U23's Vs Everton (23rd October)

Bit of a nothing 1st half in terms of goalmouth action...

Pellistri had a clean but tame shot easily saved.

Rojo hit a lovely free-kick only denied by the post

I really like Rojo as a defender. It's just like Bailly he can be reckless. And like Bailly is injury prone.

0-0

I am new watching U23s... they don't like to use cards at this level, do they?

I like the look of Fernandez, has silky control. Not surprising coming from Madrid I guess.

Pellistri looking best and tidy, good control and movement. Looks at first glance a similar talent level to what we’re buying in the youth set up currently, i.e.,very promising.

I think the back 3 have been a bit wobbly but apart from that we've looked alright. I'd say Mejbri and Galbraith have been our best two, I think I prefer when he's playing as a CM to when he's more advanced. Pellistri started getting busier as the half went on. My first impressions is that his technique looks good and he's going to get fouled a lot in his time here.

When you look at some of the kids in these teams they are built like brick outhouses and are completely opposite to the type of player in their first teams.

He's a bit more reckless than Bailly in terms of his tackles, but less likely to make a mistake than Bailly and Jones. At least he was before the injuries really destroyed him in late 16/17 - he's barely played since then so no idea whether they've taken their toll.

United dominating the game first half, but not creating many chances. Rojo closest when hitting the post from a free kick just outside the box. Pellistri looking good. Excellent close control and you can see he has something extra. Fernandez and Williams good as well.

Ellis Simms looks like he's in his early 30s, he's absolutely enormous.

How good is Galbraith under press? he looks good but Everton has given him all the space this game.

Galbraith will make it in the PL 100%, such a tidy player. Everton playing with everyone behind the ball is unsurprisingly frustrating us.
He looks very polished for someone his age, which is quite rare for a CM. If you dropped any of this team into the first team I think he'd probably look most comfortable.

He does. He needs to change his boots the number of times he has slipped. Actually it might be better if he doesn't as they were saying he is prolific.
He outscored Greenwood which should tell you everything you need to know about his goalscoring capabilities.

That's good then. Isn't there also someone in the team who is in his mid 20's and really should be playing elsewhere if he can't get in the Everton first team squad.

Been thinking this throughout the first half. With Galbraith, Megbri, Garner and Levitt we really do seem to have some serious talent coming through the academy.

Brutal two footer from the Everton number 5. Thought he’d done a Pogatetz on Pellistri for a moment. Weird the way ref’s seem so determined to keep their cards in their pocket at this level. Surely the priority should be keeping the players safe, when the result doesn’t really matter?

We've been putting some serious work into our academy for a good few years now, I think it's definitely showing. There's far less squad fillers, pretty much every starting 11 player is quite talented whereas in the past there was a huge gap between the good players and the squad fillers.
It actually tells me hes a bit of a flat track bully.
He was about a head taller than his opponents to be fair, he definitely knows where the back of the net is though.

Hugill has been so impressive but he really doesn’t look like a footballer

First sight of Pellistri taking it past someone, nice.

Pellistri is a silky, movement kind of winger. He’s not particularly fast. I can see where the David Silva comparisons come from (when Silva was younger). He’s got that same shoulder drop, low centre of gravity thing going on. Still very early days

My guess is we're going to be doing something like this:

Mastny
Rojo - Fish - Mengi
Williams - Galbraith - Mejbri - Fernandez
Shoretire
Elanga - Pellistri

It's a funny one.
not that funny considered is the same formation we used with the first team on our last outing

Yeah, that's what I'm seeing as well. Moves very much like David Silva.

His dribbling reminds me of Januzaj's.

so he's at least 2 or 3 years away from 1st XI? Do you think he might get a U23 run out this season?
Rojo shouldn't be playing U23s again. Mengi is officially in 1st team squad and Di'Shon Bernard is on loan. Fish debuted for U23s aged 16 last season. But Willy is only just turned 16. Despite being a giant he's officially our youngest U18. So yes I expect Willy to debut this season. But maybe not this year. Then again - my opinion is worthless.

what the h is Mastny doing there - miracle that they didnt score again

Ouch, hope both are OK.

Btw, wtf is the Everton FWD thinking? He took like 5 extra touches before shooting and he litturary gave B. Williams time to clear the ball.
