Manchester United are believed to have entered the race to sign Juventus ace Giorgio Chiellini.

United have reportedly joined their Manchester rivals in the quest to sign the talented Italian defender.

New City boss Roberto Mancini is understood to have listed the £12million-rated star as a top priority in the transfer window.

But with United hit by injuries at the back, he faces stiff competition to land his target.

Chiellini has already confessed he feels unsettled at Juventus and has hinted at a move away from Serie A.

The 25-year-old, though, is still a key figure at the Italian club according to his agent Davide Lippe.

"It will be difficult for such an important player to leave Juventus but we will see what happens in January," he told the News of the World.

Lippe said that, so far, he has had no contact from the new City coach but that a move to Manchester was not completely out of the question.

"I haven't heard from Mancini but I couldn't rule out a move to Manchester," he said.

Safe to say it's bollocks as Fergie has already ruled out buying any defenders in January

Would only ever happen if Vidic moves on and that is unlikely. But, he is a top "defender" and he describes no nonsense defending as much as vidic has done the past two years.

Not many defenders are dominating their respective leagues and there aren't many top class defenders around europe atm.

With Ferdinand's recent injury woes and with talk of vidic moving on, we should definitely be looking to bring in a defender of his ability. I know people will talk about "value for money" but he's only 25 and has to be up there right now with the very best, rather splash out whatever we get for Vidic (if he moves) plus a bit more if needed, on him than an inexperienced player like Rodwell.

It's encouraging that his agent is talking openly about some sort of a move in the first place.

To be fair if you're sure it's bollocks then he's got somewhat of a point, as chances are someone else would've read the article and thought it was possible, and it'd make more sense for them to post it.

I think it's a bigger possibility than you think.

I'm just expanding on his point so don't get annoyed at me.

£12m is value for money though.

He'd never go for that fee. Do you not think that a fee of even around £25 mill isn't value for money for a world class defender who's only 25 years old? Bear in mind that Vidic might be leaving too. I'd say that he'd prove good value for money in the long run. A much better option than taking a punt on an unproven youngster.

Think it's debatable whether he's a world class defender yet.

I think you'd be hard pressed to name many better central defenders than him in the world, so yes I'd say he's world class. Was Ferdinand world class when we forked out 30 mill for him? I can't think of a better available defender who we can buy if Vidic leaves, while Rio's problems continue. In that aspect the deal would make sense all round and would represent very good "value for money" imo.

Rodwell is far far from anything like world class but have you seen the price quoted for him, yes he's younger but he represents the much greater gamble.

There aren't that many World Class CB's around atm, none that stand out anyway. He would be a top class addition to our team though.

Probably talking up a chance of a move in order to get a larger pay packet from Juve...

We have those. What we have not had is luck at the back. I bet if we signed any defnder now he'd get injured too.

That's just plain wrong. When has Wes Brown ever been consistantly fit. And I doubt Rio will ever play a full season again, and it appears from what Sir Alex has said that there will always been restrictions on him physically.

Not sure about the Vidic rumours either. But in my opinion we need a top class centre half to form a long term partnership with either Vidic or Evans.

He's a crazy defender, he'd literally kill himself on the pitch. That energy causes him to make some silly FKs at times but he'll be the best defender in the world one day

Wes Brown is our only truly injury prone defender. Rio hardly ever got injured till recently. Vidic too. Evans and O'shea are also not known as injury prone fellas either. Yet all have been injured this year, around the same time!. Along with most of our reserve team defenders and fullbacks. If that doesn't indicate plain bad luck with injuries at the back I don't know what does.

That's up to you. Fair enough. I insist though, I bet if we signed someone new he'd get injured too unless our luck turns.

However I'd still love us to get him regardless. He is my type of defender. Versatile and a hard ass.

Do we? I mean considering that players like Gaz, Wes, Hargreaves and now even Rio Ferdinand are getting pretty unfortunate with injuries then I don't think so. Let us not forget that we have a defensive crisis every year.
