In that case, who would be the more preferred choice, Varane or Otamendi.....
Otamendi for now, Varane easy for the long-term.

I want to rate Varane, but his game is still so full of errors. I really don't think he's that far ahead of Jones, and I don't rate him as highly as Smalling from a defending point of view.

That's why I am pleased LaPorte signed a new contract at Bilbao. Learn your trade before a big move. Varane moved too soon and being in that spotlight isn't a great help.

Point is we made the mistake of losing him to Real when we went for Jones ahead of him. For me, Varane has a much higher ceiling than McNair who does not have Varane's calmness. McNair goes to bits as soon as he makes an error while Varane seems to have a very calm and mature head on his shoulders. If we have the chance to sign him, we should not let go of that chance just because we are worried about McNair's progress. You don't let go of the opportunity of signing such talents for someone like McNair.

What was the mistake, exactly? He had an offer from United and chose Madrid.

Varane plus any of our defenders, with no De Gea behind them. It will be laugh-a-minute for certain. And the ones laughing won't be our fans either...

I agree, the longer Laporte stays at Bilbao the better player he'll become. For me, Laporte is already ahead of Varane, it's just Varane had much more hype and looks better because he's a ridiculous athlete.

Call me cynical, but this whole Real Madrid/Otemendi story seems like a huge blag to get us to help them out with De Gea. Sort of 'We want Otamendi but if you give us De Gea we will give you a free run at him' (even though we aren't really interested).

Está previsto que hable hoy Otamendi...

Translation: Otamendi scheduled to speak today

*Might not be transfer related, mind, but i've seen some rumours on twitter suggesting it might be about United, still trying to locate the main source of these.

Varane is a strange one for me, hes still a bit naive and makes mistakes. We need experience back there to work with smalling, jones etc to help them improve.
Varane will be a decent player and hes lightning quick and strong so recovers well.

You dont rate Varane?
I do, but we need a finished product type in defense. Varane will also likely take at least a few months to settle down. At least at the start it will be a clusterfeck with no De Gea to save our arses either.

After the last 2 seasons it is evident that we need a experienced leader for our backline.
As good as Varane can be, he is not the leader Otamendi is, not to mention Otamendi is as tough as nails and well suited for the EPL.

We dont need a CB for the future, we need a CB to compliment Smalling and who can lead the backline now....Varane isnt quite there yet.

Especially if DDG goes, having a leader with experience back there is vital.

Yup, that's exactly what I'm getting at.

He's going to be a top defender IMO. He's got the whole lot. But probably not the ideal age for us at the moment.

The Italian clubs are taking this Summer by storm, they seem to really get business done quickly there this TW
It's actually a good thing given juve have been like this for awhile now, so the others catching up can be positive for the league.

So let them have him if they want, we'll keep De Gea, who they definitely want. We'll have Varane off them too, whilst we're at it. 2 can play at being shitc**ts!

If there's a chance of getting Varane now though then surely we have to take it? Otamendi might be what we need in the short term but if we think Varane could be one of the outstanding CBs of his generation and he's somehow available right now...

Yeah from what I've seen he'd be one of those "too good to not sign" talents.

Tottenham are eyeing up a move for Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah this summer. [talkSport]

Best club in the PL for him in my opinion apart from us. If this happened it might mean Lennon could come to us which i'd be happy about as i was really impressed by him when he came last season.
