We definitely need a RB. Rafael cannot be relied upon.

We have Vermilj, Varela and Janko that are all trying to break into the team with Jones, Smalling and Valencia out of the first team who can fit in aswell. We don't need another RB.

Luke Shaw is only 18. Maybe there's plans to switch him to right back in the reverse of when we signed Dennis Irwin and then Paul Parker the season after.

Rodriguez definitely has the ability to play as a winger, he is very strong offensively and has a brilliant cross on him. Not sure I'd want him now we have Shaw, though.

No Vidal news yet. What a waste of this thread last few pages because of the Liverpool kit.

From here it seems Rodriguiez is great going forwards, maybe we're getting the new Bale. Or not.

We've had quite enough of Jones, Smalling and Valencia "doing a job" at RB. It's shite. And it's laughable to suggest the likes of Vermilj as PL ready.
Of course we need a RB. Rafael is too fragile.

 we're not signing Rodriguez. He would have been a good signing instead of Shaw though

Yes it is.

He is willing, and good at getting forward, but given his 1 assist and 0 goals, his output at that end is what needs most work.
Whether you think it is or not is up to you. But we won't be signing a young promising left back for £30m then play him at CB when he's never played there. It doesn't make any sense.

Probably more likely than United signing a £30m 18 year old left back just to play him out of position, or spending £50m this summer on 2 players for the same role, is that 'Waz-online.de', where this story originated, have simply made it up.

Shaw's best asset isn't even his defending. I can't see him playing at CB. Doesn't make sense.

It is right now along with his ability to carry the ball from defence to upfield above.

He is very good in 1 to 1 defending in fact. His weakness right now is positionally defending wise and aerially. I'd say he is better 1 on 1 defender than Rodriguez who can get skinned as he did vs Argentina on 2/3 occasions.

Rodriguez is not as good a athelete as Shaw but he has a better cross in attack and better in the air.

They both could work together but would be strange as 2 LB combination on one wing rarely works.

Or maybe the club would see one of them developing like a Bale ? Dunno, i doubt this rumor is true considering costs of Rodriguez. Makes little sense.

For around 10m euros apparently.

Unless they're going to move Alaba to midfield or play either one of them somewhere else other than LB, I'm not sure this makes much sense.

There is a huge difference between playing on the edges of a centre back 3 and playing in a pairing. I am pretty certain you know this already. He probably will play as a left back and we probably won't sign Rodriguez. But the way he would be asked to play the LCB role would not be as completely foreign to him as some are suggesting.

He's brilliant, but there's really no reason to have both him and Shaw. It'd be crazy.

You can guarantee Shaw will never get injured or have a bad game? With Evra going it would be good to have the right kind of back up for Shaw. Even if Evra is staying, it would be good to have another quality LB.

Exactly

You can't have a back up who has world class potential and isn't far off right now, we'd just be stunting his growth or perhaps both of them if we chose to rotate. Not at left-back you can't.

But long term wise, one of them will end up being an overly expensive insurance.

Hmm....they wrapped that up pretty quietly.

Wonder if they plan to use him as a Left back where his height could be a issue or as a Left Winger where he didn't stand out before.

The likes of Real Madrid, Barca, Bayern, City, Chelsea have two or more quality players for each position, we need that too. Also it will give Shaw some much needed competition so that he doesn't become complacent.

Speaking of having 2 young good quality Left backs with potential, Bayern went and bought Bernat while having Alaba.

Cheaper though ofcourse.

I'm not concerned about "stunting his growth". I'm only concerned about what United need. If used properly, his value should increase and could be sold on later at a profit if he's not happy with the arrangement.

Apart from Madrid at left back I don't see any other similar cases.

Rodriguez is better than Shaw at this time. How can he be his backup?

Nice headache for the new manager. SAF had similar 'headaches' when he had two or three good players competing for one position.

Rodriguez won't exactly come cheap right now and neither was Shaw Cheap.

But it's in the best interest of United to have Shaw reaching his full potential and having a good relationship with the rest of the defense. Rodriguez is far too good to sit on the bench all the time, and unnecessarily giving him game time to try and keep him happy would stunt Shaw too.

But Rodriguez is better than Shaw so why would we sign him to be back up? We don't need two young, quality left backs who have bags of potential. It's stupid.

If indeed United are interested in buying Rodriguez then I assume the new manager will know what he's doing. And lets face it, van Gaal has managed to get the so-called one of the worst Netherland team's ever into the semis, then I BELIEVE IN LvG!
