Television True Detective: Night Country | Season 4 | FINALE SPOILERS

I watched five episodes in a row today, I think it's fantastic so far.
Reported.

Good ending. Not sure about the rest of it.
You reckon? The shooting scene made zero sense. Hank says he's not a killer and moments later walks into another cop's home and almost commits a double homicide without blinking an eye
Not to mention Navarro sticking a Klinex spray bottle to Peter telling him to "clean up good". Oh dear this show

You lot are hard to please. That was a pretty damn good episode. Just because it isn't as good as series 1 doesn't make it terrible. It could turn to dog shit with a terrible ending but not half bad so far as long as you are enjoying it enough to suspend your disbelief, just as you have to for loads of good shows.

A kinda okay-ish episode, I guess? Not sure how I feel about the ending. Jodie Foster was the best thing about it, as usual.

Looks like the finale is going to mirror the first season's. It'll be interesting to see how they close everything out; an extended runtime seems like a given.

Interesting credits song choice, too, in the form of a Generic Movie Trailer Save Tonight cover:

The music (titles apart) was much better this episode. I'd say the dark cover of Save Tonight wasn't an accident and the lyrics will point to some event in the next episode. Probably not good for a main character.

They established that he is a big loser who has nothing going on for himself so I can see why he'd be tempted. Also I wouldn't say he did it "without blinking an eye", he was botching the whole thing quite badly.

Finally finished S3 yesterday. Think it‘s been pretty great, works nicely with S1 imho, being to some extent quite samey (in a good way) yet still telling a very different story.

Paused S4 after the third episode. Let‘s see if it can beat S2 at least.

Felt much more understated and not as in-your-face this week. I'm enjoying the score much more but it's been underutilised. Good catch on the lyrics.

‘True Detective: Night Country’ Edges Season 1 To Become Series’ Most Watched Installment

Four episodes into its six-episode run, True Detective: Night Country has become the most watched season of the crime anthology series with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, surpassing the 11.9 million viewer average for the original True Detective installment.

A lot has changed since True Detective starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson ran in 2014, breaking records as the most watched freshman season of an HBO series since Six Feet Under.
The finale is clocking in at 80 minutes.

Season 1 - Incredible. 10/10.
Season 2 - Didn't watch.
Season 3 - Pretty good. 7/10.

Just finished Ep 3 of S4. This is a baaaad TV show. Feck me.

Nothing has happened. None of the characters have any redeemable qualities. Danvers is unbearable and the woman playing Navarro can't act.

I'll persist because I've committed now but for the love of God how did this season reach the point of being allowed to exist.

I generally agree with your assessment - especially about the characters. For what it's worth, the plot picks up a bit in episodes 4 and 5. Episode 3 was definitely the worst of the season so far.

There is a lot to wrap up. All the Tuttle stuff, a play on season 1 or a genuine connection?

They love their characters to be all damaged, but it’s hard to feel for any of them as well.

Dont know will the finale bring closure to anything, or will just Danvers and Navarro just find their peace and never return - like when Colin Farrells character couldn’t send a text before his death - a nothing ending for the character/paying for their past

I’ve liked it though, it’s just a tough series as it’s always going to be a loss when you compare to season 1 - maybe that’s why they are trying to connect it and close something off from season 1 too?

It’s ok. None of the characters are particularly compelling, the story has bordered on sci-fi at times, and there’s a bit of a wokeness to the whole thing. There’s a lot of wrap up to go in the final episode and I feel like it’s going to be an underwhelming conclusion.

The main intrigue for the season was what happened to the scientists at the facility, but it feels like they’ve sidelined and downplayed that quite a bit since the first episode.

Watched the last two episodes which were good imho. It‘s all still laid on very thick and heavy but the pacing was better.

Also made out an intriguing connection: just noticed, ep.5 ~21min mark, that the „Silver Sky“ mining company uses a logo that looks like a predecessor of the logo The Empire will use, far, far into the future ..and when Danvers enters the building they even have a death star like lamp standing on the front desk. Not that one didn‘t suspect them being the baddies already before.

The finale is going be a disaster. I can't even imagine a satisfying ending. Maybe if they'd say feck it and do some shark tornado explosion then it might be at least memorable some way

Hmm..they still got that one eyed icebear potential!

Rustin Cohle will rock up and put one right between the eyes of our villain, then he'll look to his right and see his dad doing that weird ice dance. Then he'll start dancing too. Then everyone starts dancing to a choreographed number with jazz hands and a bit of tap. Then Jodie foster wakes up and it's the night before the sun stops coming up. None of it happened.

Then Vince Vaughan does a piece to camera breaking the 4th wall.

"Had you going there didn't we? You're probably thinking to yourself what a waste of 6 hours. Pretty cool when Rust showed up though, right? Did we really need to see Christopher Ecclestone's buttcheeks? Probably not. It is what it is. Dorothy Mantooth is a saint."

Seems like a lot of you wanted to not like this. I think you'll get the ending you want.

Woke? Is it? Jesus, so precious.

Can we also appreciate how ridiculous it is for the big bad mining boss to dangle the carrot of a very minor promotion for the deputy, and that’s all he needed as motivation to execute a drug addict in front of his boss and then force his own son to execute him.
Yeah that seemed completely insane to me.

I don't think this show was that 'woke' at all. They've just not done a good job of keeping it, well, interesting.

It was ridiculous. Only way I could somehow twist it in my mind to make „sense“ was that I thought he‘d committ suicide next to his funny bunny in the bed after his false fiancé didn‘t show up (plot twist: she was coming with the next plane) so didn‘t care about anything anymore. Still doesn‘t make much sense though.

Had a free morning so I decided to watch the finale.

it’s bad. Like, really bad. Maybe worse than season two bad.

can’t believe they used the “time is a flat circle” line

I feel like I deserve a prize for making it to the end of the season.

Not a terrible ending, but failing to really address the meaning of the symbol and any connection to season 1 made it just ok rather than a satisfying closure.

fecked up finale to a dumbass season :wenger: What a waste of time this has been

It's worse than season 2, clearly the weakest season

So you're telling me that the Guardian were fibbing when they said that this is better than season one because it's got fewer men and more women and inuits and that? :(

The intro, like the music and visuals and camerawork and stuff, is so cool that every time it nearly convinces me I'm about to see a decent episode of television.

That's a pretty disingenuous take of a review that was clearly of the opening episode.

It's fine for someone to have not enjoyed something previously because of its 'Acting-with-a-capital-A and Directing-with-a-capital-D' style. It's also fine for someone to not be into overwhelmingly male-dominated stories.

It's just their opinion, which isn't wrong, it's just not the same as yours - and in this case mine too.

But it shouldn't haunt you for weeks.

It got good reviews for ticking boxes no doubt, not because the critics actually watched the show.

Aye yai yai.

Who's "haunted"? I just found it funny that the review was so obviously coloured more by politics than by the quality or otherwise of the show. Just as I would have done if the Mail or Express had given it 1/5 and called it the worst shit ever for the same reasons.

Like most people in here, I thought True Detective starring Jodie Foster sounded fantastic and I was hoping that review was right, but the comments from actual people having seen the show have put it quite far down my to-watch list.

Very girl power. Bad, bad men.

Ultimately it played out like a knockoff Tarantino film.
