van Gaal is most likely looking at a leadership figure when making this signing. It's not all about playing ability and fitness. Just being part of the dressing room will provide a huge boost even if he can't play every game.
Can very much be like when we signed RVP. The statement of intent was clear to the fans and the rest of the team and this can do similar. He won't have that match-winning ability of course but from starting last year with Cleverley and Fletcher to this?

That's a shame, had earmarked him as a potential Fantasy Football gem :(

I definitely expect us to compete for the league now if this transfer goes through. Midfield three Carrick, Herrera, Schweinsteiger, front three Depay, Di Maria, Rooney. Easily good enough to mount a proper title challenge.

Hoorah! Another season where I just cba to learn all the Vitesse players because half of them will be gone after a year.

#ManchesterUnited After #Darmian #Schweinsteiger here too : there is an agreement with #Bayern

People saying Otamendi next. Haven't been following the news lately, is the Ramos thing dead?

Fellaini will only be getting on the bench as a final 10 minutes target man from now on.

As it should be though.

That was my thought as well. We're filling the hole of Giggs, Scholes, Rio, Vidic and Evra in the dressing room with a World Cup winner, Champions League winner, multiple Bundesliga winner and current captain of the reigning world champions as well as vice-captain of arguably the second-best club in the world.

His influence alone is worth the outlay. We have a few up-and-comers who will benefit hugely from learning from one of the most successful players in the game. He'll also add valuable experience and know-how once we get into the "squeaky bum time" end of the season. I doubt we'll see a collapse like the ones we suffered at the start of the season and after the Chelsea game next season. Judging by his post-season dinner speech, van Gaal feels like those lacklustre periods were the difference between fighting for a CL spot until the very end and winning the league. Potentially a very, very important signing.
