Not a shock, really. We've had different managers, we've had different coaching staffs. It's the fitness staff that's stayed the same for the past few years and three regimes...

Well I don't think we'll spend over £100 million in January, but I do think we'll see a centre-back and another midfielder signed.
Hummels and Strootman could cost around £80m IMO. I can see another defender coming in as well which would push us over the £100m mark.

Yeah but we won't be signing Hummels, certainly not in January anyway. And Roma have ruled out selling Strootman. I reckon we'll bring in Vlaar.

Ya true. However, if we're a bit off fourth come January, the Glazers might be willing to pay over the odds (more than our usual) to push for fourth.

There's no defender apart from Hummels to spunk a load of cash on. If we're spending big, it'll probably be in other, irrelevant positions.

We need to find a Diamond in the rough, it's about time our scouts came good.

You'll have to hold of the cafe bitching that we should only be buying established players.

Don't think it's possible in january but we'll spend another huge amount during the summer.

Wouldnt put it past us spending big on Laporte at Bilbao. We seem to like to give them lots of money and he's closer to being one of the best in his position than Ander was. Probably the 2nd best young CB after Varane

He's 30 (5 years older than Hummels). Would make so sense spending big on him.
He's experienced, a fantastic leader and a brilliant defender, one I feel is slightly underrated at times. He is everything we don't have at the moment. He held Brazil together defensively in the summer.
Throw £30m at PSG and see if they take it to help them with FFP. They'd still have Luiz and Marquinhos so they might be tempted to cash in on Silva.

It's harder these days, though. We do kind of need a ready-made player as those sorts of players really do need time, they never hit the ground running. You only have to look at Vidic, Evra, even Kompany for City.

I'm a big fan, but he is a left footed CB, which is where we have signed Rojo for. It's a tough call to make, but we'd then be needing to rely on Jones to stay fit if we were to sign him. Do agree he's probably the biggest youth talent out there.

Thiago Silva.
He's a top player at a good age, but he has it pretty comfortable at PSG. They've a plethora of his fellow national teammates, he's the main man (alongside Ibrahimovic) and is probably earning as much money as we could offer. Unless PSG wanted rid, I can't see him going anywhere.

It's a long shot but we should try imo. PSG could want rid if they got a significant sum to help them buy somebody else. Just a bit of speculation.

I agree that there's a dearth of top quality centre backs available (if that's what you are saying). But there are a handful out there who I think would immediately improve us that could realistically be bought. Excluding Hummels, who is the no.1 target:

Silva (he's 30, PSG May cash in)
Marquinhos (they were willing to sell in the summer)
Vertonghen (not first choice under pochettino, rumors of a rift. Hugely under rated. Would excel here I think)
Vlaar (not top drawer but still experienced and a leader. Has worked v.well with LVG)
Chiellini (he's been a monster for years. 29. Juve will sell players for the right bid)
Varane (best cb in the world in 3-4 years potentially. Already magnificent. Not first choice at real).
Subotic (Vidic light)
Godin (had a great season and wc. Close to Bayern move in august)

We need a reliable, quality partner for Jones. LVG is a system man. I don't think we need a star name at the back, but we do need someone who will fit in, be reliable, has the essential qualities and is a natural leader.

Phil Jones was hailed as future England captain, a world class centre back in the making and potentially United's best ever player by Lord tipsy of Ferg (lol), but in all seriousness every top club was after this lad. He has had some immense displays for us, has accumulated a lot of experience already and is only 22. It's the injuries so far that are holding him back. I am very hopeful on this front though because I think lvg's methodical approach to fitness and training will eliminate most of those problems. Under Van Gaal's influence I expect to see Rafael, Jones and Shaw to form 3/4's of an intimidating back 4. If you can slot Hummels in there, or one player from the list above, we'll be golden.

Neither Smalling nor Evans has the all round quality in every category that Jones has but both have far more quality than many give them credit for; and if they can stay fit they will forge excellent careers for themselves somewhere. One of them for sure will be doing it away from OT next season.

Maybe Simeone has an Argie crush on Rojo and we can do Rojo + 6-8 million for Godin.

More likely, I think Jones ends up playing well, one of Evans or Smalling goes to another Prem side (probably Smalling as Evans can go play both sides and seems like more of a possession player and is probably worth less in the transfer market) and we buy a left-footed backup for closer to Blind money than Herrera money, like Indi Martins, Ogbonna or Vertonghen, giving us this depth chart:

LCB - Rojo, NewBackup, Evans, Blackett (?)
RCB - Jones, Evans, Mcnair/Thorpe/Keane

Godin and Thiago Silva are getting on and are expensive but to a degree we may need to be in the short term business right now.

Varane has signed a big new contract with Real but of the other younger options I really like what I've seen of Marquinhos.

Silva (he's 30, PSG May cash in)
Already responded. https://www.redcafe.net/threads/twitter-discussion-2014-15.395354/page-181#post-16527398
Marquinhos (they were willing to sell in the summer)
Because he isn't very good, his progression/development at PSG has been very poor since he has left Roma. He's a very young, weak, developing CB. He'll find it very hard in the Premier League.
Vertonghen (not first choice under pochettino, rumors of a rift. Hugely under rated. Would excel here I think)
Left footed and would play LCB, which is where we have signed £16m Marcos Rojo for. Bit silly to buy him for another £25m+.
Vlaar (not top drawer but still experienced and a leader. Has worked v.well with LVG)
Uhh, I don't think so. He's a midtable defender. Sure, he has leadership and captain qualities, but at Manchester United, where the standards are so, so much higher, I'm not sure he'd cut it.
Chiellini (he's been a monster for years. 29. Juve will sell players for the right bid)
Another LCB, and Juventus wouldn't sell, nor would he leave.
Varane (best cb in the world in 3-4 years potentially. Already magnificent. Not first choice at real).
Just signed a new 6 year contract at Madrid. Good luck with that.
Subotic (Vidic light)
Do the Vidic comparisons come from the fact he's solely Serbian? Because he's not very much like him at all. Came off the back of a very heavy injury last season. Is he even still first choice these days? Sokratis' season last year was a lot better than any Subotic has had at Dortmund.
Godin (had a great season and wc. Close to Bayern move in august)
I'm a fan of Godin, but he'd be a transfer more dependent on where we and Atletico end.

I also don't think Jones will/should be our first choice candidate for CB, nor should we build the back-line around him so I'll leave that part.

Would obviously drive the price up if Ronaldo was at the club.

I'm not convinced it would be by that much seeing as it would be a long term acquisition and Ronaldo only has a certain shelf life. However our sudden change to being a Galactico club would certainly make sense.

If a sugar daddy bought us out, they'd be fully aware that they'd be buying one of 3 clubs (The other two will never be available) who can outspend pretty much anyone else when the FFP is in full force.

I doubt the new buyers would see it that way. They would more likely see it as pure asset valuation - the best, most famous player in the world being at the biggest club.

Ashley Young isn't even making the bench these days, not surprising.. Van Gaal like him as a backup WB and that's it..
