so the exchange rate isn’t quite as kind to us as it is for most traveling from elsewhere

But I suppose you’re correct. You can travel to just about anywhere on a budget! Just depends on what you’re looking for/willing to compromise on.

Trump is nothing, America is still a great country and he won’t even be in office in 2026. I would definitely travel to the states for the World Cup, I think they would put on a fantastic tournament.

I'd take a Moroccan World Cup over the States in a heartbeat.

This.

Also, gives me a reason to go visit Marrakech, as I've heard that it's quite pricey.
It's a lot cheaper than similar European destinations when it comes to villas and nights out, at least in my experience but everyone holidays differently.

I'd imagine getting a tourist visa to Morocco would be infinitely easier than the USA, regardless of the party in control of Congress/WH, so that's a huge plus in their favour.

You have Cape Town, Kruger NP and easy access to Botswana, the Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls ! I'd be like a pig in shit over there and wouldn't want to go anywhere else :D

I'm sure Morocco would be amazing World Cup hosts. May be a bit off topic but I'm really not looking forward to this year's world cup. I don't think A worse place than Russia could have been picked. I've never visited myself but good friends of mine have been there for an international match and said it was the worst place they ever visited and they have travelled all over the world to watch international matches. Facilities were non-existent, the people were unfriendly, believe it or not they even got mugged by the cops. It will be a disaster.

Yeah, that's true.

 indeed. We have some amazing natural beauty over here. I don't understand the type to run away constantly, yet they've not seen more than 10% od what SA/Africa have to offer.

Qatar?

Canada-USA-Mexico joint bid? Why? That's over 20 million square kilometres of land. Bigger than Russia in its entirety - and thankfully, all Russian World Cup venues will be in the European part of the country.

How the feck is the US getting another world cup, and we haven't had one since 1966?

This is what I would like to know. The home of football, with the best league system, against a country who doesn't even like football & has ridiculous country wide football system & leagues. Obviously give it to the latter. I would rather Morocco got it than them, as they are at least fanatical about the game. The only reason there are serious concerns about anyone than the biggest footballing nations holding the WC is because of the infrastructure & facilities, which is all to do with FIFA nonsense of inviting the league of nations to the finals instead of a more compact amount of teams.

(about +9.000 kms)
1st match, Guadalajara, Mexico or Vancouver, Canada

(about -4.000 kms)
2nd match, New York, USA

(about another 4.000 kms.)
3rd match, Los Angeles, USA

(about another +4.000 kms.)
4th match, Boston, USA

back home ( about + 5.000 kms)

Total distance covered, about 26.000 kms.

yup, great.
That's about 2 times the diameter of the whole earth, measured at the equator (longest distance possible). Must come very cheap only considering flight tickets....(unless you are considering driving, in which case each trip by land, between cities, means about 36 hours of continuous driving, with no stops)

Compare that to what it would be, if the WC is held in Morocco, where the biggest distance between 2 of its big cities of over 100.00 inhabitants in them or possible host cities (Oujda - Agadir), is only slightly below 900 kms, being most of them (big cities) at a radius of not more than 250 kms from Casablanca. Biggest distance covered would be the flight from London to Casablanca (and back, when all is over), which is only slightly above 2.000 kms.

What a joke if Morocco wins the bid over the North American one.

I see this as the main reason:

There was already a leeriness towards the United States in corners of the football world, particularly in South America, as some national federations remain upset over how an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice exposed widespread corruption among their executives.

Corrupt FIFA officials have egos that bruise like peaches and memories like elephants. They will neither forget nor forgive the US State Dept. for a long time, or at least until money changes hands (and when has that ever happened?).

That said while on the face of it a US bid looks far more attractive than that of Morocco due to their superior existing infrastructure, I see no reason why new nations shouldn't be made hosts if their bids are credible.

North America can host a world cup as soon as they stop referring to football as soccer.

And when they elect a none intellectually challenged president.

To be honest, that will happen in Russia too possibly. What if your first match is in Smolensk and your second match is in Lavrentia. That like 9.000kms right there. Then again, the organisation could just take this into consideration and don't have the locations of games in a single group be spread out as far as possible :)

that being said, with this reasoning, all up coming tournaments should be held in the Netherlands, our country is roughly the size of a football field. No traveling required at all.

What the hell does England have to do to get another World Cup?

After Russia, one of the next 2 european World Cups will definitely be in the UK.

I think Spain will get one soon too and I'm pretty sure we'll join in on that. Might even be a Spain-Portugal-Morocco World Cup at some point which would be pretty cool.

Feck them. Keep all World Cups for Europe and Africa so that we get convenient timings.

This nonsense again?
No football thread involving the United States is complete without some obnoxious Eurotrash twit bringing up the "it's called football"-argument.

:)

I do know soccer is derived from the term asocciation football which originated in England mind you.

Trump is nothing, America is still a great country and he won’t even be in office in 2026. I would definitely travel to the states for the World Cup, I think they would put on a fantastic tournament.
He'll still be president when the voting takes place.

USA last had it in 94 and they arent even a football mad nation. There are any number of countries that should be in front of them in the queue. England the home of football and the most watched and supported league in the world hasnt had one since 66.
I'd also support England rather than the US. Don't understand why USA need to get everything their way.

Love Morocco but it's probably a big ask in terms of infrastructure and investment. In terms of tourism infrastructure investments should pay off eventually but stadia and training facilities would be either inadequate or oversized and wasteful.

I don't pick up the tab, but feel for those who would for decades.

Yeah same here, would love England to host another World Cup (we are due one). But if not would like to see America, i don't think they was ready for it 1994, it didn't leave a lasting legacy there, but America seemed to have adopted football a lot more now, i think them hosting a World Cup would be great for football in America.

That would be awesome

USA 1994 is still the highest attended WC of all time and left a massive legacy (major professional league now, huge fanbase for football - see the # of PL fans from the States now, was by far the largest traveling fanbase for both of the last 2 WC's, etc).

It was an absolutely SMASHING success.

Well If they get 2026, hopefully it will leave an even bigger one.

I'd like Italy to get another world cup.

Would force the Italians to sort the stadium issues out which would go a big way to strengthening the club's and the league.

Morocco? North Africa isnt exactly the safest place to stage a WC is it and do they have the stadiums or infrastructure? Is this another Qatar bung job?

If you did some quick research on Morroco's economy, available infrastructure and the political atmosphere you'd see that your assumptions are unfounded.

A mexico canada US bid would be such a big area to travel, also would all the teams automatically get into the world cup? Would like to see Morocco get it US had one recently and Mexico has had two so they don't need one soon

Not sure what you're getting at here – Morocco’s counter-terrorism policy is the most effective in the region and unlike Qatar, their local population has a massive appetite for football.
