United activate option to extend Victor Lindelof's contract until 2025

Some strange overreactions in here. For where the squad is right now, he’s not bad as a squad option for now, and it’s only a one year extension.

Absolute rubbish, a ridiculous extension in my opinion.

He’s poor and has been that since he joined. A lot of talk is made of who isn’t a Manchester United player and this guy right here is the prime example discounting the wasters that are lazy.

From day one he was the softest defender I’ve ever seen play for the club and now he’s on track to be here for 8 seasons, it’s ridiculous. How many times will he get bullied by strikers or put him hands behind his back while backpedaling towards our goal allowing shots on target.

I think we'll need to look for a starting CB in the summer, so taking up the option on a reliable back up option seems like a no brainer.

Don’t mind it in this instance I guess. He can be a good defender on his day (weak and infuriating at his worst).

I can see why people argue he’s part of the survivor culture that really needs to go.

It's a no brainer of a decision. He's a decent squad option if we keep him and if we want to sell him, we'll be able to get a fee for him. He's not on silly wages that we won't be able to sell him.

I'm reluctant to use the word Lacklustre to describe Victor, only as it has the word Lustre in it. Hes the most passive defender I've ever seen at United. The anti Rafael. Bailly's opposite in all areas bar heading, which they're both equally shite at.

The best you can say about him is he's rarely injured and seems a very decent fella, which is better than most we've brought into the club since SAF left.

I hope we sell in the summer but fair play, he's always done his best in a red shirt.

He's a great squad option, and served us well whenever he was called to first team. The last we need at the moment is replacing our bench when our main starting lineup needs a lot of work. Good decision.

He’s not a great squad option. Every time we get an injury and he’s back in we are awful defensively. He needs culling like most of this terribly assembled squad.

rewarded how, it’s an optional extra year which keeps him on the same terms but holds his value instead of it plummeting towards a free.

our club can’t win, we don’t sell well but when we protect value we are rewarding mediocrity.
Let the contract expire

Pretty sure it’s what every big club would do. Although they wouldn’t need to because they’d have found a buyer by now, United couldn’t sell a bible to a Christian

well let’s remember there is going to be new people doing this so let’s have a little faith for once eh.

It's the sensible thing to do. He is a very useful squad option if nothing else, and if we don't want him next season we could sell him. However, we should focus on upgrading our first (or second) choice players rather than our third or fourth choice players.

Not a great start to the INEOS tenure. There is no resale value by extending his contract. He earns too much money, more money than any club in the world is willing to pay for an average CB.

We won’t be able to sell him and he will end up staying here as a CB option until his contract expires. This is precisely the problem at the club. We would be better off bringing in a free transfer player rather than extending his contract. Even Evans looks more assured than Lindelof which proves we can find these options in the market. He’s not good enough and has shown that since in joined. You need 1 or 2 seasons to judge a player, not 5 or 6!

The club cannot attract the type of player we used to, ones which are signed developed and unleashed on the world, so we re-sign players like Lindelof.

feck sake

Mediocrity being rewarded at United again
They think they will sell him for good money...

They never learn that if you are overpaying people and their employment is guaranteed they have zero motivation to leave for less salary just to help you

Well there's certainly more resale value in triggering the optional year than not.

All of our CBs but Martinez faces uncertain futures at the club, and we should sell at least two or three CBs (aside from Martinez) whoever that brings us the most income to reinvest.
Lindelof shouldn't be anything more than a backup for us if he stays the extra year.

It makes sense. There's question marks over the future of all our CBs except Martinez, so I don't see any issue with extending Lindelöf's contract for a year.

I don't like seeing the outgoing regime making decisions like this, I hope they got Ineos' approval first.

Just what the fxxk is going on? Why do we constantly keep on rewarding mediocrity? How many times have we seen this happen over the last 8/9 years? The list of players who we retain that a properly run club would get rid of is endless, yet we keep adding to it! Smalling, Jones, Pogba, Fellaini, Lingard, Rojo, Martial, Bailly, Fred, Dalot, Maguire, McTominay, Varane, Sancho, Antony etc etc; City, Liverpool and Arsenal wouldnt have touched any of these with a barge pole, let alone pay ridiculous fees for or wages to, and you can add Rashford, Bruno and Shaw to that list. Who is actually running our club? Mr Blobby? The Chuckle Brothers? Do we actually have a transfer/recruitment system or does somebody, the tea lady perhaps, just stick a pin in a list of names? We are a bloody JOKE and its not good enough!

I hope the only reason we have done this is that we can get some money for him so he does not leave on a free

Aye, if this is the reason, even if it's selling him for £10m then fair enough.

Otherwise it's a shit move.
