Yes, but his history isn't exactly clean is it.

It isn't but Barca won't care about it all that much, other than the risk of him missing games. There are no morals in football - ability is what matters.

He's a great player, regardless of the baggage and Barca need success given last year. The fact that they moved quickly, rather than letting Liverpool sweat after the bite and the ban suggests other clubs were waiting to pounce. They clearly really want him.

Barca have an annoying habit of getting players cheaply. They dont seem to overpay to often. Also they are the only bidders.

It's one thing buying from other Spanish clubs or contracts running down - totally different here on a player with a long contract, undoubtedly some kind of fee related clause and a club who'd gladly keep him.

Anyway - look at what they paid for Ibrahimovic and Neymar - huge sums, once the truth came out about the latter.

Liverpool hold significant cards here and know that Barca have money and want the player.

Liverpool don't seem like a push over either. Supposedly Arsenal met a "release fee" of some kind last summer but they just refused to sell, knowing Arsenal were unlikely to pursue messy legal avenues.

Significant cards? What, like having to face their main player not being able to play until November or so?
Of him 100% wanting to leave?

Of Barcelona already having Messi and Neymar?

I'd say this will be the usual Barcelona getting player under market value scenario

As I said - He's just signed a new contract and they'd gladly keep him. He missed games last year and they didn't sell. He's the only world class player they have.

If Barca weren't bothered why are they busting a gut to get the deal done? Why not let Liverpool wait over the summer and drive the fee down? Suggests to me he's a key player for them - almost certainly agreed with the player months ago - and that they're worried another club, perhaps Real Madrid in particular might push to front of the queue with a bigger offer.

When is the appeal for their transfer embargo to be decided, perhaps they're moving quickly while they have the chance?

Spunking 20 odd million on another left back seems like a good use of money.

He's an outstanding prospect. We really need one more LB now that Evra is on his way out.

Should have kept Büttner as a backup. Now we have to spend another 20 million on a left back while we have still other priorities. fecking great.

Meh, let the cash flow is what I say.

Yeah but it's unusual to take on two top talents for a spot in the team that you look to keep pretty constant. I agree we need cover but could probably use a more experienced player who's happy to be a back up far more. Tbf though it just says interest so who knows.

I'd have rather spent £20m on Rodriguez than £30m on Shaw. I honestly don't think we should be buying both as it'll probably end up doing more harm than good to their respective careers.

Shaw has an injury history(albeit it seems past him now) as does Rafael. Ricardo Rodriguez can apparently play very well on the right too. Perhaps it's expected that he'll get plenty of games between either side.

Though it seems like Varela should be getting a shot now, should have had one last year, but maybe it wasn't right after the stuff with his parents. Or maybe it was another in a long line of Moyes feck ups.

The Ducker piece:

Manchester United are considering Ricardo Rodríguez, the Wolfsburg and Switzerland left back, as a replacement for Patrice Evra, with the Frenchman on the verge of joining Juventus.

Evra, 33, is likely to complete a move to the Italian champions within 72 hours, with United resigned to losing the defender. Juventus are thought to have bid around £1.5 million for Evra, who has been offered a two-year contract in Turin, although United are holding out for about £2 million.

Although Evra, who signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford in May, would be happy to remain at United, his wife, Sandra, is eager to leave Manchester and the club are loath to stand in his way given his eight and a half years at the club.

United signed Luke Shaw, the England left back, from Southampton in a £28 million deal last month, but with Fábio Da Silva having moved to Cardiff City in January and Alexander Büttner recently joining Dynamo Moscow, Evra’s impending departure will necessitate the arrival of another left back.

Rodriguez is believed to be a leading candidate to replace Evra. The 21-year-old, who joined Wolfsburg from Zurich in 2012, played in all four of Switzerland’s games at the World Cup finals in Brazil.

Evra joined United from Monaco in January 2006 and overcame a poor start to establish himself as an integral figure in the defence, helping the club to win five Barclays Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2007-08.

Evra’s imminent exit will be keenly felt and follows the departures at the end of last season of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, two other long standing bedrocks of the defence.

Although Shaw is expected to become the first choice left back under Louis van Gaal, the new United manager, Evra’s experience, strength of character and popularity in the dressing room are greatly valued and will be sorely missed. Van Gaal had also hoped Evra would help to smooth Shaw’s transition.

If Rodriguez follows Shaw to Old Trafford, it will leave United with two young and inexperienced left backs.

United are continuing to monitor developments surrounding Arturo Vidal, although they have so far balked at Juventus’s €45 million (£36 million) starting price for the Chile midfielder.

How many games has Rodriguez actually played as RB for Wolfsburg?

If Ricardo signs, I expect van Gaal will play him as a winger, not as competition for Shaw which would be stupid.

Luke Shaw was injured quite a bit at Southampton. I wouldn't complain if we signed Rodriguez.

He played 38 matches last year, he was hardly injured at all.

If anyone will be pushed forward I think it will be Rodriguez who is supposedly better going forward. Either that or we'll see if either of them can play left centre half. If LVG tried it with Bruno Martins he can try it with anyone.

As I understood it its likely to be after this summer. Although I could be wrong.

Even if that is the case - it surely plays into the selling clubs hands anyway.

To be fair, we have at least 40 games to play. More like 50. That would be just 20 games for each player playing as a left back. Besides of that I've seen Rodriguez already playing as a left winger and at centre midfield and I guess Shaw can be used as a winger aswell and maybe as a centre back. So I don't think either would hinder the developement of the other too much, at least for the first few years.

You don't spend £20m to make your £30m signing feel unsettled.

Take that money and add it on top of an offer for Vidal. Then get Daley Blind for cover.

You would never play Shaw at centreback, he's about a foot short for that.

It depends entirely on where the pair see their best position. If it's left back in both cases then it doesn't matter where you play them, they'll be pissed off. Ricardo would only make sense if he sees himself as a midfielder or winger who's been shoe-horned in to left back.

Really? He seemed to be picking up knocks quite often. Maybe I imagined it.

Martins-Indi is a centre back?
