United find New Rio - Dede

So he's a 23 year old 'prospect' then is he? What's he been up to for the last 5 years then? prospecting?

We already have the 'new' Rio, he's called Chris & he currently has a hole in his head.

btw, I didn't read any of the other posts in this thread only the title...:D

Brasileirao winner, won the Best Defender award in '10, Vasco's best player and one of the best, if not the best players in the league. It may be yours but that's not my definition of a prospect.

You talk like 23 years of age is old! I suspect for the last 5 years he's been learning the game and will continue to do so for the next 5 years.

It's not me who suggests he's a prospect, although the info you give suggests he's well on his way.

Why hasn't he been whisked off to Europe yet though?

Brazil's booming economy means they can not only hold onto young players much longer than they used to, but also attract the players who'd gone to Europe back a lot earlier in their careers.

No Offer Yet

The Brazilian defender, Dede, tipped as Rio Ferdinand's eventual replacement at Manchester United claims that there have been no offers for him.

Juventus and Benfica are said to be among the other clubs interested in the 23-year-old central defender who currently plays for Vasco da Gama.

While admitting he is flattered by the interest and comparisons with Ferdinand, Dede insists that no one has made a formal offer.

"No offer has come yet," he told Globo Esporte .

"I am glad to be compared to a great defender like Ferdinand, but I am only focused on Vasco.

"I was at the national team when a reporter asked me if I will join Juventus.

"I said I like them as they are a big European team, but at this point I am focused only on Vasco.

"If I leave, it will be in a more distant future. Rumours do not affect me."

Thiago Silva, arguably the world's best defender now, left Fluminense at 24.

Yup. 6th biggest in the world. Neymar's wages say it all.

Just considering the likelihood of this signing;
We do have 5 CBs at present, but there are a number of contingencies that might explain our interest:
Vidic's recovery(knee injuries can be difficult to predict)
Rio's fitness(he's a great influence and experience, but how many games a season can you count on)
Smalling, Evans and Jones-
Jones is the only one I could feel certain of becoming a first choice CB in the years ahead. But he could also play a lot at RB, he's more solid defensively than Rafael.

So I can see the interest in Dede, there could be room for him, and he has the quality, he has the speed desired in a modern CB, but with a lot of power, especially in the air.

Great defending you gotta say, but then questions should be raised why he had to make so many last ditch challenges? Certainly has potential. Looks massive!

I have him on Soccer Manger btw

I noticed that too, but it's also the cover you have from teammates, how well they close down as a unit.
Another point is that in Brazil he's considered a CB or Sweeper(hence his nickname- Dedenbauer after 'Der Kaizer' Beckenbauer). So as a sweeper it's his job to clean up as the one-man very last line of defense, so more a compliment to his pace and reading that he can do that.
Also I remember Rio would make a lot of last-ditch challenges early in his career, he would 'space out', but he could recover because of his pace, I remember a lot of people criticizing him for that.

Not sure how serious United's survey of Dede is, 3 young CBs and 2 seniors, most likely an insurance for Rio and Vidic's injuries(planning for all eventualities).

But I like the look of Dede a lot, he has an imposing presence about him, but is also very agile and pacy, and if you look at the earlier highlights, very very strong in the air.

Very Vidic like, I must say.

Determined, great concentration, has the physic for the pl.
Sign him up!

There's one clip, where early in the game, Dede's wagging his finger at Neymar, and Dede says I always let the forwards know early, that they're in for a real game.
So he's not shy, it's the right attitude for a defender.

I don't like the sound of it.. His name rhymes with Bebe... :(

By the way, he almost committed three penalties in that clip against Neymar.

Is he as good as Luke the evangelist though? ;)

Can't help but say he looks to have a good skill set, it's just whether we need another center back with our current crop of talent in that position.

Rafael--------Rio---------Vidic-----------Evra
Jones--------Dede--------Evans----------Fabio

Off topic, but who is that Diego Souza? Couple of brilliant runs and some goals as well.

Was talking to a few Brazilian football fans today who reckoned that Dede will be a better defender than Thiago Silva in the very near future and they also reckoned he is miles better than David Luiz and will probably be the first name on the Seleçao Brasileiro team sheet soon also if not already!!

If the Thiago Silva deal is finally sorted soon Milan will surely bring in Dede as his replacement for 1/3 of the Silva fee they got from PSG. That's why Milan is said to be so keen on selling since they already got his replacement lined up.

Seems like Milan changed their mind though about selling Silva.
