United after USA youngster

I have watched him 4-5 times this year and he has improved a lot from a few years ago. That being said I do not see him playing for United any time soon but he could definitely play in England. I believe he just signed a new contract as well so MLS I am sure will only accept a nice offer for him

Now that he's signed a new contract, he'll get call ups to the US team. That's how it works. Sign him, then show him off, and sell him.

Only played 45 minutes for the US so far.

I still think this kid's best position would be in defense but he's doing quite well on the wing for FC Dallas, basically carrying them this season. He's being grouped into the player of the year award by many pundits.

No (well not much) disrespect to the MLS but I was wondering if Smalling would be getting goals like that if was played as a striker over there?

Just out of curiousity who has this happened to before? I think Brek probably deserves to be called up now as he has been playing really well over the past few weeks. I can see why he wasn't called up before as he did not have a set position and was not playing as good as he is now. Granted he probably could have been called in to some camps over a few players.

maybe under the new regime he'll play more.

I would think he would as he has been playing at a high level for a few weeks now.

I don't see him as a defender at all. He did not look good when he played this year in MLS as a central defender. Plus, I would be very happy to have a winger on the USMNT who can score.

I am sure he would score at least once

I believe defense is where SAF and his scouts felt he would excel back when they were initialing scouting him. I seem to recall an article where it was mentioned they felt his best future position would be in defense.

We know the US needs a ball playing defender just as much as a solid left winger, probably more so than the latter. Considering how well he's played at left wing I don't think relocating him would be in his best interest at the moment. But I always saw him as a ball playing central defender in the future mainly due to his height and ability on the ball.

He could be best suited as a Central defender, but I just don't see it happening now that he is playing so well on the wing. Like I posted earlier in this thread a lot of people liked what they saw when he played central defense on the MLS tour, but he didn't look to good when he played there this year.

Is Brek fast?

He's quick. I wouldn't call him Young fast, but he can move.

I think he has all the attributes to be on a solid PL team, just not ours. I still see his head looking down at the ball too much and he relies on the ole' push and run technique too much. Much like Valencia used to back in his Wigan days.

But he certainly has the build and confidence to do damage. He shouldn't play too much tonight because he's averaging almost two games a week for the past month. He'll get injured if they keep that pace with him.

Saw him play years ago in a French tournament for under 20s (Toulan?) and he stood out for me then. Might of just been his crazy hair :nervous:

Apart from the obvious "whooosh" moment  ... When was Young at Wigan?

During the game last night, Rob Stone said Brek's agent told him he'd probably move in the next transfer window (not sure if he meant January when MLS is over or next summer) and there was a 'big' German club in for him this summer.

Stiiill not quite got it right there...

It was a long day.... :( Give me a Brek....

I'll say this - he impressed me yesterday. I thought he hung with the best of them considering he's been averaging two games a week for the past month.

Haha City... I hope they meant Norwich. He'd be mental to go to City. Johnson is a far superior player and can't see more than 5 minutes.

Physically, he's a monster, built just like Ronaldo at his age. BUT his technical ability is off. He doesn't have close ball skills, it's mostly kick in front and sprint. He'll have a tough time in Europe. Go to Holland Brek and learn your technical game.

Apparently it was Schalke, this is what Greg Seltzer said about it :

You know how I do; sometimes, I am asked by one party or another to keep something quiet. Naturally, I do it because it's the proper thing to do and, well, I'd like for people to trust me so they continue telling me things. However, deals are off when it comes out elsewhere wrong. To say I don't like misinformation would be putting it mildly.

This morning, one of the scummy UK rags either guessed right or heard something, then of course made up "facts" around it as if they had the straight goods. So, here I am.

Yes, Schalke was the "big German club" Rob Stone correctly referenced as coming in for Brek Shea just before the recent transfer deadline during the Belgium friendly broadcast. However, there was no offer. Basically, it went something like this...

(riiiing) Schalke: Hello. How much would Brek Shea cost us to acquire now?

FC Dallas/MLS: (some dollar figure nobody's telling)

Schalke: Oh... okay. Maybe talk to you later. Tchuss.

- Greg Seltzer

He also said this the other day:

"These BS reading are off the charts, Ray."
It's been brought to my attention that various UK rags (I don't know why anyone ever believes them) have Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all bowing up with drawn knives over FC Dallas ace Brek Shea. His agent just told me, chuckling, that this was all news to him.

I think he's probably at about the level of development that Dempsey was when he left. Probably a bit more athletic but a little less skillful, but not by much.

I'd be surprised if he's ever a regular for a top side, but he could go on to have a big impact at a smaller club the way loads of other Americans have (Reyna, McBride, Dempsey, etc).

He's promising for us and needs to move to Europe before he gets stuck where he is development-wise. I think a lot of American players stagnate somewhat playing at MLS level rather than making the jump. He's got the physical attributes to be a good player. I think Joshua Gatt could potentially be better but he's also very young. I'd like to see him somewhere in Germany, Holland, or England. It might be interesting for him to go to a club like Everton.

If Donovan falls off his game too much by 2014, Shea might be the best choice on the left wing. Dempsey's better for us in the middle, Holden'll probably be on the right.

Yeah, by 2014 it could be much different. Wouldn't be surprised if Torres and Holden were in the middle.

I think Donovan will be a sub at that point.
