Trump/Russia/SDNY investigation

Without leakers this administration would have buried this investigation and Kremlin Mike would still be National Security Adviser.

Indeed. This is the patriotism Trump ridiculously commends Nunes for.

It’s the safest option for him I think.

  • No allegations of political influence.
  • No upset GOP politicians pulling the plug on him.
  • A probable blue house likely to take his last 18 months worth of work seriously.

Depending on what Mueller puts out, I'm sure Trump wouldn't mind impeachment in the house, no impeachment in the Senate, and a fresh start without Mueller snooping around. Unless of course Mueller comes out with something that says Trump colluded or obstructed, in which case the Senate would have to take a strong look at that.

"Strong look"... It would be Budweiser Brett all over again.

It would depend on what Mueller puts out. If he reports that Trump obstructed justice then that's a crime and would need to be deal with through impeachment.
They just bumped a lying sex offender to the supreme court. Do you really think they will find even a grain of decency and vote to impeach? No matter what Mueller says they won't do it. Graham will scream a lot. Flake will look miserable. And that would be it.

The two scenarios aren't remotely related other than by those who are fatalistically depressed about the rule of law. Kavanaugh never went through an 18 month investigation with the full power of the FBI and SDNY behind it. He was simply railroaded by a last gasp attempt to prevent him from getting approved. Also, Flake will be long gone by the time the report comes out.

The relation is that the same people will make the decision. Two decent ones couldn't be found. Good luck finding eighteen.

If Mueller comes out with clear evidence for actual, genuine collusion between Trump and the Russians, the GOP will not stay united in support. Some will, of course. Even at the worst of Watergate, Nixon had a certain support floor, both publicly and in the party. But as much as the base will support Trump through anything, most people aren't part of the Trump base. So the GOP senators will start doing the mathematics, and some will arrive at the conclusion that if they don't impeach Trump the GOP might not win another election for a decade. Or a generation.

And that's just taking the mathematics into account. Some might even have some semblance of a moral compass left in them.

18 could be found today if Trump tried to fire Mueller, including his buddy Lindsey Graham. Everyone has their red line.

I genuinely do not believe that anymore. Firing Mueller is a last resort because people like Graham will have explained the political fallout to Trump and co.

Despite that, they would still find a way to weather the storm, “make no hasty actions” and essentially let it just blow over no matter how long it took because quite frankly, it would be less damaging to them than deal with Trump via due process.

In fact, I think they would do better out of it politically if they double down and discredit everything that comes out than admit guilt, admit defeat and disappoint their base who don’t give two shits about reality.

That may be the case. We just have to wait and see how damning Mueller's final report is. It could literally range from being a nothing burger to full on conspiracy (collusion) and obstruction of justice. How damning the final report is would obviously influence the GOP's calculus, since not taking any action would only affect their chances in 2020.

Which cnut invented 'nothing-burger'? It's so annoying. In 'n' Out is a shite burger, but there's still something there. Who would even eat a burger of nothing?

Its apparently been around since the 50s.....roughly around the time when something burgers became popular.

Here's a guess for you. The report will come out showing lots of highly questionable ties between Trump's campaign and Russia, but no single item of clear proof of direct collusion from Trump himself. The report will also include lots of evidence of decades of deeply corrupt financial dealings. The report will also show that Trump obstructed justice.

And the Republican base won't care. And their senators sure as hell won't vote for impeachment over highly complicated evidence that they know 95% of their base won't even understand. And the obstruction will be brushed off as just some political thing that they claim was defending themselves against their evil Dem enemies.

Sounds the most likely outcome.

Yep. It's obvious that will happen in light of how things have gone to date. Would be nice if they surprised us... More likely to surprise us in a bad way tho.

Unless something dramatic happens right before the midterms and the dems take both houses. Like the Mueller report getting leaked.

Aside from not interfering with the elections that suggests to me that a) they're expecting at least a blue house and b) he's got something that needs action but not something so explosive that even Republicans couldn't ignore it.

Or a firing of Sessions where Mueller may wind up vulnerable of being neutered or fired, which would incentivize him to deliver his report sooner rather than wait for Sessions’ replacement possibly not allowing him to put it out at all.

Unsure what to think to be honest. Given that Mueller's office "declined to comment" it doesn't seem like this info's coming from the investigation itself. Also note how it's written: Mueller is "expected to find" - expected by whom and for what reason? We know Trump is leaning heavily on Sessions, that Rosenstein's been catching a load of heat and that Giuliani's been "expecting" Mueller to wrap up every month since April. The opening paragraph also points out that this means Mueller himself is enduring pressure to produce. It's not beyond the realm of reason to just read this as further pressure from above rather than any actual inside track on what Mueller is actually thinking. Rather than containing any actual meat the rest of the article reads as an argument from circumstance as to why these two officials' assertions might be somewhat plausible so it's also not beyond comprehension that these official's are using the same reasoning to arrive at their conclusions: That circumstances indicate Mueller will likely say something substantial after the election.

Notice how Rudy G has gone quiet lately? I think after his incoherent meltdowns and nonsensic rants where he often implicated Trump in wrongdoings, he might have been advised that he was hindering rather than helping and maybe he should just STFU.
