U21s: Barnsley vs Manchester United (EFL Trophy)

That Barley goalscorer is the first player of Tamil descent to play professional football in the UK. Pretty cool

Amass getting blamed for a part in the goal when he was providing width for the GK on the opposite side.

That was Devaney. Poor pass but didn't get much help either.
Worse then. Also who I thought it was originally but the commentator didnt give a name so just went with who had been named here. He had the chance to clear it then turned back on himself and then played an inaccurate pass with his strong foot

Ennis and Collyer our best players so far in my opinion.

The former just turned outside the box and played a short pass to Wheatley, who did well to get a shot off but it’s straight down the keeper.

37’

2-0. Wheatley’s turn to play back a poor pass and it’s a very similar goal to the first one.

10'

1-0 Barnsley. Devaney plays a sloppy pass under pressure and the hosts capitalize with an easy goal.
That's a shame. Bad start for the experiment tactic of 'letting the opposition management staff pick one of their sons to play for us'. Not sure it'll take off.

I used to watch every U21 game but I just fell out of love with them. They're just awful and keep making the same mistakes.

Hmm.

It was a tough group we were drawn into on paper. All teams that'll be expecting to be challenging for promotion - Barnsley and Huddersfield currently yo-yo clubs between championship and league one.

But I was more hopeful when I saw the line ups. Looks like Barnsley made plenty of changes, and we've picked a team that's stronger than most of our U21 sides will likely be this season, with Heaton, Amass, Collyer and Wheatley in it.

Where's the disconnect between u18's to u21's? We usually have good u18's, is it because they tend to go on loan younger, instead of playing for the u21's?

Collyer has been decent in some moves and Ennis has skipped away from the left back several times but not picked the right cross or shot. Wheatley had one good turn and shot. Thats about it from that half

If you give the ball away time and time again defensively .... you are not playing well
We've given it away 3 times and 2 turned into goals. You can't really have that kind of energy for youth teams, this is where they are meant to make mistakes. We've created chances and Collyer looks well in midfield.

Interesting decision by the club not to post any updates on social media. Not even the starting lineup.

I agree Collyer has looked good - and Ennis creates a lot, but his decison-making is questionable at best. But defensively we have been awful....and we gave the ball away a lot more than 3 times - but not all of them ended up with big chances or goals for Barnsley

Yes, a worryingly dismissive start to the season in terms of the lack of coverage.

You can accept some of the games they aren't allowed to show live - but they could and should be acknowledging they're taking place a lot more with team line ups, updates, match reports, highlights coverage, etc.

We haven't given away a tonne of shots so defensively we haven't been awful we've made hilarious mistakes that caused both goals. Individual errors.

Does this team ever cross the ball? A few times they’ve been in position to do so and have chosen to pass short inside and across.

Just out of curiosity - if gifting the opposition 2 goals - almost 3 isn't the definition of being defensively awful - what is ?

Are we looking like creating anything in the second half? There doesn't seem to be much change in the shots on target stats for either team.

Looking better 2nd half, not creating anything clear cut though.

Wheatley had a good shot blocked, thats about it.

They are not a good side - so we could score 2 goals.....but it's not like we are creating lots of chances

Mather and Ogunneye off - both have been.....poor if I am nice. Williams and Nolan on

Finally - great attacking play and 2-1 Ennis scored. Nice one-touch play and Nolan with a cut back to Ennis who scored from 13-14 yards
