Without doubt, I'm very pleased with the club's work in the transfer window to date. In Memphis Depay, we've added one of the brightest young talents in world football. He should add pace, creativity, goals, assists, and a bit of arrogance. In Matteo Darmian, although I've only seen him play a few times, we've addressed a right back position which has been lacking for a good few seasons now. He's reputed to be solid defensively, hard working, and versatile. In Bastian Schweinsteiger, we've added an experienced world class talent who will bring steel, leadership and class to the midfield. Finally, in Morgan Schneiderlin, we've added one of the best performing midfielders in England over the past couple of years, and the perfect replacement for Michael Carrick. At long last, we should have a balanced midfield, on par with ant team in the league (if not Europe). Honestly, what's not to like?
As far as the departures go, I have absolutely no complaints. Nani's time was clearly up, and his sale was no surprise. RVP's sale was somewhat surprising, but I think it was the right move. Despite his brilliant performance in his first season, there's no denying he's no longer the same player. Given his wages, it' was time to move him on. In fact, I give the club great credit for doing so. Teams get into trouble by being overly loyal to older players who are under performing relative to their contracts. You can't fall in love with your players. A certain degree of ruthlessness is required. LVG clearly demonstrated that he's willing to put personal feelings aside and make tough decisions for the good of the team.
Of course, the work isn't done. LVG's rebuilding of the squad is ongoing. There will be 2 or 3 more arrivals, and a few departures. An experienced centre back is a must, as is a striker. I'm convinced De Gea will be sold, and so a goalkeeper will also be needed.
So far, a great summer for the supporters!
