Neither City or Liverpool played in a low block so your point doesn't stand up to scrutiny. As a team a low block trades goals for defence which is why we generally don't laud CBs who play for lower table defensive teams.

Even in those seasons we witnessed the same type of weaknesses in his game he was just less exposed as the setup was defensive.

Scrutiny ? He didn't make mistakes, he won duels and he played generally well. We played to his strengths I agreed - but your argument is just bizarre. He wasn't good - he just wasn't exposed because we played defensively ? That is basically like saying that a goalkeeper who didn't concede any goals was crap - he just wasn't exposed because he didn't have anything to do.

I mean, post history on this forum is available to all. My thoughts on Maguire have never wavered. Maybe what others consider "very good" is not what I consider very good?

"b-b-but how did we finish second then?" we were still shite - Maguire included - as was the rest of the league - 19 points difference between first and second placed teams.

either way, Maguire and "very good", to me, is fiction.

Maguire was very good in the Euros.....and he was generally solid in the first 2 seasons at United

I would like to see him get another chance
Yeah, I think Tuanzebe would be really well suited to ETHs system. He'd have to be competing for the same spot as both Martinez and Lindelof though in my eyes as he's not great in the air.

If Linedlof is happy to play backup then I'd be chuffed with Maguire & Bailly leaving and one decently fast, aerially strong defender with a good injury record coming in to compete with Varane.

Martinez / Tuan / Lind - Varane / New CB

Send Phil off to the glue factory.

read below:

ah ok - over long periods of time I agree with you. But I still think the criticism he gets for his first 2 year is ridiculous. He wasn't as good as I hoped and believed he would be - but he was still solid and certainly not a bad player.

Tuanzebe is a bit like Bailly - he can look excellent for 80 minutes, but you just know that a disaster-moment is waiting to happen. And with Tuanzebe they tend to be big. It's like that game against Arsenal where he generally had a superb game, before he handed Aubameyang a goal. He is a player I simply don't trust

Yeah, those sort of mistakes are tolerable when they are younger. The problem is Tuanzebe has missed 2-3 years of development at this point. He should be much further along in his career.

One thing to be slow. Another thing to be slow and offer zero aerial threat or ability and also be horrendous with decision making. At the first opportunity, Maguire needs to be sold. A terrible signing by every standard possible.

Sure, agreed. The talents there I don't think anyone would deny, he's just never kicked on due to injuries / our disastrous string on coaches / shite loan choices.

Whereas Bailly (much as I LOVE his playstyle when on form) is a lost cause mentally I think, Tuanzebe would be worth sticking with if ETH rated him in my opinion. Bit of a belief and some gametime / coaching might do the world of goof, as he's got the raw materials still I imagine.

Who knows. Interesting to see how our CB situation pans out, all looks pretty up in the air at the mo.

You’re right. Apart from being English he had a history of relegation. It’s probably the worse deal I can remember.

Weird that getting relegated doesn’t seem to tarr every player it happens to.

I don’t know why people can’t just accept that Maguire is a fairly decent centre half who we overpaid for and leave it there.

There’s some irresistible desire to one up the previous shite hot take with ever more ridiculous hyperbole. It’s just fecking nonsense.

Hes been awful. No pace, no recovery pace. No posiitonal sense. No leadership. What redeeming qualities does he have? The scouts who recommended him should have been fired.
His fist year here was really good for us. Let’s not re-write history based upon his current form.

He would be a fairly decent centre half for a mid table team. I would say that is where we are. But we aspire to more.

The fee shouldn't be a stick to beat Maguire, but a stick to beat Woodward...
Lindelof isn't the answer either, he was the reason Woodward panicked and overpaid for Maguire, wasn't he?

No way we should sell Maguire if we are not buying another defender

This is revisionary. He isn’t good enough and I guarantee you he wouldn’t be here if not English.

I can only assume you're using words you do t understand.

It isn't, at all. Go back to between the Euros and start of last season, just after he'd been in the team of the tournament.

Find me some posts saying that he's useless and needs to go. I'll wait for you to link them, thanks.

He was never 'worth' the fee but this narrative that he's awful and a waste of space is embrassingly fickle.

Stop going so over the top. It's enough to say "he's not good enough" and leave it at that. Fine.

It's stupid, low iq people who have to go hysterical and over the top, because they lack the ability to control their emotions and think critically.

Frenkie and Antony to finish off the window

Imagine the scenes on the Caf..

Frenkie would be described as a mercenary and his wife a slag who hates the Arndale Centre whilst Antony would be labelled unprofessional and concerns raised about his age because all Brazilian forwards go fat quickly.
