Trent Alexander Arnold

Have preferred Reece James as England's RB since towards the end of last season to be honest. Very good crosser in his own right, technically good on the ball, quick but physically stronger, more disciplined in his passing and defensively much more solid.

That stay just tells me how important he is to Liverpool. 38 just wow.

Yeah, he did well. Makes me wonder what they count as giving it away. Are they counting say, headed clearances, crosses etc? To me giving it away would be just a sloppy pass and to do that 38 times seems ridiculous.

I'd imagine it includes everything including crosses, being dispossessed etc.

According to Squawka his average passes attempted per 90 in the PL this season is 72.8 - in 77 minutes of action I can't imagine he attempted more passes than that in his game. If all 38 were misplaced passes that would put him at an extremely low completion rate (like in the 40's max) which seems very unlikely.

Absolutely, but he’s been poor for a while now, right?
Yeah he has, his attacking game has gone off a cliff.

Lack of preseason and having covid in that period hasn’t helped his case at all either. We’re far too reliant on him though, we need to change up our game instead of expecting our full backs to produce constantly.

Could have played for Moyes in the infamous "cross-gate" game.

According to this (which I think is still based on Okta data), his passing accuracy was 61%. Salah's was just as bad, but he obviously played in tighter situations. Milner's was even worse, but he played under more urgent conditions with not much time. Robertson had a few more passes, a lot more crosses, and his passing was at 83%. TAA's average is around 80% too so a definite off-day but the stat probably exaggerates things with clearances, crosses etc. as you say.

He's just not a defender. Going forward he's clearly good but he's a bit of a one trick pony in that regard too. He'll improve though, he's still very young.

Jose worked out he was the weak link defensively two years ago

Delivers a fantastic cross and has a ridiculous range of passing for a full back but certainly at Anfield I would be asking Marcus Rashford to “cheat” and stay high and wide. Force TAA to do the things he doesn’t like doing.

It looks bad, and what we fundamentally know about football is that giving the ball away is a bad thing. It's even marked as a negative in Opta stats.

However, him giving the ball away from a cross is part of Liverpool's gameplan. Get the ball into an area where the defence have to (and will) win a header, then with the front press, win the second ball or put them under pressure to give the ball away in a much more dangerous position than the half way line.

The issue for Liverpool really is the front three look about as toothless as it gets at the moment and aren't doing enough. Trent will continue to cross and lose the ball regardless, that's how they play, they rarely score headers from crosses.

As much as some Liverpool fans might have claimed otherwise after an utterly fantastic season past year, greatness is maintaing high standards season after season after season. Carragher putting Mane into a combined team over Giggs is fine when you compare a season to a season, but ultimately that doesn't make you great.

Trent is a fantastic talent but he's got a lot to do yet.

Carragher is a tit. I doubt even Mane thinks he’s better than Giggs.

Still young. Still very good player looking at his qualities.

But he has had a brutal season. When he doesn't produce in attack, his flaws are more put in the light when you looking at all those defeding aspects.

Robertson screams longevity to me much more than TAA.

Age is on his side and he's a much more complete full back than TAA is. Robertson is also one of the most consistent players in the world, his reliability and consistency over the past 3 years is nothing short of incredible.

Can't be true, @harms told me he's better than Phil Neil and Gary Neville.

This is why we wait a few years before comparing players to ones who dominated for a decade.
I said that his peak was better than Neville's and Neil's, which is still true. His career isn't at this point, but it's very likely going to end up better than those of Neville and Neil.

Also, neither Neville nor Neil dominated for a decade (they hardly dominated even for a season; their teams did).

Remember last year when the media debate was about him being better than Beckham? :wenger:

He’s actually poor in defence and going forward is overrated. He’s still obviously a good player but the comparisons to Beckham last year were completely laughable. Not in that league.

He's a fantastic player, probably believed the hype a bit too much himself and is now having a very poor season.

I have no doubt he will turn it around though, just needs a bit of a reality check and maybe some proper competition.

I genuinely think he would be a better right sided CM anyway rather than a RB.

Because he decided to base if off one particular season, he'd have his argument.

I heard plenty of Liverpool fans say last year was better than any Fergie team because of the points. They love their mitigating circumstances.

Greatness is defined over time.

He is my current 'favourite' Liverpool player (if I can call it that) but my god giving the ball away 38 times is worthy of a hanging.

It seems sides have worked him out. He can cross a ball and switch the play really well but i noticed Southampton etc tuck in the other side when their FB is crossing the ball so the space is on the outside where they cant hurt them. Forces Salah and Mane further away from goal as well since theyre the 2 picking the ball up.
It was really obvious yesterday with the amount of time Mane had the ball running into the box from an inside position. As soon as he reaches the box they were on him.

And "peak" Yorke was better than Ian Rush. Plenty of players have peaked for a short spell, it doesn't make them greats.

Greatest, and we were talking about all time greatest back fours, is defined over time, not a blink of on eye in football terms.

He has been great for a couple of seasons already, performing at the level neither Neville nor Neal were ever close to. Right now you took one game and decided to write him off — surely it goes against your considerate approach that only takes long spells as a standard to judge players on?

......bashing him as a inept defender. The irony when we have a great defender in AWB.

When he is on song, even our fans worship him over AWB.

Bambi on ice, we need some attacking RB!

He was probably the best right-back in the world over the previous two seasons. He was never defensively great, if I was a Liverpool fan I would be more concerned with his contribution going forward right now.

you are comparing apples and oranges. Neville and TAA are completely different players. Neville was far more of a compete player than TAA, who is great going forward, but can’t defend - which is a reason he’s not first choice for England.

personally I’d choose Neville every day of the week as a full back.

Damn right.

Neville was the hardest worker on the pitch, had a good engine, great cross on him (underrated aspect of his game), great understanding with the winger ahead of him, and could defend!

As Liverpool have reached 2 Champions League finals with him as RB and Liverpool's attacks (which they've been so good at over the last 3 years) largely revolving around him and Robertson, he clearly is a RB. Over the last 3 season's he's revolutionising the RB role in the same way Roberto Carlos did at LB (and he had his critics), maybe the problem is he's just come back from injury? But TAA is brill, my favioute English player at the moment and a genuine world class talent.

Form has literally nose dived, let's see if he can come back, without his attacking contributions he doesn't really have much else to offer and I wonder how much his attacking contributions were down to Klopp's system when it was working.
