Music Tupac Shakur

I appreciate this is all subjective, but I'm really not a fan of Pac's flow and is probably the chief reason why I never rated him highly.

I agree with what others have said in that his voice is able to capture a range of emotions that listeners can really feel, but his flow is just so jarring for me that it takes me out of the moment when listening to some of his tracks. You compare that to Biggie and his voice and cadence just meld with a beat, to the point they seem inseparable from one another. That's true skill IMO.

He was a born musical genius, like Kurt Cobain, that just had that power of connecting with people through music. People are missing the point if they try looking at their work from a technical perspective.
As someone who doesn't like rap whenever i hear about Tupacs legend it reminds to Cobain who I'm a huge fan of.

Beatifully put.

It's funny how I'm literally the exact opposite.

Biggie is somebody that I've just never 'got'. The lyrics, the flow...I just find everything that I've heard of his boring. Normally even rappers that I don't like I can at least see why they have such success (Jay Z for example), but Biggie's always been a mystery to me. Not that I'm saying others shouldn't like it of course, but I just struggle to see it myself.

Whereas I love Pac, probably my personal favourite. I do tend to enjoy music which tells a story or has meaning, and that's something that he obviously did do very well. And I definitely enjoy his flow as well as the lyrics he uses.

I agree with this too and why I had a bit more enjoyment for Biggies music than Pacs.

I feel like some people care for the lyrics more than the flow or rhythm of a song whilst the others like me or you are opposite.

Anyway, still 2 packs Dear Mama is a beautiful song to me.

I play it to my mum even though she is non chalont about it

I was a massive Tupac fan as a kid. His songs told fantastic stories. Dunno if he was tje best technically, but I still listen to some of hks tracks often. Weird how even a middle class dad from The Netherlands can sort of connect with it.

A song that's not from Pac, but gives me huge Pac vibes from A$AP Ferg. Not sure how you can call his music dated when you see just how great his style is even in this era. You've got guys like Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak who are practically living in the 70's and 80's with their music, who's to say what is dated.

Nail on head. He was talented as feck but somehow it's become the popular opinion amongst hip hop nerds that he wasn't very good.

I actually find Biggie to be overrated as an artist. Brilliant MC but I found Ready to die to be a bit boring and LAD had some great songs but too many fillers. I guess we never saw Biggie at his peak musically.
Yeah it does seem to be an opinion that has developed amongst so called purists over time. As for BIG I think you are right that we never actually saw the best of him, he was only 2 albums in and about to reach his peak. Still an incredible rapper imo.

One of my favourite Pac videos

None of this albums every 5 years.

I like 2Pacs lyrics and Biggie’s flow. Pacs lyrics were so Damn good though. Eminem is the GOAT for me.

Just a quick glance shows how many people haven’t actually listened to Eminem in the last four years or so. You’re missing out! But it’s a pretty lazy criticism that people fall back on so I doubt people are gonna change their minds

Not done discussing him, some people were calling him overrated in the Kendrick Lamar thread and thought we can move things to here. Also a good chance to re-share some classics.

To me he's the greatest to have ever done it. If there are any LA residents, I'd highly recommend going to his museum exhibit (Wake me when I'm free).

You can like someone and still think they are overrated which is how I view Pac.

I love his early stuff not at all fussed on the death row era and have no problem with people talking about his legacy.

I just don't have him in my top five and I only find him overrated as there is are a lot of people who like yourself think he is number one without any doubt at all.

I personally think the likes of Nas and Kendrick are far better rappers both in flow and lyrics.

I even put Jay in front of him though I find him to commercial I can't deny his skills though.

It's all opinions though I'm not hating on him

I love Tupac but my only criticism is that he put out a lot of albums in a short career and as a result he has a lot of dull songs. He has as many ‘bangers’ as any of the other greats but I can’t stick on any random Tupac album and enjoy it like I can with say Outkast.

that’s not surprising. the song “changes” was about the dutch moving from a reliance on windmills to grind their flour to heavily mechanised factories, alienating farmers and destroying settlements that had grown around the ‘mills.

putting aside his music catalogue for a moment..

he's definitely the sexiest rap artist of all time isn't he?

I mean I'm not into guys or anything but I wouldn't hesitate for a second

unfortunately he put a stop to that kind of thing during ambitionz az a ridah. he goes to great lengths to tell us “i will deny you, i’m straight, tarrou, you ain’t ever gonna feck me.”

True, our windmills are now just props for Japanese tourists to take selfies with.

Lovely thread, few rappers can make you fill what they are felling. But Kendrick has become PAC, I as PAC fan think he has become better

I’ve listened to pretty much everything he’s made (even the pre-Aftermath stuff) and IMO he hasn’t made a good album since The Eminem Show in 2002. He’s been in massive decline ever since the 8 mile soundtrack.

His peak was phenomenal but he’s put out so much bad music since then.

After Encore came out, someone really should’ve given him a big ol’ bag of weed and got him back in the studio with Dre.

No doubt, guy was just naturally so handsome.

See no changes
Wake up in the morning and I theorise
Is wind power the future or should we industrialise

The greatest for me.

His lyrical ability is underrated, he’s not Biggie, Big Pun, etc but he was no slouch. But also sometimes it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it and for him, punchlines and metaphors weren’t needed to make a hot line.

It's an insult to actual rappers like Rakim, Nas, Biggie, Kool Keith to call Tupac the rap goat.

I get that people like his music. My (white) mom does too.

Lyrical ability doesn’t mean you’re a better rapper. Otherwise Canibus and Chino XL should be on Mount Rushmore

Not inside he wasn't

It's one half of rhythm and poetry. Snoop has a great flow and zero lyrical ability. Shouldn't you have both to be in the goat conversation?

He was better before he adopted the gangster persona.

Bit of an odd dig to make, considering every rapper mentioned in this thread or the Kendrick one almost certainly has at least one white poster singing their praises

Not for me. Song content, mass appeal, voice, flow are also very important. Tupac had lyrical ability, he wasn’t a slouch on the mic, you don’t need punchlines or metaphors to be considered an ‘actual rapper’.

If we look at say Royce da 5’9, technically brilliant rapper who has better flow and lyrical ability than a lot of rappers. Where do we rank him? Higher than Tupac despite his limited appeal and lack of song content?

Tupac wasn’t Vanilla Ice. He was an ‘actual rapper’.

It's actually the white fans that turn these guys into international superstars, so yeah really odd thing to say (if meant as a dig).
