Trent Alexander Arnold | Real Madrid working on deal (Ornstein)

I remember when Madrid were taking our best players. Liverpool are a top top club and this is an indication of that.

Was always the most likely one of the big three to be gone so not really surprised about this, although I do think he has handled it quite poorly re: not wanting things to play out in public but then doing nothing to prevent exactly that from happening.

Not putting much value into some things he said back in 2018 when he was barely a first-team regular and hadn't won anything yet at the club, things have changed dramatically since then and you can't fault him for wanting to join the biggest club in the world rather than play at Liverpool for 10 more years and the only thing that's left for him is going from club legend to one of the club's biggest legends.

Genuinely curious to see how he'll do at Madrid by the way, their set-up likely won't be specifically catered towards allowing him to roam around freely so eager to find out how he'll hold up if defense becomes his number one priority.

Is he considered a club legend?

Antony is ripping it up out there, so I really doubt Trent is going to be 'found out'. He'll be just fine.
If anything. Playing at RM he’ll be stat padding playing in a less competitive league

And we’ll continue to hear how the sun shines out his arse every time he rocks up at Wembley.

No idea what the general consensus is but he definitely is one for me. Howegrown, local player who has played for the club almost 10 years and was an integral part of a successful period at the club. Basically won every major trophy there is for us.

On the upside, he'll get shredded by Yamal and Williams a few times per year

He's a fantastic player so not surprised by this in the slightest. Liverpool looking at a pretty big rebuild over the next couple of seasons.

If they sign him expecting a good defender then they are idiots. Hes a passable defender. You sign him for his ability going forwards.

Yeah, he will be fine. He won't have to defend that much because its RM.

Remember that time Liverpool fans were claiming that "Agent Trent" was convincing Bellingham to sign for Liverpool?

Aged well!

Surely he is a club legend by any metric?

Hes been with them for a long time (I do not know if he is a youth player or not), he’s been a good player and has been integral in a CL win and winning their first league title in 30 odd years.

I don’t see how he could not be a club legend?

Most will probably disagree but I'm happy to see him leave. He's not a good defender but he's world class on the ball. Passes/crosses/set pieces etc. I thought Liverpool hugely missed him in the cup final.

At Madrid, I think he'll be good. There'll be games where he'll struggle against tricky wingers. But they have a lot of the ball and he could be a very useful signing.

Real Madrid are working to close a deal to sign Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold as a free agent in the summer.

The La Liga side have been monitoring Alexander-Arnold for two years and doing everything in their power since January to convince him to join at the end of this season. They will have to inform their Premier League counterparts if and when a deal is signed, which has not happened yet.

Alexander Arnold’s Liverpool contract is scheduled to expire in June and he has been permitted sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club since the start of 2025.

The Athletic reported in October that Madrid had made the 26-year-old a priority target before they saw an approach to sign him in January knocked back.

In fairness, they don't have to play him in those games if hes out of form, and against most teams he's an overwhelming net benefit. Especially so in a less transitional league
And Yamal mostly plays on the right if I'm not mistaken, and Williams might even be off in the summer.

How has he handled it poorly? Hes just decided not to talk about it. This is one of the damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t scenarios.

True, but the point stands that if his defensive form drops or you expect a threat on that side greater than the benefits of his accurate long passing and crossing, then you don't need to play him.

Just my opinion of course - but he has probably known for about a year now that he wants to join Madrid. Could've just announced a few months ago that he's leaving for them and this is his final season for us, hoping to win the league, and the fans have clarity and could give him a proper farewell, no bullshitting around or anything. I don't see the point in staying quiet about it if literally everyone knows about it by now.

And going one step further, he could've renewed his contract last summer with a gentleman's agreement to let him leave for Madrid in 2025, earning us some extra money in the process. That might be expecting too much from an ordinary footballer but if I'm not mistaken even the likes of Mac Allister have done such things at Brighton where he didn't even really have ties to the club, so TAA could easily have done something alike. Not holding that against him or anything like that but now there are certain things that a significant portion of our fanbase will hold against him once he's gone, that could've been avoided if he had done those things differently.

can’t think of a better player to support him defensively than Valverde on their right

Yeah he's struck gold assuming he does go - not only getting to play for Madrid but in a perfect setup with one of the best midfielders in the world able to cover his ass defensively every week.

I am not saying you're wrong or Liverpool fans shouldn't be upset. I am just saying there is no ideal way for Trent to leave Liverpool. No matter how he leaves, Liverpool fans will be upset, simply because he's going to spend a huge chunk of his best years elsewhere. There's no way to dress it up. As a player, you just move.

That's an exaggeration for Madrid in La Liga, it'll mainly be in the CL imo and the odd Classico here and there.
