@footballmcd: The very reliable De Telegraaf believe that LVG will spend close to £73m on a new attacking player before the window shuts #mufc

De Telegraaf is a tough one. They are a national newspaper compareable to the Daily Mail imo, the difference is that they do have some sources. They never state them so it's difficult to tell their real stories from the crap ones, the article which the tweet is talking about mentions: 'Nobody believes Manchester United will start the season with only Fellaini and Rooney as strikers. They will sign a star attacker and have 100m Euro to do so' - written by de Telegraafsportauthors. Hardly any credibility but I do agree with them in that I think we will make a signing like that so they could be right on this one.

The Telegraaf has also linked us to the likes of Gaitan, Vlaar and other non-believeable targets so they're not super in-the knowledge about Manchester United and we'll have to wait and see on this one.
inb4 we spend £73m on Gaitan.

now espn are saying united will hijack the stones deal.

Jesus these agents are using our name to get ahead like a cheap hooker who has just slept with a celebrity.:lol:

The article needs a whole paragraph to justify calling the Telegraaf reliable. It's the Dutch version of The Daily Star

Again, though, they called us signing three players imminently that weekend before flying out to the US (Darmian, Schweinsteiger and Morgan). That's exactly what happened. Maybe it was luck, but no one else called it.....

No quotes but they do say we are 'set' for a big signing and it 'will' be an attacker. It's their opinion that they can't see it not happening but they seem fairly confident that it's "set to happen".

SportWitness are quite critical of transfer rumours so they'd be dismissing it if they felt it was clickbait.

It's just so random plucking out a figure of £73million, but not having any idea who the player is, only that it's an attacking player. They tend to be reasonably reliable, but the obscurity of it all just seems unusual. Who out there could cost that amount realistically?

KDB? Bale? Griezzman?

Seems bollocks to me, why wouldn't they know who it is...

Griezmann has a release clause of roughly 80 million euros afaik. KDB wouldn't cost 100 million euros either. Bale would be the only one fitting the bill if we are looking at one player alone.

They say €100m in the article itself. £73m is just the conversion to gbp

They didn't mention Schweinstieger, Schneiderlin and Darmian either when they reported of our imminent signing of 3 players.

Fair enough and I hope they are right.

Having read the article though, it doesn't say we are set to buy a big name. Just that there is money to spend but time is running out. It's an opinion piece.

Actually, translating the article itself, De Telegraaf aren't saying we're set to pay 100m on a striker. They simply say we have the money available and it should be for an attacker:

It will be interesting to see how Manchester United on the last day of the transfer market is stirring. Nobody believes the club season starts with only Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini as spiers, when Bruges tonight in the ticket for the Champions League is inside.

There is still 100 million ready for a stunt purchase. That should be an attacker. But time is running out. Van Gaal: "Right now the game against Club Bruges, the most important thing we want to be the first year back Europe we have still not done and if the Belgian fans are just as fanatical as being at Old Trafford... it is still a tough night. "

Van Gaal went this summer among others Memphis Depay and Bastian Schweinsteiger, while among more left Robin van Persie and Angel di Maria. The number of players where United note was associated is infinite. Among them Pedro (now from Barcelona to Chelsea), Thomas Müller (Bayern Munich) and Karim Benzema (Real Madrid).

yeah it sounds more like an opinion piece than a sourced article. Plenty in the British media have been suggesting the same that we cannot start the season with Rooney and Chico alone.

It is bollocks obviously, the only 2 in that price range are Bale and Müller, neither will end up here this summer

Or it could be a £40 million pound player, who we spend £73 million on. A desperate over price job, like Di Maria last year.

Except all the players we want.
Yeah I can't really get excited about these claims now. Muller, Bale, Neymar, Griezmann etc. All great players. But for various reasons - so unrealistic, especially at this stage in the transfer window.

Question - is our lack of recent activity possibly in some way related to actually qualifying for the Champions League group stage and the proceeding commercial benefits thereafter? Something about net spend, FFP, ensuring guarantee of Champions League games and spending endorsement money.

Thats what I'm tentatively hoping, we're waiting until CL football is 100% confirmed.

I wish people would actually read it, it's a pure speculative and opinion based piece.

This is a lot more plausible than the bollocks "we'll only sign players once the adidas deal kicks off" theory. It's also possible that whichever player we want is also waiting to see if we make the group stages
