UEFA Conference League 2024/25

Feels weird when you play almost two different sides in competitions and when they're playing dross too. Hard to judge if they're any good or not. Suppose the main thing is keeping fit and tactically fresh in case they're needed during the PL campaign.

Our B team is several cuts above pretty much every team in this competition so there’s not much to gain really other than keeping players happy with minutes and seeing who can play themselves into contention for the PL lineups. The LW feels like a wide open spot, so Mudryk bagging 1 goal and 2 assists tonight is great for him.

I'm surprised how well Maresca is doing but I suppose that end of season form under Poch has helped too. Think you'll be alright this season and will likely win this.

As an aside well done TNS tonight.

Uefa mafia banned Ukrainian and belarussian opposite's flags in HJK-Minsk game. At least Var disallowed their added-time equaliser.

Whats the crack with bugger all fans at the Larne game?

You'd have thought it would have been rammed.
Probably only allowed season ticket holders of each club to go, so no locals (belfast ones) get to go and cause any bother.

4-0 up inside 25 mins vs a team called NOAH.

6 for Chelsea. This will probably end 10-0 or something

Exactly. They’re scoring for fun and we couldn’t hit a barn door with a banjo.
PAOK are a solid side defensively. They're second in the greek league. Having said that United should beat them. At least I hope so since I had the terrible idea of putting United in my Acca.

Drewsbury-Hall commits a foul. VAR have somehow decided it’s a penalty for Chelsea. Ref even went to the monitor to double check, and awards the penalty. Every angle I’ve seen shows Drewsbury-Hall committing the foul

Anyway it’s 8-0.

Thank you Manchester United for forcing us into the Conference League. I genuinely get more excited for pre season games than this.

It's only the conference league, but it's fecking amazing that Heidenheim have won every single international match of their club history. This series might end with these five wins as Chelsea comes next, but it's still impressive for a club that was basically a mid table side in the 2nd Bundesliga just two years ago

Don’t worry it’ll get more exciting once you reach the knockouts and face the likes of Alphabet FC, Pafos and Baka

Shamrock Rovers might just have enough points for the playoff /knockout round already. Good for them. Only 6 league phase games in this one and was a nice draw getting Larne and TNS.

Mind you, Chelsea likely to wreck their goal difference in the last game but anyone finishing on 7 points has to have a good chance. 1 more point nails it I feel.

Two Polish teams in top 3 is remarkable. It’s such a poorly stacked competition this year though.

It is. They may need to think about reinstating the relegation aspect of the prior tournaments. Essentially any PL team that ends up in this should win it unless a really big team in Italy, Spain or Germany have a horrific year.

Maybe give a place in this competition to the team that avoids relegation rather than the team that finishes 7th.

I actually like the lack of relegation this year. It’s a competition designed for smaller league to have something to be competitive in.

I would actually be in favor of removing all top 5 leagues from it and just having the others compete, Champions League and even Europa League have moved so far out of reach for the rest of Europe that we need Conference League to enjoy any meaningful European football.

Prior to its existence Poland would pretty much never have a team in Europe after the turn of year, and sometimes not even in October anymore. There are leagues who were even worse than this that now have 1 or 2 teams still playing in ECL. I actually like this.

Rode their luck a bit in the first half against 2nd bottom of the SPL Hearts but aye. Good achievement for them!

It would be hilarious if you don't win the comp.

They didn't really impress in any of their matches, but somehow in the end they won all of them. And they themselves are more worried about getting relegated from the Bundesliga than about the ECL anyway, always massively rotate for that and play mostly their "B-Team".

I think a team like Brighton or West Ham would be great in this competition. Look at how much it meant for West Ham when they won it, but it might be an idea to work out a way to exclude teams based on UEFA coefficient.

Chelsea are 8th, basically a top CL level team, the Armenian side we faced last night are 311th, Panathinaikos who we played the last round are 221st, our next 3 opponents are ranked 99th (Heidenheim), 141st (Astana) and 105th (Shamrock). Gent (48th) were the only top 50 club on our schedule, and they're basically a bottom Europa League level team, their only defeat so far was against us. If they found a way to exclude, say, the top 20 teams based on coefficients, it may be worth considering.

The Conference League would be great for Tottenham: a competition they might have a chance of winning.

Be honest. You know that they would bottle that as well. You just want to watch them fail in the most hilarious way.

Heidenheim in a way does not even have an UEFA coefficient of their own as it's the first time ever they are qualified for any international competition. It's just the points for the league that they had so far. I don't know to which other teams that applies, but I guess there are some. Having a club like Chelsea drop into the ECL is a bit unfortunate for the competition, in general it should have the potential for big clubs from small countries or midtable clubs without international (winning) experience to have an amazing season.

You can see why Newcastle fans were so gutted to miss out on this.

They'd have almost certainly have won it and ended the drought. It's still very funny we managed to beat City, win the cup and annoy Chelsea and Newcastle fans all at the same time

Sorry, you got me.

4th season into this and I'm still not convinced if we ever needed a conference league.

West Ham won it under Moyes so it was certainly winnable for Newcastle. Chelsea have no excuse for not winning this competition now.

They tried and they failed remember, Chelsea like City, Liverpool and a lesser extent United are wining clubs, Spurs, Newcastle and Villa need to win some silverware to prove they are wining clubs too, as good as they’ve all been and they are all three more consistent than us right now, if we had any final to play between any of those three as bad as we are, we’d expect to win and so would Arsenal who have won even less than us in terms of European trophies.

Well I think the answer is that we, as in PL teams, did not need it but it does serve a function for the smaller European Leagues. Where they would previously win their league title and then get smashed into oblivion in some UCL or UEL qualifier in August they now get to at least play some group fixtures during the regular season in a competition that gives them some TV money and the chance for their fans to enjoy winning some European matches. It is lopsided having teams from the top 5 leagues in there but on the flip side without them it would not get televised and the cash windfall needed by the smaller clubs would disappear.

To be fair it’s a bit unbalanced also because the teams from top 5 leagues that made it there this year are a bit underwhelming. You’d expect a team better than Heidenheim from Germany, and a team better than Betis from Spain. If it was instead Villarreal and Wolfsburg/Gladbach the perception would be slightly different (though still Chelsea are supposed to be miles ahead of either).

There is no problem with a European competition for more middling teams. Chelsea just ended up in there due to us winning the FA Cup and have also improved quite a bit over the summer after underperforming a lot compared to squad spend. As such they are making it look a bit silly.
