Uefa Youth League - Liverpool v Manchester United

Dunno about at club level but the Boateng brothers played for different countries, they met in the world cup after Kevin-Prince injured Ballack if I remember rightly.

Yes!

If this was the actual match day thread and the chances we missed today - there would have been absolute bloodbath.

A shame we won't get to play City in the next round but there's definitely a lot of positives, Chong is begging for a call up to the first team before season's end. I've been quietly impressed with Bohui whenever I've seen him play too, wonder if he'll get a chance in the first team at some point.

Only tuned in for the last 20 minutes, how were the first 70?

Doesn't Chong play mostly for the U18's? If so, even stepping up to the U19's he stands out as one of the better players. Surely he'll get some cup game time next season if he continues to progress.

Liverpool were on top for the first 30, after that it evened out a bit, but 2nd half onwards it's been all United. Adekanye and Chong a level above their team mates this game.

He's playing currently for the U23s, got promoted in January I think. I'd hope he gets some cup games at some point, think the first team experience could be good for him too.

Netherland's future is sorted in hands of Adekanye and Chong

The commentator is taking the piss here.

Uniteds final ball/end product let them down. Less said about the goalkeeping the better.

They have a few good prospects coming through, Kluivert is the big one but Daishawn Redan (I hope I've not butchered that) is meant to be really good too. I like De Ligt at Ajax, I was seriously impressed with him in the Europa League final.

Poor goalkeeping cost us really. Teams were about even over the 90. Thought Woodburn and Jones were Liverpool's best players whilst O'Conner and Chong were ours. Still feel we need more quality on the ball in the middle of the park. Really want to see this Traore lad a bit more because he looks to have the size and technical quality.

Yeah our midfield was probably the weakest part of the team today. Puigmal and Traore both come with big reputations so hopefully once they've bedded in we'll have a much stronger midfield.

That Hamilton guy who was in our FA cup squad had a poor game. Hadn't noticed he was on the pitch until he got challenged in the second half which resulted in a booking.

Another bad game for us. I can't belive there is no chemistry between those young players. It looks like they really don't understand eachother, how they move... Too much sloppy passes, really bad game for Angel Gomes, Chong missing sitters. No passion was shown today. Very well deserved win for Liverpool, they had us under control at almost every moment of the game.

Did you even watch the game? Looks like you've just seen the score and filled in the missing bits yourself.

They really didn't have us under control all that much. I thought it was quite an even game. Second half we we're definetly better. We've had more than enough chances to not get beat. Just didn't go out way today.
But I agree some players played poorly today.

I've watched the whole game on Yt. It's fair to say we couldn't make 10 consecutive passes in 2nd half. Couldn't create a single chance (lpool's goalie mistake can't count as created chance, Chong had to create chances for himself), Gomes had one of the worst games in this season (even comentator said that he still hasn't turn up). Midfield was really shocking, too much lost duels..

Regarding Gomes, he has to comes to terms with the increased physical level. A quiet game overall but he did make a number of tackles and put himself about a bit, took a nice free kick that Williams should have scored from, not sure what has happened to Williams mind, he looked amazing a few years back but looks pretty poor when I see him these days.

Wasnt he injured for quite some time?

There is a philosophy about young players, that their individual development is all that counts and that it is later that 'winning' as a team becomes paramount. Fergie did not think this applied as soon as players were in United's A Team as it was then. He believed that mental strength and the will to win, the belief that you always won playing in a United shirt was just as important or more so if you represented United in the FA Youth cup, Reserve league and beyond. He made sure that belief was instilled by the youth team managers/trainers.
It seems that belief has left the club with the person. United still have some talented young players, but as a group from U-18 to U-23 they do not have any drive to succeed as a team. They do not instinctively know how to win. Without this it will be just be the odd individual who makes the step up to first team level. Chong and O'Connor stand a chance from this lot. Gomes is talented but physically very weak and his speed isn't sufficient to overcome this weakness. In my humble opinion Greenwood is a far better bet in his sort of position.

Bohui was good today and has improved a lot over the last 18 months.

Woah, where did this come from? Did you watch the game? United played well for a large chunk of the game and the scoreline isn't reflective of the way the game played out.

Our U18's are top of the league, the U19's only play European competitions and the U23's are sitting bottom of their table. No idea where you got that they're bereft of a winning mentality?

The idea of playing a competitive game, is to win it, not lose it 2-0. If you lose it doesn't matter how you have played, you have lost and in cup competitions it means you don't play another one. Losing to Liverpool matters, whatever the team, but in a European competition it means more.
If this doesn't hurt these kids very deeply, they will never be United players.

You can tell we are desperately need of a good manager...Butt seems out of his depth even at this level.
Agree about butt, think he's doing a really good job as our head of youth, but hope he isnt anywhere near a dugout next season. Think we'v stumbled through this competion under him, playing some very poor football along the way. How he didnt replace barlow after an hour yesterday is beyond me, the lads a good player but he was having a shocker.

Does anybody know why mckenna hasnt had the 19's? It seems bizzare to me, he's worked with all the players in that 19's squad over the last 2 seasons, had them playing some beutiful football, he's a proven, high quality youth coach, and he seems to be the only coach/manager in the whole club who encourages attacking football. But yet he gets passed over for butt, who's got no coaching experience whatsoever.

For some reason they thought it would be too much of a workload for him and wanted him to concentrate on the u18s even though other u18s managers are managing both teams
