You reckon? The shooting scene made zero sense. Hank says he's not a killer and moments later walks into another cop's home and almost commits a double homicide without blinking an eye
Not to mention Navarro sticking a Klinex spray bottle to Peter telling him to "clean up good". Oh dear this show
You lot are hard to please. That was a pretty damn good episode. Just because it isn't as good as series 1 doesn't make it terrible. It could turn to dog shit with a terrible ending but not half bad so far as long as you are enjoying it enough to suspend your disbelief, just as you have to for loads of good shows.
The music (titles apart) was much better this episode. I'd say the dark cover of Save Tonight wasn't an accident and the lyrics will point to some event in the next episode. Probably not good for a main character.
They established that he is a big loser who has nothing going on for himself so I can see why he'd be tempted. Also I wouldn't say he did it "without blinking an eye", he was botching the whole thing quite badly.
Finally finished S3 yesterday. Think it‘s been pretty great, works nicely with S1 imho, being to some extent quite samey (in a good way) yet still telling a very different story.
Paused S4 after the third episode. Let‘s see if it can beat S2 at least.

Felt much more understated and not as in-your-face this week. I'm enjoying the score much more but it's been underutilised. Good catch on the lyrics.
The finale is clocking in at 80 minutes.

As @Wibble said, a lot will depend on the ending. Lots to tie up, including how the Yellow King symbol fits into all of this.

I generally agree with your assessment - especially about the characters. For what it's worth, the plot picks up a bit in episodes 4 and 5. Episode 3 was definitely the worst of the season so far.

It’s ok. None of the characters are particularly compelling, the story has bordered on sci-fi at times, and there’s a bit of a wokeness to the whole thing. There’s a lot of wrap up to go in the final episode and I feel like it’s going to be an underwhelming conclusion.
The main intrigue for the season was what happened to the scientists at the facility, but it feels like they’ve sidelined and downplayed that quite a bit since the first episode.

Watched the last two episodes which were good imho. It‘s all still laid on very thick and heavy but the pacing was better.
Also made out an intriguing connection: just noticed, ep.5 ~21min mark, that the „Silver Sky“ mining company uses a logo that looks like a predecessor of the logo The Empire will use, far, far into the future ..and when Danvers enters the building they even have a death star like lamp standing on the front desk. Not that one didn‘t suspect them being the baddies already before.

Foster seems to be chanelling that contempt into her performance.
The finale is going be a disaster. I can't even imagine a satisfying ending. Maybe if they'd say feck it and do some shark tornado explosion then it might be at least memorable some way

Rustin Cohle will rock up and put one right between the eyes of our villain, then he'll look to his right and see his dad doing that weird ice dance. Then he'll start dancing too. Then everyone starts dancing to a choreographed number with jazz hands and a bit of tap. Then Jodie foster wakes up and it's the night before the sun stops coming up. None of it happened.
Then Vince Vaughan does a piece to camera breaking the 4th wall.

I don't think this show was that 'woke' at all. They've just not done a good job of keeping it, well, interesting.
It was ridiculous. Only way I could somehow twist it in my mind to make „sense“ was that I thought he‘d committ suicide next to his funny bunny in the bed after his false fiancé didn‘t show up (plot twist: she was coming with the next plane) so didn‘t care about anything anymore. Still doesn‘t make much sense though.

I feel like I deserve a prize for making it to the end of the season.
Not a terrible ending, but failing to really address the meaning of the symbol and any connection to season 1 made it just ok rather than a satisfying closure.

That's a pretty disingenuous take of a review that was clearly of the opening episode.
It's fine for someone to have not enjoyed something previously because of its 'Acting-with-a-capital-A and Directing-with-a-capital-D' style. It's also fine for someone to not be into overwhelmingly male-dominated stories.
It's just their opinion, which isn't wrong, it's just not the same as yours - and in this case mine too.
But it shouldn't haunt you for weeks.

Who's "haunted"? I just found it funny that the review was so obviously coloured more by politics than by the quality or otherwise of the show. Just as I would have done if the Mail or Express had given it 1/5 and called it the worst shit ever for the same reasons.
Like most people in here, I thought True Detective starring Jodie Foster sounded fantastic and I was hoping that review was right, but the comments from actual people having seen the show have put it quite far down my to-watch list.
