Tyrone Mings - 26.5m?

He barely played for Wolves in last 18 months. Started a few games for us but Axel-Mings was very much our first choice. Think Wolves were just happy to get him off their books. From what I've seen I think he's got more potential of making career at left back than CB.

I don't think I'd recognise him in the street to be honest, let alone tell you much about him, as I think he started about 10 games for us.

We had an excellent batch of kids, including Ibe, that banked us quite a bit in sell ons. All to just about keep our heads above water you understand, not to give us any money to play with!
Unfortunately, because the Premier league douchebag clubs voted to basically blackmail all the lower league clubs with a few extra crumbs each season, top clubs can pick up lower league kids before a certain age for buttons - so a lot of these sell on deals are now impossible.

If I read one more person crying about possible fees for Maguire etc after this ! A bang average player who probably hasn't even played 20 PL games ( I'm guessing ) for that sort of fee is mental .

In fairness, 50-55m more is still huge!

The English market makes no sense. In fact scrap that. The entire transfer market makes no sense

The thing a lot us find hilarious/shocking, is that there's a premium on English players, as if they're some amazing commodity. As if it's Spanish midfielders from that golden period where their depth was immense.

The English pool has never been crapper in quality. Never. Yet the prices have never been higher. Yes, you have to have quotas etc, but you could just buy some filler for the squad.

Reckon we could get £20m for Jones.
Logic dictates that we should, but nothing about Jones has ever operated in that stratosphere. He’ll probably leave on a free after his second testimonial.

At this rate squad players are going to go for £40-50 million in 2-3 years. Club valuations are absolutely bonkers right now

Apparently he was good for him and 26m really isn't all that much these days with the amount of TV money every club gets. If he helps them avoid the drop, he'll be well worth it for them. I don't understand why do transfer fees still cause such disbelief these days.

I think he is value at the price actually. He was unbelievably impressive at Ipswich so much so I thought Chelsea were going to snap him up (his Dad is a scout at Chelsea)

It didn't work at Bournemouth but had that terrible injury to start his career there and maybe just needed a reset after a big move starting in the worst way.

I could see Villa making a profit on him in a couple of years if they wanted to.

He was very good at Ipswich before he went to Bournemouth. Starred there mainly at LB but also had the ability to cover CB. Didn't really do well at Bournemouth due to injuries and Howe having a lack of faith in new signings. He was brilliant at Villa last season at CB. I think he's a very good player and yes £26m might be a bit on the expensive side but he will do well for them and be a big figure in their defence if they find themselves a decent enough partner.

Not quite how it worked. He was signed for us as a left back alternate to Daniels but did his major injury in his first game (the same match that also ruined Gradel's knee...). Since then he's been seen as a centre back. Maybe that was always the long-term plan and they decided to accelerate it when the injury happened or whether something in his recovery from the injury meant there was a recommendation to try and reduce all the twisting you would get as a full back we don't know but he never once played again at left back for us again, even when we were desperate for anyone through injuries and suspension. Therefore, I'm inclined to believe the change was somehow related to his injury and he can't be viewed as a viable left back again.

After the injury he had to wait for his chance and when he came in he looked excellent at CB in a short run of games. Truly excellent. However, that was brought to a halt by a ban for the Zlatan incident and that took us through to the end of that season.

That summer we signed Ake and I believe it was an opportunistic move rather than a planned one. Sometimes when a quality player becomes available you just have to go for him even if his position isn't your priority at that moment in time. Especially when you're lower down the pecking order like us. Whilst Ake is versatile, having played left back the previous season on loan for Watford and declaring himself he was best as a defensive CM, it became immediately apparent his best role was as a CB. Specifically on the left side of the CB pairing, exactly where Mings would play.

That season Ake won our player of the season and so Mings didn't get a look in, despite being one of the few players to come out with credit from our dire FA Cup game. Since then that has been his problem. Ake has consistently been one of our best two players and he's playing exactly where Mings should be playing. It never seemed a realistic option to pair them since it would leave us too unbalanced at CB. Finally last season there was a period when it looked like he would get a run of a few games but he picked up a niggle which seemed to cause some frustration at the club.

After that there were a few on the line social media posts from him towards the end of last calendar year and it was clear he wasn't happy. Which is fair enough as he'd been fit for a while now, unfortunately timed niggle aside, and hadn't got a look-in because his place in the team was blocked by a better player. So he went to Villa on loan and most people assumed it was with a view to proving to people he was fit so he could get a permanent move somewhere in the summer. There was this image that he was a sicknote when in reality after the big injury it was mainly that he just couldn't get into the team because of Ake.

The general opinion of the fans at AFCB is that he's a really good player. Considering the number of appearances he made at the club I think we've done well to get that fee for him but judging the quality we saw from him when he did actually play I think Villa have a PL defender on their hands and so it isn't really overpaying considering the prices out there in the market. He'll have bad games but then he isn't Baresi so you have to accept that. He'll have enough good ones to not be the weak point that would stop Villa from staying up.

Sometimes a player is good enough for your club but somehow seems to miss out through an unfortunate series of coincidences. That was Mings with us. If he was still with us and Ake was sold tomorrow I'd have been perfectly happy with him as the replacement. Put it like that.

23 games in 4 years for Bournemouth. Sold for £26million. Crazy. The fees thrown around for players is ridiculous

He actually played a lot more ball than that and if you consider Newcastle want 30 million plus for longstaff and his 8/9 games, we just paid 50 million plus for a kid who played one season in Epl.

The thing I've notice in this thread is "money" we can hardly talk given what we hand out and let face reality, its just going to get higher and higher as if you're the selling club, you hold the cards and want top dollar.

The Villa fans I know have lost their beans over this guy signing. They seem to think he's amazing.

He was albeit at championship level. He came in at a time when we'd just conceded 3 goals at Wigan (at a time when Wigan were barely scoring a goal in any game) and also just drawn 2-2 at home to Hull and QPR. Difficult to score against in first five months of the season we weren't.

In all his games I think we only conceded more than one goal twice. I think he's the best aerial dominant CB we've had since Martin Laursen and he's good on the ball aswell. Just need to partner him up with someone experienced at the top level and he will be fine.

Defence is coming together now as we're about to sign Tom Heaton from Burnley for 7m and he's shown over last few years he's a pretty good keeper at prem level.

It's a ton of money for him at 26 years old, but left-sided center backs seem to be tough to find as most teams end up playing a right-sided guy there, though to be honest I have no real sense of how much it matters. Van Gaal cared a lot about it, but then again everyone thought right-sided goalscoring wingers were better off on the right until what, 10 years ago?

The hate for the guy comes from his episode with Zlatan which is fair. But he’s a good defender. The fee is on the higher side maybe but isn’t like it would break the bank for any teams playing in PL.

It's a player they know who's also got his career back on track with them last season after some horrible injuries at Bournemouth.

From Aston Villa's POV they're getting a defender that they know will improve them. How much of a gamble can you take really on defenders these days, especially considering you're a newly promoted side who's going to face a long season of trying to stay up.

Fee doesn't sound more crazy than other transfers with that in mind.

Which could be very good news for United, considering the number of squad players that need to be shown the exit door.
