UK and ROI Euro 2028 | Official - it's coming home (except to Northern Ireland)

That’s not really why it’s taken so long to build though is it .
The GAA have themselves to blame for this. All the planning issues were their own fault and if they had of done this properly it would have been built long ago. Now it’s costing twice as much but the GAA have up to this point refused to put more more money in than they originally where.

Also the fans are not ‘having a fit’ about going across the west link as you say. The NISC has said their position is that it should have been in a football stadium not a GAA stadium because where is the legacy for local football after the tournament.
The NISC also opposed the plan for a multisports stadium at the Maze. This is the law of unintended consequences in action. The NISC think the world revolves around their narrow minded nonsense. If they had backed a 40000 all seater at the Maze this discussion wouldn't be happening. But their bigotry held them back and now it's Andytown or nothing.

Yea because plonking a 40000 capacity stadium in basically the middle of nowhere would have been a super idea. Not to mention the pitch size needed for GAA. The Maze stadium was a non runner right from the start and was too big for local footballs needs not to mention rugbys needs. The business case didn’t stack up.
What should have happened was the IFA and Ulster Rugby using the money given to the 3 sports and building a 25000 capacity (which could have been easily expanded) stadium somewhere in Belfast. More than enough for each of their needs.
Even the business case the GAA have given for Casement shows the stadium at full capacity once a year. They seem to want it more for money making concerts.
Call it bigotry if you want but there’s a bit more to it than you seem to think but keep pedalling your myths and people will believe them.

So Old Trafford wasn't selected because of a leaky roof but this ground in Belfast was chosen.

People believe them because they're true. The only groups opposed to the Maze stadium were NISC and the DUP. The only people opposed to the Euros at Casement NISC and DUP.
Crying about post tournament legacy for football, if Casement isn't built the football legacy for NI is zero. If Casement Park is built a lot of local kids get to see Mbappe, Haaland, Hojland up close and personal in Belfast, if that doesn't inspire kids to kick a ball I don't know what will.

If they changed the name of the stadium to Carson Park, would that work?

Do you not think if it was only the DUP and NISC that was opposed to the Maze that it wouldn’t have been built? You obviously don’t know why it didn’t get built.
There needs to be a legacy in upgrading football facilities locally. You do know local footballclubs, like Casement, are still waiting on the sub regional money ring fenced for them 12years ago. The money in the last few years the Sinn Fein minister wouldn’t release because the Casement project was going to double in cost. This money needs to be released and more besides just, like Casement, to provide a real legacy for football facilities in this country. Casement needs built and will provide a great incentive in the GAA community but the football community needs that as well.
You like most on here are just looking at the big shiny new stadium but not looking at the back ground.
I’m no lover of the DUP but there is always more to it than just blaming them all the time. Look a bit deeper and you find lots of things.

What if we temporarily declare old Trafford to be in Northern Ireland

its a shame but I get why the UK Government won't fund it at the minute. With no work started there would be no time to get it finished, hold test events and signed off for Euro 2028 like their statement said. Plus the small matter of the cost of £400m and bound to increase.

People keep saying what about Windsor Park on twitter. Minimum requirements are 30K and Windsor Park has only been done up and surrounded by houses with no hope of upgrading from its 18,500 capacity.

It's not really disappointing for Euro 2028, they'll find another stadium somewhere (outside NI).

More a disappointment it won't host (gaelic) football and hurling matches. The Ulster football Championship final would sell out in no time, instead being held in rural Clones across the border in Monaghan.

Euro 2028 would be alright but it's just one tournament and either Ireland would likely be massacred!

It’s 4 years away. Are they saying they can’t build a stadium of 45k in 4 years?

Get it signed, get ground broke. Where there’s a will there’s a way

your problem there is you’ve only got one person watching the two people in hi-vis, watching where the work should be happening. you need at least three more people on big money to be watching the workers watching where the work should be happening.

and i’d know. i get paid vast amounts by the government to watch the men who watch the workmen, who are watching where the work should be happening

Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life.

Hardly a surprise. As soon as it was announced that Casement would be a host venue there was scepticism as to whether it would be ready in time.

Honestly such a bloody shame for Northern Ireland, soccer fans and those of us who love the GAA. But honestly, not in the least surprising, it is a complete logistical nightmare, very much lacking in local facilities like parking and the unspoken, given it's being held in West Belfast and you would have a Northern Irish fan base being apprehensive at the very minimum to go there.

Now it falls on the GAA to do something, the Island is filled with crumbling grounds, the players don't get a cent and it seems every spare cent is being pumped into Croke Park which is just a glorified home ground for Dublin. Pairc Ui Chaoimh was a complete shambles, simply because they insisted on building it in one of the most inaccessible parts of Cork City, maybe new ideas needs to be had for a Casement replacement at a different site.

Not a chance that could be built and open in 4 years in Ireland.

For a start where do these extra workers come from to do it? There's basically 100% employment in any aspect of building work at the moment across the north and south.

It's a shame it won't happen but take a look at the children's hospital in Dublin as an example of cost and time over runs and that's without the political and sectarian problems in the North.

If you take a look at the size of concerts Croke Park attracts and the limitations around those per year it's a pity someone hasn't used their heads to build something in Belfast. It would bring a hell of a lot of tourism to the city, something severely lacking compared to Dublin.

You’re probably right. I just find it incredibly frustrating that we can’t do it in 3-4 years. How long did it take to build the new grand central station in Belfast?

That's going on about 3/4 years and something like £300m cost too. Not sure when that finally completes? We were put off the train in Newry a couple weeks back and bused to Belfast.

Insane what building costs in money and time here when you compare it to projects in other countries.
