TV series that were canceled too soon

F'kin Deadwood is the worst by a long shot.

An absolute travesty that boggles the mind. I'd have funded it myself if I'd won the Euromillions last week.

Some good ones in here.

Firefly and Studio 60 leap straight out. Just started season 2 of Deadwood and struggling to find a reason why they should have cancelled it so far!

Someone mentioned Brotherhood on the 1st page. Not seen it yet and was thinking about getting the boxset. Didn't realise it had been cancelled though. Does this leave the story hanging, or did they tie everything up like in Studio 60?

This. Aaron Sorkin does 30 Rock. Great vehicle for Matthew Perry as well. American TV Drama so much better than ours it can even afford to cancel shows that are too well written for people to watch.

Unfortunately it was just a bit too well written for the generic American public

The problem is some shows are just too smart for the average American household or its just not what the American public want to watch....

Stuff like "My Dad Says" and "Mike and Molly" get picked up, but stuff like Arrested Development doesnt get enough viewers and gets canceled.
Really annoying..
The American public would much rather watch stuff like Jersey Shore and America's Next Top Model, and Bachelor...

I can't state how much I love Sorkin's work after watching The West Wing, TWICE..lol...(not yet seen The Social Network though)..

I have actually completed a whole season of Sports Night last 2-3 days, not a bad show, a good past time, but definitely nowhere close to West Wing etc...

One thing I have noticed about Sorkin is his willingness to use the same actors quite often..
Felecity Huffman, Lisa Edelstein and Teri Polo were there in both Sports Night and The West Wing..
Bradley Whitford, Timothy Busfield, Mathew Perry, and Allison Janey have appeared in both West Wing and Studio 60..

Still really disappointed that Studio 60 was canceled. I only just saw the first season 2 weeks ago, and was so annoyed to think a show of that quality was not picked up for more seasons. It wasn't as good as The West Wing, but was still a quality show which is so much better than much of the shit that is on the tele nowadays.
Studio 60 mainly got canceled cause it didn't appeal to the lowest common denominator, ironically that was one of the Studio 60s strongest messages about tv shows currently on the tele being dummed down to cater to corporate needs. Something tells me if the show had been on HBO or Showtime, it wouldn't have been canceled...

Unfortunately it isnt like that though is it...

That's what I was trying to say basically..

Exactly. It would almost be funny if it wasn't so annoying. The first episode dealt with a Network-esque rant about that very thing (well, not even Network-esque in truth, it was basically ripped)...

EDIT: First 10 minutes of Ep 1. Network scene starts at 6.20. Class

Sorkin is a fantastic writer, one of the few who can write an hours worth of material where almost nothing significant can happen but you're hooked...I heard once that the reason all his shows feature long walking shots is because he's such a crack head he can't sit still so they developed this style to keep him from cracking out.

Never seen Sports Night tbf...probably should.

"The Inside"

Dark series, about a police unit tracking deranged and really violent crime offenders.

I liked it because there isn't really anything this side of "dark" out there, but was cancelled after only 7 or so episodes. They could have at least finished season 1! :(

Peter Coyote was quite good as the lead aswell.

Heroes. It was getting shit but was building to a point where it could turn around.
It was shit every season after the first and just never seemed like coming back anywhere close to it's original standard.
Stuff like "My Dad Says" and "Mike and Molly" get picked up, but stuff like Arrested Development doesnt get enough viewers and gets canceled.

.

It's been decent till now. Something to pass the time and it's getting very good ratings so guess it'll stay on.

Shit My Dad Says is quite rubbish.

It wasn't too well-written, it just ran out of ideas. The West Wing did well enough despite being "too well-written", no? The scope of Studio 60 was too narrow to allow any real branching out of the storylines and it therefore supressed any genuinely interesting plot developments by virtue of its limited setting. After one season they'd even begun to repeat themselves.

And on the note of the opening post: Firefly. Firefly, Firefly, Firefly.

Some good shouts already in this thread. Firefly was rubbish but it was mighty entertaining rubbish, a bit like Chuck is.

One that hasn't been mentioned is American Gothic.

Oh and I'm not sure if it was cancelled or just finished but Black Books had much more life in it.

The Office doesn't count really since they never wanted to make more than two seasons. So it wasn't cancelled afaik.

i love the Office US version, i actually found it funnier than the UK version in the end. I dont really understand though why people compare the versions, you can't, the characters only loosely the same

Prospects (1986) (Gary Olsen),(Brian Bovell) One series canceled due to a copyright dispute.

carnivale Still wondering what happened, heard it was due to the 4m an episode.

Generation Kill a follow up would be really good.

These weren't cancelled but clearly should've continued for a season or two more:

Blackadder
Faulty Towers
The Office.

Early Doors.... only had two series, and strangely for a show written by Craig Cash, was shoved into a Tuesday night slot on BBC2. It was a brilliant show though, far better than Royle Family imo.
